The transition from the instrumental music to Van Halen is perfectly timed and couldn’t have been any better placed. Movies need to get back to standards like this.

I stopped by Wakita in May of this year on my way home from Fort Worth to Minneapolis just to pay homage to Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman at the water tower.
I was just there last year on my way to San Diego. It was so cool seeing the water tower. Needless to say I have my picture with it. :p Did you go to the Twister Cafe down the road and see the museum?

This movie is such a good movie I was born in 1996 and its definitely one of my favorite movies a must watch around tornado season here in Minnesota.

So far I’ll be completing my Minor in mathematics this fall and then next spring or summer I can finally jump into my grad program 😭 it’s taking time. But I got time. One of those “if you really want it, don’t stop.” situations.

That helicopter descent shot onto Jonas’ convoy is one of my favorite shots ever put to film. Not to mention it was done practically. Cars drove slow as the chopper came down, then they sped it up to look highway speed.

this is one of the greatest scenes ever to be filmed, the acting, the energy, the sexual tension, the camerawork, the music, the action, the truck, the buildup, it's just so well done, I think it's probably the most underappreciated film out there, it has it all
It really is a masterpiece.
They portray the two lead protagonists still being in love with perfection. With Bill living in some strong denial and Jo shamelessly still in overtly in love with Bill.
I was about to say something similar. The whole segment of dinner at Meg's to rushing out the door is MORE than just watching a movie. The vibe feels like you're sitting at that dinner table, and as they're rolling out of town against the backdrop of the water tower, you're on this journey with them. It's no longer just a piece of entertainment.
The way all their cars form a line, with the camper in position and red truck in the lead, God it's epic, and when the truck goes into the turn you can't help but feel excited about what's happening.
By contrast, Jonas and all those identical SUVs and trailers look so institutional and sterile that they don't conjure up any emotional response at all. More of a creepy sci-fi vibe, or like they're there to clean up a chemical spill.

The part with the camera going over the hills seeing the crew driving and that part of the song hits is magic.

This is the most fun scene in the movie, i could just watch it over and over and never get bored. The way the music builds up and the fun that the team has before their 'near miss' with Jonas' team

+Felamine Station wagons were born from muscle cars. Up until the Japanese invasion they had more than enough power to lay rubber down or tow a camping trailer. Never underestimate a station wagon.

One thing that I always enjoyed about this scene other than the phenomenal cinematography and music, is the characterization of both convoys of vehicles.
Jonas' convoy looks very strict to form and each car looks nearly identical to the last, giving it a very "serious business", sort of look with no room for personality to show. Makes sense as he is the main antagonist of the movie, besides the tornadoes themselves of course.
Then there is the stark contrast of Jo and Bill's convoy, where each vehicle looks unique, colorful and visually more interesting in general. There's a clearer aspect of fun involved with the business here. Which fits with the cast of colorful individuals Jo and Bill's team consists of.

Sadly, this film has become a bit of a period piece. Storm chasing is nowhere near like this today. Part of the reason why I didn’t go into storm chasing and meteorology.

That's one reason why this scene always stuck with me, this giant wide-open shot, that then zooms down for tight shot on the convoy, zooming down the road. Paired with Mancina's score, it's stuck with me over 2 decades.
The cinematography in this film is outstanding and has some of the best camera work I've ever seen for an event film. The SFX hold up very well too as well even today.
I talked to a friend who does aerial cinematography about this shot. He said they filmed it with the cars driving slow, and then sped the shot WAY up.

That one and shot prior where the water tower enters frame, followed by a tilt down to Bill's convoy. And Mancina's rendition of Van Halen makes for the absolute best blood pumper!

Even as a kid, I noticed the look Aunt Meg gives Melissa after she tells her that she better run. It’s a skeptical “She won’t cut it for Bill” face. Like she knew Melissa was in over her head.

Honestly, thanks to watching this movie as much as I did as a kid, Jo’s personality helped shape my taste in women. A tomboyish gal that can throw down and keep pace with the rowdy guys.

Cannot believe this was 1996 and it's STILL a great flick. Friends of mine went down to OK and watched parts being filmed and they used helicopters to drop some of the larger debris! Still rocking in 2022!!

Most of the movie WAS filmed in Oklahoma. The notable exception is the F3 tornado scene on the hill. That was in Iowa.

