I checked the resonator kit on the website and the 4th photo from the left, showing the body where the neck goes, had flaws on on both sides of it. It looks like pieces of the veneer was ripped out and subsequently patched, with wood putty maybe. If I were to order this kit with flaws like that, I would have to return it. It would be okay if you were planning on painting it a solid color or maybe doing a burst finish. I would love to build this kit guitar. At least photograph a model for the website without any flaws in the workmanship.
👍👍Great work Michael, this looks and sounds like a great resonator. I'd consider one myself but the shipping costs to Australia are close to what the kit costs by itself 😒 Two humble suggestions for your next build from a part-time woodworker. Firstly, consider using traditional hide glue for the neck joint. It was used pretty much exclusively in musical instruments up until around the middle of the last century, is plenty strong, and has the advantage of being reversible. If the neck ever needs resetting it can be steamed out, cleaned up and reglued without any risk of damage to the underlying wood. Secondly Linseed oil (pure or boiled) is a polymerising oil and will eventually form a plastic-like layer which can really gum up a guitar fretboard and be a real pain to clean out. Not saying this will happen to this guitar but it will definitely build up over time if you oil it regularly. I've used Fret Doctor for all my guitar fingerboards over the last 25 years, but any good vegetable oil mix would work. (I have no association with Fret Doctor, just a happy customer). I've been buying guitars from these folks for a while. They do make good kits. Currently I'm doing the 'mystery grabbag' and seeing what I get, which has been fun. I did look at the resonators earlier today and saw that they were all sold out. Gee, I wonder why? 🙂 I like the option of putting both pickups in. I'd been thinking of a toggle, but the blender is a better approach.
Yes they are nice kits. The mystery grabbag sounds interesting. I hope they get the resonators back in soon. I use the 3 way toggle on my SwampCaster and Swamp Dawg cigar box guitar builds, but thought the blender would look better on the Reso. M~
Great project, like the stain color. I wasn't sure how well the volume level of the under saddle (rod style) piezo would blend with the volume from the humbucker. I tried it once and the piezo was weak compared to magnetic PU. Glad you proved it worked well. Well done!
I like the sound with the mini HB the best - weii, I also like the acoustic sound, but I just don't care for piezos, though I get the utility. Interesting video; thank you for taking the time to make it.
That’s a nice kit! It looks and sounds great! I looked at their website. They have some reasonably priced kits, with lots of options! Thanks for sharing!
I have a dream build in my head, where I would use dual stacked push pull pots, so I would have volume and tone in one pot. In my head it would be a piezo, and 2 humbuckers, so 3 push pull dual stacked and 1 blend pot. The third push pull would be to turn the pre-amp on or off for the piezo, and the other two for splitting the humbuckers.
Mad scientist sh t!! Very ambitious my Brother!! I'm building (Bean Can Basses) using piezo disks.Like a mini washtub bass. I'm using flexible 3D printer filament for a string. Top that Buddy!!🤨🤘🤠🤘
@Keith-rk4td semi hollow, neck through, carved top and back, with the setup I described. Baritone length using Ironwood (Hophorn Beam) for the central block of the neck/body, and an Ironwood fretboard 27 fanned frets, 28" scale. I have a few other ideas I am working on where you can both tap and split a pickup coil with treble bleed wired in on 1 m pots.
I have an electric guitar w/two push pull pots. It works well for the individual pickups, but doesn’t work in the middle position of the selector switch. Maybe I did something wrong. Good luck
Hi Michael, the mini humbucker looks great without the pickup ring. Vibeworks state that it's one of their more difficult kits; how difficult was it to build?
Thanks Geoff. It wasn't difficult at all, really, you do have to glue the neck in place and I cut the pickup hole and drill the holes for the volume, tone and blender knob. Pretty easy peasy. M~
Nice kit, but the shipping cost to Scotland kills it for me. I maybe just use your wiring diagram and add a piezo rod and humbucker to my current cheap pawn shop resonator.
I had the same idea, hooking it up with the piezo and the hb pups, but with a 3 way toggle switch. A blender knob sounds interesting, would that be better than a 3 way switch? Or can a toggle switch be used between a piezo and a hb pup? IDK? Electronics is not my specialty!
@@SouthernFireGuitars I checked out the link for the blender pot. I have it bookmarked, because I may want to try it out. The blender pot is similar to that of a mixing board.
Yes, just remove the cone cover, gives you access to the saddle, and you don't have to remove the tail piece. The cover slides out once you remove all the little screws. 😎
Thats a nice guitar kit build ,Mike! Check out my New Tigator guitar on my channel! It has Fender,Deluxe Drive tele pickups , n has twang fa days! Keep dem strings singin ,Mike!

@jameslanclos568 I agree.
Micheal, well done, nice Resonator, I would like to see you do the adjustments on the action. Keep em coming!
I have always applied stain with a cloth. Rub on method, no mess.
That looks like a fun kit to build. I have seen guitars and basses with pizeo saddle pick ups than can be blended with the other pick ups too.
Thanks, It was :)
Thanks you make it look to easy sounds great and looks even better
Thanks Tom. M~
Look and sound great!
Love how the piezo sounds like a resonator. Love the humbucker sound too. Giving this serious thought.
Thanks Ross. M~

I dig the MinWax stain, I use the same shade myself.
I like that color, I used to finish farmhouse tables with it. M~

You could use a 3 way toggle switch as well. I thought the knob would look better, either way it's cool. :)
@@SouthernFireGuitars The blender knob really got my attention! It's new to me. Thanks.

No preamp needed for the piezo??
Pretty much used what was in the kit.
