Great review but I think you put too much emphasis on this being an entry level bike. While I don't necessarily disagree with you, this bike should not be limited to that. I've read and seen enough on this bike and virtually no one is calling this a starter bike. It's got everything an experienced rider really needs. I really hate when people put certain bikes in their own little boxes. When did a 900cc bike become an entry level motorcycle?

I agree wholeheartedly, I currently have a Ducati monster 796 and I have ridden for 27 years, and even I'm thinking about getting one as a fun weekend bike to replace the Duc. It's just a fun bike with just enough hp on the motorway and so much torque to get away from the lights

Entry level? I've been riding for 51 years, and this is my favorite bike - it could use better brakes and suspension, but it is just fun to ride, and that's what this is all about, isn't it? Don't worry about those headwinds - I took this on a 2,200 mile round trip to Alabama, 75-80 all the way, no problem.
Yeah I don't know how a 900 can be considered entry level, but I guess from Triumph's perspective it's their entry level bike.

I live in Chicago. This bike is GREAT for urban riding. I've ridden and have friends who ride larger Harleys and other cruisers and they are misery.
This bike has all the power you need in stop and go. It's smaller stature makes it a lot easier to find parking with.
If you wouldn't have said "entry level" in every other sentence I would have agreed with what you said. 900cc shouldn't be relegated to "entry level" status. This bike will do whatever you need it to within reason.
I have that exact one. Same color. I love it and wouldn't change a thing. It's perfect. I have had all categories of bikes except a tourer but this bike is my pick for an all around fun street bike.
38kkm done, one recommendation I can have is checking the valves about 15-20kkm max and change oil every 10kkm max and use 10W50 if riding in hot climate.
I got this as my starter bike. Love it. A little small for me but still real comfortable and really maneuverable. I love twisting the throttle and it goes, and glad it does not rev sky high egging me on to speed. I don’t need that, great fun bike. More expensive then other bikes with more power..but looks nicer and has more torque. I don’t need a bigger bike...but will probably move up to the speed twin on street triple some day.

Good review mate. I love my Street twin. Definitely not an entry level bike but you could say its Triumphs entry level in comparison to say the T120 and Thruxton.
I have a two Harleys and I would consider buying this. When I was a kid I thought that the Triumph was King. I never owned one.
Probably still is; for those who insist on cruisers, it covers all basis, no one has topped the sport bikes for handling, and fit and finish are without equal. Unless you want to do 200 mph down the highway. Nothing against Harley, but I can't see them competing against the current Triumph crop.
I did own Triumphs in the 60’s, just bought a 2018 ST, and love it. I also have a Harley Road King-I guess for some of us, there always be only two real motorcycles!

I think, this bike could be a wunderful second-bike. After a ride with a Speedy for example, take the twin for a relaxed
cruising through the city or nearly Area without stress.

