I am originally from Vlissingen and grew up with all these stories. You can still see marks in the landscape from where the dunes were bombed and the water flooded into the land. The holes in the dunes were plugged with old ships filled with sand to repair it. Luctor et Emergo!

I grew up hearing all these incredible stories from my Dutch born mother. Her family was involved in the Dutch resistance and safe houses to hide downed Allied pilots before smuggling them back to England.
They loved the Canadian soldiers who freed them and shared their food (my Mom the eldest and two other siblings teeth came in brown from malnutrition). My grandparents with 9 children in tow (2 born later )emigrated to Canada on the ship Zuiderkruis (which hit an iceberg that flooded the boiler room but it managed to limp into Halifax ,Nova Scotia) This year marks the 70th anniversary with a family reunion and legacy of over 300+ descendants ( need to a headcount!) .
You should cover Leo Major the decorated but little known French- Canadian soldier and his exploits in the Bartle of the Scheldt. He single handedly liberated the town of Zwolle and captured 93 Nazi soldiers despite losing an eye in a grenade attack. His story is on YTUBE but he merits his own movie!
First video of yours that randomly came in my feed and taught me something new .You do good work.
May there be peace in our realm soon!

I'm quite impressed by your pronunciation. It's the closest one could come using only English sounds.
Though the exception is the word 'zuid'. The u is a vowel here and with the I it makes a unique diphthong. You can always look up the Dutch sound yourself, but if you want to approximate it, try 'zouid' with the ou of south and the id of void.

I would say “zuid” sounds like zowt.

I think you mean the world.
Every country on earth that has a water issue, always calls the Netherlands for help.
Except for the stubborn Italians, hence why Venice is sinking.

I have read a lot about the exploits of the Canadian Army in WW2 and the Canadian Army was never given credit for the awful conditions they had to fight in and their role in allowing the approaches to Antwerp to be opened. It is sad in how the Dutch had to endure all this and it so their credit they just rebuil

    • @marklittle8805
      @marklittle8805 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Ikreisrond as a Canadian I thank you for that, and I know that the Netherlands appreciated the Canadians and their liberation of a lot of the country. That said, you see movies made about WW2 out of Hollywood and you would never know the Canadian Army landed in Normandy or fought Germany at all

And this is why Montgomery was an amateur . as amateurs think in strategy and tactics where Professionals think in logistics.
And that is why market garden failed and the war prolonged by months .

Market Garden was a total desaster for the English. The recent book by Beevor on Market Garden makes this very clear.

Contaminated river water is a big issue. Westerschelde is currently gaining attention in the news, but is a nationwide problem.

My Granddad escaped forced labor from Colon, Germany and became a Resistance fighter on the flooded Island of Tholen.
Almost the entire island was forced evacuated by the Germans.
Only some essentials had to stay to performan some repair & maintenance to several defense works , seadike, sluice Gates or water level management.
Some could remain on the Island like in Tholen City , St.Annaland and Oud-Vossemeer.

The Dutch and sea level rising... A lot of people think sea level rising is only caused presently by human influence on the Earth. But the now island of Great Britain was once connected to the mainland Europe by dry land. At the same time the area now called Netherlands was not below sea level at that moment. By sea level rising caused by melting ice the Northsea was formed and later, I understood around the Mediaeval times the peatland was flooded by sea water and the wind made lakes out of the flooded peat lands. This way also the Zuiderzee or Southsea was formed. So probably (oral) history carried that knowledge to the 1500's when technology was developed enough to polder these lakes again and get the land back from the sea. In the 1930's the Southsea was dammed off by the Afsluitdijk and became fresh water IJsselmeer. The rest is history.
I live in Waterland, North-Holland and I heard saying the level of the peat and marshes was 14 m above sea level a very long time ago. I always thought the peat came down on drying out... today I realize it's a combination of the rise of the sea level with a couple of meters and the decline of the drying peat with a couple of meters.
Last week I was riding my bicycle and yes the Dutch water management bodies are already busy making the dikes 2 m higher at this moment, including new pumping station. So sea level rise will not surprise us. We don't know anything else.

Flooding has been a dutch war tactic for centuries. Check Watergeuzen (De Hoekse en Kabelwajwse twisten) all the way to the more recent, De Grebbelinie flooding.