What's so awesome is the electric guitar with the orchestra getting you amped up and then when he says "there's a little detour, we're gonna take a walk in the woods" (which is so badass to me) followed by the hard rock song by Van Halen as they start off-roading. And the excitement they feel as they go over the bumps in the road. Makes you feel like you're on this journey with them and you feel as pumped as they are.
This movie has so much meaning to me. Reminds me so much of my childhood!! Between this and the first jurassic park I don't have anything that reminds me of my childhood more ❤

Scenes like this transcend the screen and feel like more than watching a movie. It feels like you're part of something important or are at least bearing witness to something monumental.
I feel the same way about certain scenes in Independence Day. Bigger than a movie. It becomes more something that marks an era than a random 90-minute/2 hour movie you saw over the weekend.
Other comparisons are the Delorean reveal, fight sequences in Gladiator, any 3 hour 90s movie on 2 tapes, Drew Barrymore in Scream, Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World, Hasta La Vista Baby.
They cease to be movie clips and just become part of your life. I dunno how else to put it!

Bill Paxton said back in 2012 that he "was struck with an idea" for a sequel during vacation but that a sequel would need permission from Steven Spielberg (who produced the first one). There's been mention of it here and there since then, but I doubt it would happen given that the first one had a perfect conclusion. It'd be nice to see, but as a lover of the first movie who watched it everyday as a child, there as to be a good story and the cast of the original (although Philip Seymour Hoffman died) has to come back. Who knows? I'm not ruling a sequel out as a fan, I just don't want a repeat of the first one like Into The Storm did.

lol. I've been watching this movie for 16 years. Saw it 4 times in the theater and over 200 times since.
This is the exact reason that "Humans Being" by Van Halen has become my storm chasing anthem. Leaving tomorrow on a 4 day storm chase through the midwest, can't wait to crank this song, (look for it to be in the background in the videos I am sure to post, lol)

I hope Melissa kept in contact with Dusty, when she was crying he was holding the Umbrella for her feeling sad, heard something deep over the radio. He showed compassion to her and definitely needed this kind of lively man in her life. Hope we get her as a cameo in the sequel visiting Jo and they mention stories of bill and dusty

In today's world, Rabbit wouldn't even use the maps. He'd either use a GPS in the truck or Google Maps app on a tablet or iPad.
+MNsportsnut your right. I use two gps when I'm chasing. One for my radar to see where I am in regards to the storm and a gps mounted in the truck. Though I guess a paper map would be a good thing as well.
+MNsportsnut Well if you really knew what you were doing, you would use neither because abandoned roads, tractor roads, or side roads that stormchasers use are usually not marked and deleted from google maps or other shitty navigational services. And that's assuming the tornado didn't snap all the cell towers in the are you are chasing.

Unless you download the data and keep a large record, GPS/Google Maps is useless. I’ve chased through the rural parts of Missouri and Iowa and there are places that lose reception in an instant. On a good day they may still have one or two bars; under a storm, forget about it.

I've always liked Jonas' truck. I've never seen a dually suburban in real live though. Apparently, those are rare trucks.
They're probably made for the movie only. They did the same with the hunting jeeps in Jurassic Park Lost World.
Same here. Square body Suburbans are awesome. Custom Dually Suburbans are rare too. They were probably built for customers and companies that towed heavy duty trailers like construction, horse trailers, and campers. There were also Custom built Suburban limousines that had 6-8 doors used by airports at one time.
I used to be scared of storms thanks to a close call of a tornado touching down like a block of us kinda behind us. The funnel formed & at that moment my dad spotted the funnel shit hit the fan outside, the electric flickered on & off a few times, the gusty winds, deadly lightening, crashing thunder. I remember most of it, I just don't remember what the cloud looked like. After the funnel split, everything calmed down. We were calming down, cause we really didn't have a place to seek shelter, & it's very rare for a tornado you hit here, we have bluffs that somehow pushes the worst of the storm north & around us. The lightening went on for hours, with a dark green sky, lightening flashes brightening outside up like daytime. I was so glad you be able to go to bed & sleep then to not have a house. But that's why I was scared of storms until I was 17 & all of a sudden I overcame my fear. I love storms now, the worst the better, I'd love to chase, but I'd get myself killed in a heartbeat. It's best that I don't drive while chasing, cause I'd be trying to see the tornado, & watch my driving to save my ass.