I don't like to categorise bikes too much. You mentioned many times that it is good entry level bike. Yes it is affordable (to me) but it is no more easy or difficult to ride than a T100 or a T120 for a first time rider. A good entry level bike in my day was a 50cc moped or a Honda 125. I am an old fart, in my 70s, who wants to recapture a bit of the old retro style, although the twin may appeal to the younger rider (with enough cash) also. I have a street triple and now need a more sedate toy to potter around on for weekend rides or day trips or a trip to town. The triple is great but being an older guy and 5 feet six inches tall it is not comfortable for me now. I am therefor considering the twin. The street twin is quite simply a good bike which will also appeal to folk like me. Time will tell but, like me, this bike is not ready to be put in a box and categorised as anything but a good bike with retro looks.....sort of plus a host of accessories availabe to customise it to your hearts content.
As you say entry level is a 125, 250 as my son did. Perhaps step up to a first larger capacity, around 50 bhp a better phrase. This bike is well balanced low seat (feet both on the ground) slick clutch and gearbox manageable. Torque where you want it low down not to much power so not intimidating easy peasy to ride. My son who is around your height loved it and a very sound next step on his journey which sounds good and looks cool too!
Awesome review and agrees to pretty much all points....however....
Just a quick negative/+Ve points summary from my ownership of the bike for 1 year now...
Negative Points:
1. Gas tank could have been little bigger (when you ride long time it sucks to refill often, trust me you won't even realize how long you have gone on ST: Personal Experience)
2. Some improvements on Suspensions & brakes would be nice (Rear brakes sucks but hey..who uses that...?)
3. Official Backrest for passenger (No official accessories available yet: you don't wanna make your passenger fall off especially with this crazy torque...that ST has although clutch assist might save you but no guarantee)
4. Official & stylish windscreen. (their wind screen doesn't look that promising: might go after market later on once I am tired of wind hitting me on chest/face)
These are the points they could have done little better....buy hey... no bike is perfect and I have no issues with it whatsoever.
Positive points hoooraayyyy:
1. Exhaust Sound (First and Main reason why I own this Bike right now Damn too good: Just don't want to stop my bike once I start it)
2. Torque (Sickest Torque ever I felt on bike.... slightly less than Commuter Train. LOL not kidding, this thing flies man....)
3. Handling (Jesus, even 14 year old can handle this baby....so smooth, nimble and fun ride. Its like a Toy...trust me)
4. Fuel Efficiency (I do pretty good in California. 56-63 MPG. By the way i dont ride like a shit...just enjoy the nice rumbling throaty sound and have fun....)
5. Looks (well, no doubt about it. Perfect balance of Modern yet classic heritage)

Daniel D not sure. I personally have done 100mph. But engine wasnt stressed out yet. So I can imagine it can go still up. I think they do pretty well. Check out some of videos related to triumph street twin. For the clear exhaust sound.

DirectorLJ well, my 56 mpg is on mostly Cali freeways. If I would have to guess on crowded city such as NYC rides then I would safely cut down mpg to around 45-50 or so. Mind well, with pay load (another passenger ) apply some factor to it too. Reason for the tank in mpg in city is bike has only 5 gears as you may already know. So less efficient it could become during city rides as you may not be able to change gears so often. Does it make sense? Hope that helps.
Meaning, every ride you may have to keep refilling the tank.

Ok *Edit* this 900cc SOHC parallel twin 4stroke engine makes 55hp @ 5900rpm and 59 ft-lbs of torque @ 3230rpm (WOW, INSANE torque number) this 900cc parallel twin has a 270 degree crank giving it a V-twin like firing order/characteristics. This is a superb bike specs wise. it has 4 valves per cylinder and the bike weighs 436lbs wet. Great beginner bike #'s
I like that white paint job. I'm considering either this bike or the speed twin.
Had one and loved it save for one thing. A month of electric woes. They finally tore the engine out and replaced an entire wiring harness :-(
I now ride a Yamaha MT 07. Not quite the classic look I love about the Street Twin, but I trust the reliability a bit more.
What year Triumph did you have?
It was a 2016. To their credit, the dealer gave me a loaner T120 Black for the 3 weeks my bike was out of commission. But I have to admit, it did put a bad taste in my mouth for Triumph. Before I even picked up the bike, they had to replace a part under recall, which made me wait 4 days after I purchased it because they wouldn't release it without the fix.
I LOVED the bike, don't get me wrong. I just don't trust them like I do the Japanese bikes - which admittedly have their own problems and recalls. But I have never had an issue with any Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, or Yamaha.. Yet.
I have a 2017 and haven't had any problems yet
Hopefully mine was just a fluke. I don't wish problems on any rider, or manufacturer for that matter. Stay safe!
knox2613 dude I had the same thing happened to my street twin right below 800 miles on it. I got 2017 brand new. I need day it just threw me off while I was on freeway at 70 mph. Suddenly all speedometer and cluster went off, and within 30 sec engine shut off at 70 mph on he middle of crazy feeway 101. I got stranded for 3 hours to get it out to dealer.
The issue initially started with speedometer stopped updating
They did the same as yours. Changed all the harness and took full 4 weeks. It sucked big time. Since then I have no problem. So I can't necessarily count that as negative point as any electrical or electronics could fail in any equipment.
But I was very disappointed by the delaer and triumph for this incident. I didn't even get any loaner. It was very inconvenient.
I have a 2017 HarleyD LowRiderS, that I plan to put into a Bubble, and let it gain value.
This Triumph would make a great Everyday Rider, Weekend Fun Bike. Plus it has character, that you would be proud to look back at, and with the avail Vance & Hines Slip-on's this bike will sound even better. That 280 Crank really sound good.
A 900CC bike is not a First bike,lol!!!..... Has as much torque as some liter 4cyls....Also it is not bare bones at all, Has TCC and ABS standard. Not in the same class at all as a Rebel or any other "beginner bike". The street twin is Great multi use do anything bike. Best bang for your dollar. Selling it as a beginner bike will push away the appropriate market. Just thoughts.....

