I built something similar many years ago when I was in high school. it took me about one hour everyday after school in the metal shop for a whole year. however this story has a sad ending. when I moved out of home I forgot to take it with me and one of my younger sisters idiot boyfriends sat on it..
Don't use 100% Distilled Water either; it attracts (is this the right Way of saying it?) Ions and thus removes the Zinc from the Boiler, turning the Brass into pure Copper. Mix distilled with Tap Water something between 60-40 to 80-20 %, depending on how hard your Tap Water is.
The steam supply. He means stop the engine running, so that there is no mixture of condensed steam and oil running out of the exhaust pipe when the tray is not there to catch and collect it.
You're right, and that's because they're toys really. Meant for boys doing their first learning about the steam engineering that was still extant in the fifties and sixties. Nowadays the population is very different, economically and culturally, and so they now fascinate, and are mostly bought and run by certain adults.

That was pretty general statement --use oil---what viscosity oil? My engines[old] spray the area with oil as they run!
I think just standard steam oil
They sell special steam oil which is 40 weight oil with some tallow in it. But you can use regular 30 or 40 weight automotive oil.
Ive seen a few of these things now and am not impressed by the machining. Run out and wobble on rotating parts.
