I can personally see Astro Bot lasting quite a while, as they can simply tweak Astro’s design and features to match the next console(s). And there’s probably plenty more obscure games to reference, so they can go for a bit longer on that!
Over those years, Sony was trying to find a definitive mascot for PlayStation, but couldn’t find it. Each character mascot has changed for a number of reasons. With Astro Bot’s success, I think that we should see these characters make a comeback in the future. I would definitely would want to see Sackboy make a comeback whether it’s a sequel to Sackboy: A Big Adventure or a new Little Big Planet game. Maybe for the Little Big Planet series, it all about creating your own levels if it’s 3D or 2D. This video is great CGE
I'm always down for a history lesson on gaming's most iconic characters/mascots, especially from you, CGE. I was born in the early 2000's and played on only Nintendo consoles until I was 14, when I got my PS4 and played Uncharted 4, so I'm very grateful that I now get to experience so many amazing new next-gen titles, as well as anticipate remakes, remasters and ports of older IP's so I can catch up on what I missed out on. Funny story, I actually played Astro's Playroom for the first time just a few weeks ago, and holy crap was it impossible to put down! I even 100%-ed the whole thing, which is what I try to do for most 3D platformers anyway, but Astro deserved it that much. So yeah, I'm definitely picking up Astro Bot sometime in the future. Enjoy every second of the spotlight, Astro! And I can't wait to see all who come after!
Just as a mini add-on to where Astro got his start: The AR Bots (that's what the small bots are called) are known from the Tech Demo for the PS4 camera "The Playroom", which the PSVR "The Playroom VR" is basically a sequel to. Astro himself (or rather Captain Astro/Astro Bot) has his spotlight in "Rescue Mission", one of the mini games in the Playroom VR that basically got its own game with "Astro Bot - Rescue Mission" for PSVR before "Astro's Playroom" and "Astro Bot". Sorry if it's possibly a bit ranty, but the full on story behind Astro is just interesting, especially bc Team Asobi was basically Playstation Studio's tech team before they created the "The Playroom" tech demo
This was a very nice history lesson on playstation mascots! I had heard about polygonman and toro but didn't know too much about them and it was very interesting!
Agreed, he was the first and help give Sony an identity, without Crash PlayStation is nowhere near popular as it is, probably lags behind Nintendo during the 5th generation
26:02 can confirm this, if it wasn’t for Astro Bot, I wouldn’t have given a second chance to the Parappa games. Now I’m a huge fan of it and I’m sad there is still nothing new of it (the fact that there is still no Um Jammer Lammy port for PS Classics in its 25th anniversary feel so wrong) aside from the occasional merch. Also, remember that time when sega said “here, we are making 5 remakes (and more to come) for old ips after years of nothing”? Sony could learn some stuff from them, huh
I became a fan of the series prior to the Astro Bot cameo (a few months before the game was even revealed at the State of Play) but I thought I joined in the fandom too late until I saw both Parappa and Lammy in Astro Bot which made me scream lol. And you did a very wise choice by giving the series a second chance just like me😅

Only the PS1 never had a game featuring him (The Vita only had a port) Apes (From Ape Escape): They were everywhere back then from the PS1 to PSP Patapons: For the PSP PS: Nathan Drake, Cole MacGrath, and Aloy are often mentioned, but like Kratos they aren't mascot material, and unlike him they had less games on less consoles
I love that each PlayStation console came with a new mascot, rather than just relying on the same one for decades. It really showed, at the time, how they explored new ideas and IPs while also knowing when to bring a franchise to an end so that it doesn't become boring
Toro Inoue will always be the mascot of the PlayStation brand to me, even if he is practically unknown outside of Japan and all, and with the internet's increasing love for silly cats and such, I think now would be a good time for Sony to reintroduce him, Kuro and the rest of their Pokepi posse to the west in some capacity. I'm glad you acknowledged Toro here! Also, while PaRappa was briefly mentioned, I'm surprised he wasn't talked about a little more when compared to Spyro as he was pretty huge in Japan for a while, and I'm also surprised that the Pipo Monkeys from Ape Escape and Abe from Oddworld weren't mentioned either, as people tended to treat them as PlayStation mascots too; the Pipo Monkeys were especially popular in Japan from what I know, with their popularity even spilling back into the west for a while, and while Oddworld isn't a first-party Sony franchise, neither were Crash and Spyro in fairness. All in all though, this is a pretty solid video covering quite a bit of PlayStation history! Great watch!
2 things I would like to add: 1: Sackboy was also available on PS4 unlike Astro's Playroom, so, while I don’t know how exactly well SABA sold, Astro's Playroom didn’t cannibalize the game's sales 2: Mm stopped making LBP games after 2 not just for Tearaway, but also Dreams (which was also a sandbox game but didn’t find the same success as LBP) Great video regardless
Tbh, Astro - or rather the AR Bots - got their start in the PS4 camera tech demo "The Playroom", so those small beans aren't just from PSVR and PS5. Astro himself got his start from the Playroom VR. But IDK the metacritic score for The Playroom, but can't imagine that high. But yeah, the initial point definitely stands, just a small note that got forgotten in the video (the fact that Astro comes from the PSVR, even though the small bots are known from the PS4)
I grew up with Playstation because of those mascots and great titles. Throughout my life of gaming I enjoyed, Crash, Spyro, Jak, Sly, Ratchet, Little Big Planet and Astro Bot. I love Playstation and I played all consoles from 1 to 5. Sadly now that my best favorites like Crash and Spyro are owned by Xbox, I won't get to see any more games for Playstation. But that doesn't stop me. I still love playing the classics and I always look forward to new titles to play. Like Astro Bot was awesome, I love how it brings almost every single main game character to dedicate Playstation's 30th anniversary. And I'm so glad they brought back those games I loved playing as a kid. I can't wait to see more new and exciting games. I like Sonic and Mario too, but I'd rather stick with the kind of consoles I'm used to playing with. There will be more mascots coming our way, and I'm sure they will be as fun as those others you mentioned in your video. And let's hope they all come back together again just like they did before.

