Perhaps the movie was a reflection of Vincent's life - underappreciated by the masses. As an artist I am so in tune with Vincent's life and great artistry. I also understand the pain and suffering of rejection. It's true a great artist is not a peaceful soul.

In india, in my city only one hall out of like 25 were playing it, jam packed on a Wednesday work day 11pm in the night, the whole hall applauded and some were misty eyed like me, it made me feel different about that otherwise normal day.
      Thanks for letting me share.

After watching this film, I look at Van Gogh’s work with a whole new meaning. I’m lucky enough to live near an art museum that has a few of his paintings. I’ve walked by and glanced at them dozens of times before, but now I stop and stare at all of them for the longest time. It’s like I’m visiting a friend and I don’t want to leave.
“Now I understand.” -that line sums it up for me.

The thing that scares me is that they always will be people like Vincent (well not exactly like him because everyone is unique but with their own sensitive souls) but not everyone will be remembered like he is. In our world it's hard to be sensitive, it always has been. We can go through life praising Vincent and regretting that none gave him the recognition he deserved but at the same time not notice all the unique and beautiful people around us that would need our help. Or we can be those sensitive souls and go unnoticed. While I'm in no way such a beautiful person as Vincent, I'd like to think I'm sensitive. The problem is that it's hard to find people like you or those who accept you, I feel like a background character in my own life, and the thought of dying and achieving nothing in this world really scares me. It's sad that the example of Vincent didn't teach us all to appreciate the sensitivity because if we don't learn this, there will be always people like Vincent - misunderstood, lonely but beautiful and meaningful that could change the world if only someone let them do it.

something in me tells me if i don't live what is mine to live, i will die of heartbreak anyway. that's how we bcm insensitive. bcz to be sensitive means facing our truths.

we wait for and want validation of a big award and when it doesn't come (bcz it has greater priorities i am sure), we feel disappointed.
he lived his truth, he didn't live the life most of us live - a lie we dare not burn down because we are too scared of walking our true path.

For me, the lyrics "But I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" hit me hardest because throughout the movie I just thought about how I could have told him that this world was not ready for his perception of beauty and artistry. I think a lot of us thought about how we wish we could have told him that he had no idea what would happen in one hundred years - how much he would not only be respected but appreciated and adored. That people would not only see his paintings and see them as attractive pictures but would see the emotion and tender care and beauty behind each painting and say "This man understands. He feels deeply, indeed. And it is beautiful."
What we could have told you, Vincent...

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now
    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for
    One as beautiful as you
    Starry, starry night
    Portraits hung in empty halls
    Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
    Perhaps they never will

just home from watching the film. I was hoping for this song, but would have preferred Don Mc Lean `s version. which is more emotional in its simplicity and more adequate to Vincent. [Verse 1]
    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and green
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land
    [Chorus]
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now
    [Verse 2]
    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue
    Colours changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are sooth beneath the artist's loving hand

How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how
      Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
      On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for
      One as beautiful as you.
      Starry, starry night
      Portraits hung in empty halls
      Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
      Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
      Perhaps they never will.

We have to thank Don McLean for this song “Vincent”, which is a tribute to him. When I listen to this song I get teary because it’s so sad. In particular the word in the chorus:
    - how you suffered for your sanity
    - how you tried to set them free
It’s very sad how a sensitive person like Vincent was misunderstood. He had to struggle with his mental conditions etc & in the end he committed suicide.
We must learn & understanding sensitive people. We all have different degrees of sensitivity. We must do our best to understand each other & love each other.

Funny thing about human society. Its the tragedy of the man that made him famous, not his work, nor the man himself. If Van Gogh would have begged in the streets instead of killing himself, this song and the film wouldn't have been made. Tragedy sells, sufferings do not.
Among 7.5 billion people in the world, it would have just taken one soul to hug him and say he mattered, that could have saved him. The world couldn't even managed that.
How many Vincent are we missing today? Look around. Be that one soul that could give the surviving hug, because you matter too. Maybe then we wont have to cry at another sad song over a tragedy of negligence.

Weathered faces lined in pain, are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. Possibly the finest line in pop music

Trivia. When he was still alive, only one of his paintings was sold. He didn't know that it was his brother Theo who bought it. Now, his painting is worth millions.

It's a phenomenal movie, finally I can be pround of a fellow Pole. I can't stress enough how much appreciation and respect I have for the creators and actors involved in the process of making of this film. I hope it gets an Oscar and the worldwide recognition it deserves. The song is really beautiful too. Lianne's voice is so smooth and warm.

Every time I listen to this especially at the ending credits of the movie, Loving Vincent, I always get mesmerised by her voice. I feel she is talking to Vincent and trying to soothe him. Besides, it reminds of the Doctor who, one of which had a scene about Vincent van Gogh. I reckon he would react to this song the same way as he did when a curator in Doctor who was acclaiming Vincent’s work. Such a beautiful song..

Never thought I hear a better rendition of this tribute/song than McLeans. The sadness in her voice captures the essence of the film. The genius was hidden in the open and nobody saw him, much less appreciated him. Now all the accolades pour in but, alas, the recipient of all this belated adoration is long gone.... and suffered greatly while he was around.
