    Hey there, I hear many concerns about this project. Like anything else I do this can be dangerous. And just like anything else I make there are other and better ways to accomplish same or better results. As some pointed out in comments these cans are not made to be re-filled many times, fatigue induced fracture from repeated cycling might be an issue. I leave my compressor on the floor when airbrushing so in case that happens it won't be near my face. Thank you for watching!

      Ive done somthing similar to a small workshop compressor, by adding an old propane tank. I found the pump can over heat when filling the tanks. I may try adding a fan or adding some sort of additional heatsink/vaning to the pump head.

    Love the safety reminder about used fuel cans ,any type of fuel ! Tank can be a large single tank (freon , helium , etc .) in the U.S. the heavier walled propane tanks (bernz-o-matic ) multiple smaller tanks can have a manifold made from plumbing tees, and nipples if the ability , tools , or material to match yours is not available . Outstanding idea for improving a compressors performance .

      @foldionepapyrus3441 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Airbrush work at low pressures so the can's are almost certainly fine - Personally I'd just have used fizzy drink type bottles being cheap, up to the pressure and having that harder plastic lid to affix fittings for the hoses too.

    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tcarney57 As PVC breaks in a similar way to glass, I'd not recommend that. Though normal plumbing pipes should take these low pressure just fine - fizzy drinks bottle plastic deform very plasticly (so no sharp shards) when then fail so if it did fail (which with this pressure level is unlikely). Much safer than something more prone exploding into sharp shards.
      If you do build any questionable pressure chamber a thin screen of anything at all is highly recommended - even just some old fabric loosely secured will make it safer, hopefully catching any bottle rocket or shrapnel moments enough to prevent injury. Even low pressure can be dangerous, but under 50psi (airbrushes are usually in the 30-40psi ballpark) is pretty safe. Please don't go playing with higher pressures if you don't know what you are doing!

    • @evilcanofdrpepper
      @evilcanofdrpepper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What about a FREE helium tank that was empty so you didn't have to deal with the flammable gas issue. You will have to deal with the plumbing but I think that is Beyer than those cans. It did look like he tried to put threads onto the numb he attached that hose to. The question i.e. was that intentional or just a result of a failed previous attempt as it want on the prototype and it want filmed as if his earlier failure with leaks was intend intentionally hidden.
      I wonder if wrapping it in duct tape would make an "unexpected immediate decompression" slightly less dangerous? Would it catch the shratenal or just make the decompression occur with more force?

    This is a very clever setup. My concern may be unfounded, but I would primarily just be worried that having those tanks so tightly packed together could cause an explosion if expansion occurs. Just for the sake of comfort, it might be worth spacing them out a little more. Regardless, great way to save money if you know the risk attached.

    hey! you should consider putting a one way valve on the main inlet tube, the one that goes to of the compressor. then you could fill the tanks, unplug them and take only the tanks with you. I'm not certain how much you could do with that, but for small jobs, it would be smaller and lighter to carry around.

  • @boehst
    @boehst 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cans will split at the seams when they go, not explode! So there is no real danger of splinters flying around. I copied your design but glued in niples on the cans as I didn't get the hoses to stay airtight. Pity there is no way of sending you a picture or two of my solution. I'm still short two cans for the project, but will get there in time. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    I find the use of hose clamps for compressed air ... disturbing... put wheels on the box so if one does let go, it will self-propel around the shop till the air runs out.

    • @jandastroy
      @jandastroy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've seen hose clamps used on smaller barbs to hold hose fittings on that see 100 psi on the regular, they're plenty strong. The clear hosing used in this case is probably the weakest component here.

    Out of curiosity, why not just use an old fire extinguisher, paintball canister, scuba tank, propane/oxygen/mapp cylinder, or some other larger sturdy tank? Was it just availability? Surely if this is to be a permanent installation you'd want something a bit more robust.
    I mean, if it works, it works. It just seems a bit like a spare tire, a temporary solution meant to provide some needed function only until a proper solution can be implemented.

    spray cans hold mostly liquid form contents (yes, even torch "gas" ) so they don't need to be able to take much pressure and should not be used as pressure vessels even for a low criticality application like spray painting.. In any case, for a little airbrush, if the settings are correct on both brush and compressor, it doesn't actually need a tank, and can operate continuously off the compressor.. Your compressor just happens to be very loud- mine is incredibly quite and just makes a quiet whirring sound- the air filter unit in the room is louder..

  • @RickHowell89

    I would suggest a valve to release the pressure when you are done. Leaving compressed air in a container like that unless you pulled ALL the water out of it will cause water build up in your tanks.

    Empty one-way O2 bottles work also (mini oxy-acetylene kits), not much larger than those cans, but as they are made for holding 100bars, albeit only for one filling, they have quite some safety margin.
