    I think the creepiest thing about this is that most characters who have this sort of a dark backstory sound remorseful when they talk about it. Not Atton. Atton almost sounds nostalgic talking about it.

      He probably is but the stupidity of the jedi council is enough that he does not feel inclined to show it or it to surface
      End of the day if he didnt help revan many other people did and someone would take his place and the jedi asked for it with their ignorance and bad decisions which indirectly killed so many
      So even when you mellow up and say wow killing people isnt the right thing its evil and unfair. We live in an unfair world and imbalanced choices lead to unfair consequences they merited their own downfall when determining the fates over so many with stupidity

      That's because he enjoyed it. The combination of ingrained human sadism, vindictiveness against the ppl who let him die, of pride at managing to hurt and kill those who once seemed unbeatable. He took pleasure in it. A great deal.

    "Killing them wasn't the best thing; making them fall, making them see our side of it, that was the best." For all of their opposition between each other, Atton is more like Kreia than you'd know. They prefer to prove a point rather than end lives.

"He has nothing to offer to you, and even a fool like himself is not unaware of that". • @lordofcreativity9637
      @lordofcreativity9637 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@buntado6 An interesting assessment, but I would reply that in that case his biggest obstacle is his interpretation of himself. If Kreia is a mirror who reflects what one thinks of themselves, then that person still defines the image that appears in that mirror and how much power the reflection has over them. One's inner demons can hobble them when nothing else does, but once one manages to overcome those demons then they will be able to move forward. Atton like the main character and other crew members seems to be haunted by the ghosts of his past. Seeing these characters face and overcome their demons in this game and the first one are part of what I think makes the experience all the more real and meaningful.
      Ultimately one cannot change the past and ones past will always be a part of them, but the past does not necessarily have to define their future unless they allow it to do so. I have played and games before with characters who are weighed down by things like this and while it may sound cliché, it seems to me that helping and seeing them overcome their doubts, demons, and ghosts is a truly satisfying experience. I apologize for this, it seems I am feeling philosophical. These games seem to be rather good at bringing out that part of me.

    whilst i love kotor 1 and kotor 2, the amount of things kotor 2 turns on its head is insane, and how dark it gets is almost disturbing
    if kotor 2 was more like kotor 1, atton would be your basic scoundrel whose backstory would have been "i was tricked into following darth revan during the jedi civil war, i killed many people including a few jedi, and i regret it deeply" instead of this conversation where it almost sounds like his bragging about how good he was at twisting jedi to the darkside and killing those that were to pure to turn

      What's worse is that Atton's team, Sith Troopers, and officers with signs of force sensitivity were going to be put in the same way. Absolutely 100% this. KOTOR 1 was fun, but KOTOR 2's the one I keep replaying because damn if the characters weren't fantastic. It wasn't afraid to delve into some incredibly messed up themes and it permeates virtually every world you visit. When I'd get frustrated by Kreia... as a kid, it was because she kept telling me I shouldn't be nice and I hated that, but now it's about the game not giving me complex enough responses to hit back at the concepts she throws at me, because she's often not wrong. And jesus, the big reveal about why your companions are following you...
      I feel like actually making Atton this fucked up (the fact that he IS guilty about he did and wants to distance himself from that life, but mostly he's guilty about the last Jedi he killed/how personal it was/the fact that a complete stranger wasted their life on a nobody like him, and he still very much resents the Jedi and likes the idea of them suffering - he didn't flee because he thought his cause was wrong, he fled because he was a coward) really deepens the fact that the game presents him as a character who can be redeemed, as well as someone who you can rightfully refuse to forgive or who can fall straight back into those depths. For that hypothetical simplified Atton you laid out, redemption would be a binary choice; either he'd feel bad about everything he did and he's a good guy, or he wouldn't feel bad about it and he'd be a bad guy. Here, it's really not.
      And knowing Atton's depravity makes it a lot more interesting when he warns the PC about falling to the dark side, especially considering he's the character that's the most persistent about it. It's not sanctimonious at all... the guy is speaking from experience.

    Its interesting because in the EU Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker were able to hide their force signatures from other Force Sensitives that even Luke couldn't sense them as a Grand Master, but the power in the books as far as I remember never explained how that ability was achieved, but I like to think Atton's explanation about throwing up walls as a means to stop Jedi intrusion is a good explanation of how. However he isn't right technically that Jedi just pick up on surface thoughts often when others are in conflict they can sense the emotional barriers they put up, which its almost like you have to believe in the projection you are putting out to make it work.

      Even Darth Sidious, Darth Plagues, Darth Maul, and every other sith member of the rule of 2 did the same when they were among the Jedi, during their infiltration of the republic. After the empire was born, even Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda did the same In the EU. That's why it took Vader and Sidious 19 Years to find them. So the Jedi must have been aware of the technique.

    • @rippera45
      @rippera45 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In canon, hiding one's Force signature is also possible. It seems to involve not using the Force for prolonged periods, suppressing their presence in the Force, but not enough to sever the connection to it. Sidious does it. Obi-Wan does it. Yoda does it. Pretty much every surviving Jedi in new canon seems able to do it, though some are better at it than others.

    The way Atton talks about making Jedi fall, the way he savors the words as he says them is honestly quite disturbing. Still a man I'm happy to have at my side, but he most definitely has a dark side to him. Almost sadistic.

      Because he was sadistic. He didn't just kill Jedi - he HUNTED them, preyed on them and TORTURED them to the point that he wanted to see these Jedi turn to the Dark Side before he killed them. It wasn't out of duty or necessity - it was out of pure self-justification and self-pleasure. He enjoyed doing it.
      and that's why he's so terrified of telling the Exile the truth, because it's one thing to make justifications for everything you do but it's another to wake up one day and realize how far you have fallen. It is a quiet thing to fall - but far more terrible is to admit it.