I always appreciate when people give a proper history lesson about who has actually owned Crash Bandicoot since the beginning. Too many people still say stuff like "Sony sold the rights", which is just blatant misinformation.
It is sadly a huge thing that people still get mixed up with. Many playstations' initial set of titles weren't owned by sony; tomb raider, crash, spyro, etc. Which I do think in the end was a mistake to not lock them in and buyout the rights. Sony sometimes still makes that kind of mistake today lol
Thanks for sharing. If I didn't get exposed to Crash and Spryo (now owned by Microsoft) back in late 1998, I wouldn't get a PlayStation and continuing playing games on Nintendo consoles via the Nintendo 64 and beyond lol
Both Mario and Sonic have things that make them much more iconic than any other mascots. Mario is not only the king of the platformers but also the party games and especially the kart racing games and although not as good as Final Fantasy or Persona, Mario does have a few great RPGs and a lot of other amazing spin-offs series such as Luigi's Mansion , warioware, donkey kong, yoshi mario sports games, and more. Sonic on the other hand is not only popular in games but also in comics, TV shows, movies and other forms of multimedia things. Side note: I'm not saying that there aren't any platformers that are better than Mario, but Mario has the most 10 out of 10 platformers, and even games like the New Super Mario series or Mario Sunshine are good games, what I meant by this is Mario is the most consistent of the platformer franchises
As successful as they were, I wish Sony didn’t have a closed mindset of just appealing to edgy and older gamers during the PS1. Imo they should’ve always strived for their “Play Has No Limits” mantra by appealing to ALL audiences by having a mascot as the face of the company that reaches for the casual/families like Mario, Siren for the horror fans, Killzone for shooter fans, their own Pokémon, and the games they currently make for AAA fans. I think that way they could’ve differentiated themselves from Nintendo by truly being the company the reaches for ALL gamers, not just the casual ones.

Ratchet & Clank Fan Fatigue? What is this jargon?!? Sir, I think you were complaining about a GOOD THING! I miss getting a new Ratchet and Clank game every year or few years. Those were the GOLDEN DAYS for consumers!!! Now we are half a decade or more between games, and as a life long fan, it’s kind of sad. I would prefer to have more than one game per console if possible. That being said I will still sing high praise to Insomniac Games for keeping their baby alive where the other PlayStation Mascots have fallen. I got my PSP, PS3, PSVita, PS4, and PS5 SPECIFICALLY to play Ratchet & Clank. And I will continue doing so as long as Insomniac Games and Sony PlayStation continue making more games. Back to the subject of the video, it’s the sheer number of titles Ratchet & Clank has under its belt across every PlayStation console since their debut that lets me argue in Good Conscience that R&C are PlayStation’s Ultimate Mascots that have stood the test of time, stayed relevant, and God Willing continue to do so.
Fan fatigue is something that applies to more casual fans. Die hard fans, while of course will be happy to get a new game nearly yearly, die hards only amount for... around 10% of the gaming base (no way to get broken down measurement y'know?) But the sales speak for that- according to data- the first ratchet and Clank sold over 4 million copies... and there was a steady decrease in sales until into the nexus; which was approx just over 600k. However, after a long break, and the 2016 game came out, the sales rocketed up to 7+ million. And as of June 2023 rift apart was shy of 4 million. Fan fatigue is real- and while die hards want nothing more then endless content- it's better for a franchise to breathe. As an old saying goes "how can I miss ya if you never leave?!" :P
Spyro is mentioned! But he was one of a few mascots- but not THE mascot like Crash Was. Crash's marketing had him take the spot as Playstations Mario. This ain't discounting spyro of course!
I guess Spyro was not one of the main mascots mostly because he was not popular in Japan, since they ruined the JP version of Spyro 1 with that weird camera
Went from the GOATED series with great characters to a soulless crappy platformer with a mascot with no identity of its own. A game that got by on brand nostalgia and pretty graphics. Nothing more than a mausoleum of dead IP in addition to more recent stuff. Truly PlayStation’s worse generation and mascot. It’s basically just their version of a minion. 🤦♂️ Should’ve locked-down Crash or went all-in on Sackboy.