With the right body parts and exhaust you can make that bike into a killer flat tracker

Good video as always. I like this bike. I am looking for something to ride once or twice a week for local and country rides. Do you always use the clutch to progress through the box? I never do, only on the down shifts. Nice bike and great value.
while I agree with him that it's a very easy Motorcycle to handle, in a way it could also be your first big Bike but not unless you have some experience riding a big motorcycle at least in an MSF course or whatever. I once had a 2013 honda CB500F and just recently got one of these. this Street Twin feels 10x better and more friendly than my once was cb500f. It's practically a cruiser disguised as a standard motorcycle. the center of gravity is super low even with a full tank of gas, slow speed maneuvering is much much better. I have the 55hp version like this one and it doesn't feel like a 55hp but more and that's because the torque of this thing is at peak at just 3,000rpm.
if you ride a honda rebel or a cb500f for just a few kilometers and then jump on this thing, rest assured you will find yourself very comfortable and not nervous at all about handling its 900cc motor.
I’m 6’ tall 175 lb. I love mine,I live in the northern Va. blue ridge mountains ,it is everything I need and more.I have a 20 mile loop I jump on and take literally every time I have 30min to kill at least once a day ,and take 100 mile trips through the mountains at least twice a week(I’m retired).i’ve had 4 or 5 bikes in the past 30 yrs.and i would recommend this bike for anyone,fun bike.It’s really not bad at all but the seat could be just a little thicker ,on long rides I wear a padded undergarment and it’s fine.

Hey there, I live in an Indian city (weather is hot and traffic is a nightmare). I wanted something to just zap through the lights and the occasional highway run (150kms one way). Would you recommend this bike to me? I am a beginner rider.

No like it literally doesn’t have an RPM gauge but it has a digital tach.
Prashant T Only the 2019 & newer Street twins have that: 2016,17, & 18s (like this one) don’t have a tachometer, digital or otherwise. Still haven’t ever heard anyone call a tach an “rpm gauge”, just as no-one calls a speedometer a “mph (or kph) gauge”, or an odometer a “miles/kilometers traveled gauge”... The Street Cup (essentially the same bike) did have two separate instruments (or gauges, if you insist...) a speedometer and tachometer, so perhaps there is a hook-up for an analog tach in the wiring loom on the 2016-18 Street Twins, which would be nice for those of us that want to add a tach to our Street Twins.

As far as tachometer vs. RPM gauge, this is a battle of semantics as they both refer to the same thing. RPM gauge is synonymous to a tachometer. You may have never heard of RPM gauge as in your area it may not be used but it is most certainly used. Don’t have to take my word for it, Wikipedia’s definition of tachometer lists it’s synonyms as : “A tachometer (revolution-counter, tach, rev-counter, RPM gauge)...”

Had a bad history with Triumphs....leaks, leaks and more leaks. Hope they fixed that with the newer gens which I admit, haven't tried.
yet to hear of any modern Triumph leaking oil, that was the first thing they fixed when they relaunched the brand with the 1200 Trophy (that seems like a lifetime ago) - the relaunched Bonnies didn't rear their heads until they had 6 years experience under their belt

That's a moped mate. This is a good first time 'proper bike', perhaps. Let's be honest. All the speed freaks and racer boys and girls won't want this, so it's not going to be their entry level (maybe a Ninja 250/400 or similar). Or if more inclined to classic touring, the GPZ/ER500 (forget the modern version) would have been entry level for that.
However it is perfect for those with shorter legs, or those that don't want a stretched leg experience, but want something with a bit of relaxed grunt.
I dunno what comes after this, if this is entry level. This is the perfect bike for some. ;)

