I completely agree with you, I watched this movie and when I got to the end I kept saying “This isn’t right, the Riddler may have been the one behind everything but he wasn’t Hush, he was Tommy Eliot!”

Yeah it's pretty stupid how they only did this for pure shock value, Hush's identity as Thomas Elliott wasn't just shock value it was actually a Arc of betrayal as well, if anything this whole graphic novel is more about the concept of betrayal and trust rather than just some mystery. Mystery isn't only the element, but betrayal was the main theme pretty much, the Elliot reveal was obvious in the original, the original also kind of hurt us to know that a childhood friend of Batman's would also be out to hurt him. It's about the people closest to him that could easily turn, just not only goes for Elliot, but Selena and other's as well, the graphic novel was about Batman's arc of trust, wasn't just some mystery man behind the mask bullcrap.
And the people who made the film totally failed to understand that.

Great catch on the theme and narrative structure in the comic. A lot of these execs think we only want twists or new stuff so they change source material to surprise the original fans when all it does is piss us off

My thought exactly! Very well said. They cut the very heart out of the story.
That’s just how it is now. Even already established stories and characters are being sacrificed for the sake of subversion.

The Twist killed off two great character that could be used in more great stories. Beyond that it ruined the movie because it no longer shows how clever or malicious Hush is as a character. Hush's plan is brilliant but only if it's Elliot's plan... Why? Because the first step is injuring Batman bad enough to force him to go to a specialist like Elliot and reveal his identity, but instead we get some half baked line about the Lazarus pit giving Riddler ultimate knowledge or some bull making that part of the plan, the sustained injury ultimately, and ultimately the first third of the movie pointless.

  • @DarkCloudIceX

They tried to pull out what they did (successfully) in Batman Gaslight: in the comics, Jack the Ripper is Bruce's uncle. It was obvious, he was the only one who didn't had a canon counterpart.
But they played fair on that movie: they erased the uncle altogether and placed on the story characters that weren't there originally, expanding on the cast. It was built on a mystery you as the audience had to solve, suspecting LITERALLY EVERYONE because all of them had core traits that turned them into suspects from the get go: Hugo Strange, Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, Bullock, Catwoman, Alfred, even Bruce Wayne himself. It was thrilling and the reveal was satisfying even for those who guessed it. It didn't follow the comics and it was a good thing.
But the problem is: Hush makes the fundamental mistake of contradicting itself in order for the twist to happen. It was ridiculous.

Even if they wanted to change Hush's identity to one of Batman's more popular rogues, Riddler is probably the worst choice. He's probably the Bat-rogue who is the least physical threat to Batman Barman and a straight-up fist fight finale does nothing for his character

Plot stuff aside, I'm getting very bored with the visual blandness of these WB Batman movies. Occasionally they're entertaining enough to distract from the lack of visual style, but in general they're just stripping the source material of a large portion of what makes them unique in the first place.
It's really apparent in the animated Hush. The comic looks futuristic and bright and vibrant. The movie looks like a cut and paste of the generic Gotham they use in most of these. I'm not really sure what it is they're going for other than maybe a basic template for which to shoehorn all these unrelated comic storylines into a single animated "universe".

I have no issue with Hush being Riddler in the animated movie. I actually LOVED IT, dude is always made fun of and never taken seriously by other villains and stuff, obviously hes no Kite Man in regards to his respect. but from the top villains of Batmans, he gets the least respect. Him punking all the villains and scaring them into doing his work was great and satisfying.
BUT! What I hated was him after the reveal, he went back to being stupid and comical, especially the Question Mark on his head. I was hoping he was smart, calculating, and a terrifying force the whole way and the only way to stop him was for Catwoman to Kill him or they both get killed.
Also Riddler has only been gaining respect by writers within the recent years, because they've pretty much squeezed dry all the other villains and their own creativity. Now its all, LETS MAKE THE RIDDLER A FORCE TO BE RECKON WITH. I love it I do. but when it comes to animated and films. Riddler hasnt had that yet, until now... Though I think they botched it in the end

This is definitely an unpopular opinion, but to me Hush is easily the most overrated Batman story ever written. So this movie was never for me. But what I can say is that at least this film operates as an actual mystery story, which the comic fails miserably at. It’s so strange that it’s often hailed as this great epic Batman mystery when Batman doesn’t actually solve anything; he doesn’t figure anything out by the end of the story. It all just comes out to him in dialogue. There’s a lot of other stuff in that story that I think has aged really poorly, but that would take ages. But overall, I guess I feel bad for the people that wanted a straight adaptation of the book. Again, it was never for me because I don’t like the book now as I’ve gotten older.

Batman: Hush the comic is convoluted nonsense. Throwing every big Batman villain, a Superman fight and Catwoman romance, does not automatically make it a great Bat-book (see Tom King's run). All those fans that complain today's comic writers nerf established villains to legitimize their new ones can blame this book for galvanizing that trend. The "twists" in Hush manage to be both ridiculous and predictable, in an attempt to make 'Hush' happen, which let's be honest, he didn't after this story aside from bit parts or side stories. R.IP. did this type of "breaking Batman psychologically" story better. "Court of Owls" did a better job of introducing new villains with staying power. I'll never understand why folks love this book or this character.

The defense of if you want the same thing as the book good read the book is horseshit. most of the best animated adaptation come directly from the books. I hate to break it to the no name writers that make these movies but they cant just magically come up with a better idea that one of the most iconic and best selling comics of all time. Just like the addition of batman smashing batgirl in killing joke it just proves they arent as good of writes as the originals
Not to mention people have no problems with good change. They changed the tower of bable story and its still had the key elements vital to the story.
To make a long story short. The removed the character the movie and comic are named after and people payed money and gave to see.

Dude I agree with your opinions, and alright video sure, but you barely said anything, you just went on for 10 minutes about twists in other films saying take 'the usual suspects', take 'vertigo', take 'get out'. The arkham knight and under the red hood comparison wasn't even t he same thing, you just used another example of the same thing for the same reason, its absolutely infuriating. You can just lay out what you think a good twist is without half a dozen examples for each bullet point it only serves to extend the runtime. Not only that but you say spoilers for Hush at the beginning, but then two seconds after introducing any one of two dozen other films, you give away the main twist. I've not seen Unusual suspects. I want to at some point, but now the impact of that twist will be lost becasue you didn't feel secure enough to explain your point with just vertigo, you needed to go into repeat the same points with another movie, making no more interesting comments. I couldn't imagine how annoyed I'd be if I had Shutter Island spoiled (that film is so good, and the twist makes it what it is) but you 100% worsened the experience of that film for someone. Use two movies to compare Hush to. One to analyse how twists were done in the past, one for how they're done today. Explain why this change happened, and how Hush failed to heed these lessons. I haven't seen any of your other reviews or video essays or whatever and I won't becasue I don't want the entire plethora of western media spoiled for me at record pace. I can't remember feeling this enfuriated at a review ever, especially not one I agree with. I hope you've learned since making this, or I hope you can, becasue if they're all like this, your videos are what's wrong with review culture. Insecurity, insubstantial points, ruining better films for many people. Learn.
