Wilesco D20 stream engine with M66 dynamo

- This video shows my Wilesco D20 stationary steam engine.
It has been modified with a rerouted exhaust, ethanol burner. The M66 dynamo has been installed pulled by a 38mm pulley. The dynamo powers 4 white LEDs in a lantern.
I know there are more efficient ways to power 4 LEDs but this involves fire, smoke and oil so the fun-factor makes up for it.
With this video I tried to capture all the steps I take to run the engine and to clear the boiler from water afterwards.

That looks good! I wish I had something like this, and I wonder if we can put wooden planks on the burner slip and use that as some fuel too? Let me know if U have something U want to tell me.

Would bicycle be run by this method with fitting extra trolley back side.
Do you need the oil that comes with it, or can you use something like gun oil.
***** the oil that comes with the engine is steam cylinder oil. It copes with the steam better than other oils. Other oils can be used but they get washed out of the cylinder and you don't get the lubrication you seek.

In this video I used alcohol (blue cleaning spirits) for fuel. You need rockwool to keep the alcohol in the burner. I since switched to gas fired as you cannot control the flame when using alcohol.

@@doppie1200 I have the same model of steam engine. As fuel I use a mixture of alcohol (ethanol) and distilled water in a ratio of 72% alcohol and 28% distilled water so that the heat does not get too great.
I also pour the alcohol mixture onto ceramic fibers. The burner is lined with aluminum foil and filled with the ceramic fibers. The whole thing works very well for me. Of course you have to be careful when refilling.
@@doppie1200 I also switched to gas (Bix from Forest Classics). Great for the Wilesco roller. My two stationery engines do not have steam valves so the gas with control valve makes sense.

Welk materiaal gebruik je in de brander slede samen met de alcohol?

Dat was gewoon steenwol. Ik heb daarna nog constructies gebruikt op basis van waterleiding. Die kan je zien in de video van de D45. Inmiddels gebruik ik een keramische brander.
Deze setup bestaat helaas niet meer. Ze kreeg last van teveel lekkage bij de cilinder. Inmiddels is ze terug gezet naar origineel met een 60-er jaren onder plaat. (nog wel met de uitlaat aanpassing)

Ik gebruik momenteel brandgel in het originele brander bakje met een beetje folie er in. Werkt ook goed, maar brand relatief kort.
Vrees dat dat met alcohol ook het geval is.
Een beetje lekkage is inherent aan een Wilesco toch? ;-)
@@joripiano Een beetje wel, maar het moet niet te gek worden. Ik had een reserve liggen en een base plate. Dus heb ik het weer omgebouwd. Ik vind rommelen met die dingen eigenlijk leuker dan het draaien. Brandgel heb ik ook gedaan een tijd. Maar dat kookte bij mij vaak over. Bij zowel brandgel als met deze steenwool truuk moet je tussentijds opnieuw vullen. Tenzij je voorverwarmd water gebruikt. Ik heb daarom toen iets met waterleidingen geknutseld dat je bij kunt vullen terwijl het draait. Werkte op zich goed. Maar wanneer je eenmaal met een keramische brander op gas hebt gedraaid wil je niet meer anders :P.
What fuel do you use?
Great machine
No idea how it's called in english tbh. Its some sort of alcohol. Spiritus 85%. Lined the burner with rockwool and aluminum foil. Don't overdo it as it can boil over. You need to refill it as it is not enough to get to boiling and run for some time. I made a version that can be refilled. This can be seen in my D45 video.
Were can you buy the material for the light?
The copper pipe is from a local modellers store. The LEDs from some Chinese webshop.
Have you ever tested the output with a multimeter? That's so awesome.
Yes, its horrible. This generator is the worst. An AAA battery will give you more power :P. Really these steam engines are toys. Better suited to heat the room than to drive something. They make up in fun factor. These Wilesco engines can only have like 1.5 bars of pressure and their cylinders are tiny. Of course it has to be safe to play with. Hence, no torque. That is why you see so many high revving Wilesco's. As soon as you put a load on it the machine struggles. LEDs are fine. But the power output is abysmal.

The dynamo is well UNDERGEARED.
Get someone to machine you a flywheel pulley of around 2" diameter- and your D20 will illuminate them brightly on almost a tick over speed!
As always? Maybe there is a reason. As I explained in the reply on my D45 the M66 dynamo is not really suited to lit LEDs as it is rated for a lower voltage than the LEDs.
To compensate for that the engine has to rev higher to get the voltage up to the required level.
Two approaches to remedy this are available, one is indeed changing the gear ratio. Alas, the 38mm is the largest that will fit on this machine.
A larger one would hit the base plate.
Modifying the dynamo would be the other option, which is what I eventually did (like on the D45). The flip side is that a dynamo rated for a higher voltage at the same rpms is limited in the current it can produce.
There is another reason you will see a lot of high revving steam engines when it comes to driving a dynamo. The reason is; wilesco lack in the torque department. Their boilers only produce 1 to 1.5 bar and the cylinders are really small and have a lot of blow by and leakages. Remember, these are only toys. To compensate for the lack of torque usually the gear ratio is chosen accordingly resulting in a higher revving engine. Like putting your bike in a lower gear to make it up a hill. So in most cases the "under gearing" makes complete sense.
Sadly, this engine is no longer operational as it has a bad cylinder I need to replace but haven't found the time to do so.