Ok so this isn't a beginner bike like the rebel. This is much much better. It's friendly enough to manage and grow into. It's also very high quality. For the money it's amazing. True comparison is the rebel 500 vs Vulcan S. Of those two I would take the Vulcan.
Have you reviewed the T120? For an experienced rider I wonder if it is worth the difference?

about 115mph , but you wouldnt wont to go there .. its all about the midrange torque , it carries the weight nice and low. I'm 59 now and bought mine 2 years ago as i dont go too fast anymore , but I love pushing this hard through corners. I replace the rear shocks with Hagons , its a must do.
Perfect, thanks. Yeah I'm almost 52 and not interested in going fast but if it will do the ton that's all I care about. The main reason I want a Street Twin is because it's one of the prettiest bikes around. As for the shocks, yeah I would definitely got with an upgrade.

its not really about top speed, once you ride one you'll understand, it encourages you to just chug around enjoying the ride - for instance you can ride around town at speeds between 10 -40 mph in 3rd gear and never have to use the clutch or brakes, just twist the throttle and it goes, out on the open road just look around the corner where you want to go and the bike will do the rest at any legal speed

Sony HDR-AS300 faces me, helmet cam is FDR-X3000. Hand held shots were done with an iPhone 7 Plus and most recent vids are now shot with Samsung Galaxy S9.

This bike is an entry level motorcycle because its 900cc engine only makes 54 horsepower. Chooch mentions how much smooth power is on tap while cruising at 50 mph. Take it out on the interstate and you will find that at 70 mph, there isn't much left. Chooch sounds like a bike salesman. He barely mentions that the front brake is a little weak and you have to allow extra room when stopping. I didn't expect him to mention that Triumph purposely crippled the camshaft to avoid competition with the 1200cc Bonnies. Install an aftermarket camshaft and you can boost the power from 54 bhp up to 70 or so, which is where a 900cc bike should be. The digital tachometer, which Gooch was unable to find, is still no substitute for a good analog tach. Finally, comments like "spend just a little bit more" and "you get what you pay for" are misleading. For a starter bike, the $7,000 Suzuki SV650 or Yamaha FZ-07 are better choices when you take into account the 43% price premium of the $10,000 Street Twin. Does the Triumph look great? You bet. But it's not $3,000 better looking than the Suzuki or Yamaha. BTW, if you want a better sound, replace the stock Triumph mufflers with an aftermarket set from TEC. They look better, sound better and come with inserts that reproduce the stock note. You can slip them in before your test or inspection and then take them back out when you get home. In the end, I would choose the Triumph Street Twin if I could buy a new one for $7,500 and then I would swap out the camshaft and mufflers and add an analog tachometer, all in for $8,500. That would be a great starter bike. This one is not.
Actually it makes 65 hp from 2019. Replacing the camshaft is great too. But first the x-pipe. A lot cheaper than replacing the mufflers.

What the hell is meant by "entry level".
That someone who is just starting out would be able to with some discipline handle this bike as a first. It's not a liter crotch rocket that would be overwhelming.

If you had to choose between this bike and the Moto Guzzi V7 III Racer, which one would you choose and why?
Street Twin all day. The Guzzis are vibey unrefined and raw. I've not ridden a single guzzi I'd spend my money on and I've ridden them all.
MotoChooch I would love to see a V7 III Racer review! Especially if you could get ahold of the newer ones with upgraded suspension and brakes.

The bike will struggle around 75-80 into a strong Texas wind.
This is a bike for people who do not hold 80mph into a headwind.After 42 years riding I can say that on an unfaired bike ,sitting up and with wide handlebars(western bars as Triumph called them) I would not even try.Which is why I am buying one.

Entry friendly! 900cc doesn’t mean as much on a cruiser as it does a sport/super sport. My first bike was a Vulcan 900 Custom and it was very slow.

I heard one of these in person and can tell you that none of the mics of heard on here come remotely close to capturing the true essence of the exhaust. Has to be heard in person.
