Jakob Ingebrigtsen. If you haven't heard of him yet, you certainly will over the next few years. From 2017 - 2019, Ingebrigtsen has been a rising star in the sport of Track & Field, and after 2 years of climbing the ladder of greatness, he's now established himself as one of the world's best.
In 2019, he was ranked 8th in the 5,000 meters and 2nd in the 1500. I personally believe he should have been ranked higher given that he was extremely consistent throughout his season. Regardless, he went into the 2019 World Championships with hopes for winning a medal, and becoming one of the youngest champions in track and field history.
His story is undeniably fascinating, but what does his future look like? Will he break multiple world records? Will he be the Olympic or World champion? Or will he ultimately never realize his championship potential? Leave a comment with your thoughts down below!

Actually he didn’t start training seriously as a runner until he was 10. His father does that with his sons and had them ski as children so when they get into running they have a solid foundation of fitness without much risk of burning out

Maybe it's because after running 7 in the mile (i know it's no incredible time but it's only been 6 months of training since being fat) my heart rate just doesn't go up much since my rhr is at~60 but idk.

His Hytteplanmila performance, 27:54, was just insane. This puts him only 10 seconds behind Mo Farah's fastest 10k road run. The European U20 record at the 10k prior to this race was Julien Wanders with 28:49. And the fastest non-African U20 runner prior to this race was Ryuji Ono with 27:59.32, and that was on the TRACK (which is faster than road).

Time to revisit the Jakob story TRP! A comprehensive walkthrough of his background. He had awesom XC races, besides track.as well
Norway produces an incredible amount of elite endurance athletes, primarily in cross country skiing. So, it's no stretch to see that translate into running. I'm looking forward to following his journey.
He is very talented but with the likes of Selemon Berega around World and Olympic titles will be very hard to win these guys are also very young.

This teenager is already a legend. Double european champion as a 17 year old and 16 year old running a 3:56.2 mile is beyond human capability. In his tv program he was tested as a 11 year old to have a 69 Vo2max which I believe is a world record at that age.

He reminds me so much like Jim Ryun. Except that he's getting to do what Jim couldn't. Ryun ran on dirt and cinders, had leather spikes, and horrible diet/training(I swear there was some interview he did where he briefly mentions he drank coke/soda lol). Ryun didn't have the best olympic success due to being unused to high altitude(Mexico 68), and he was tripped in the heats and not reinstated (Munich 72).
However he did have a much slower 5K, and a much faster 800m, since he held the WR in the 880y/800m(1:44.9/1:44.3). Interesting to note that both Ryun and Ingebrigtsen have the EXACT same mile pb of 3:51.3, both ran at just 19 years old.
I kinda see Jakob as carrying the torch that Ryun left. I want him to succeed and get those medals in 2021.

That's because Ryun was an 800/1500 type whereas Jakob is a 1500/5000 type. But it could somewhat be attributed to their training since Ryun did insane things like 20 x 400 as a high schooler.
Also, drinking soda isn't some horrible thing. I'm sure he cleaned up his diet as he got older, but most Olympians drink beer or have some sort of snack everyday. Most top athletes just eat a lot more and a lot better than the average person. So a Coke or piece of dark chocolate accounts for a far smaller percentage of his diet than you or me.

You can overcome natural talent, you can overcome ability, but you can't overcome someone willing to work harder than you. If he's willing to run until he falls over the line, he's going to be one hell of a force to be reckoned with.

Kenyan's are absolutely incredible distance runners and usually unbeatable so it's fun to see someone from another country give them bit of competition and specially as he's still very young.

@@mikeb4471 That's dumb as hell. First of all, track doesn't begin and end with the US. And I say that as an American. The US is falling behind, sure. But there were areas we were never that strong in or haven't been in a long time. Second, the game is far different with the East Africans. Doping is so easy to do there and testing is so limited that they all have a cloud of doubt, fair or not. Third, Jakob has been training like a pro since he was like 13. There's no way any American could do that unless they were homeschooled or something. Jakob is talented for sure. But it's folly to act like he's had a standard upbringing when it has been fairly far from it

@@melvillefletcher4332 We expect the Ethiopians to produce amazing distance runners because they live in a society where it's often necessary to run several kilometres to get to and from school, they have the benefit of fresh alpine air and typically have the genetics to match so I suppose it is more exciting when a European teenager shows the same potential.

@@GunsNRoses1123 He is. I truly believe Gjert wants the best for his boys, but i think it gets pretty intense for them. Even at a young age. I trained Henrik and Filip in our summer football school camp in Sandnes (our home town). Gjert would often show up and ask how they did, and if they were "above average" in the group. I think they were 10-12 when they were in my group, Henrik first, then Filip some years later (Filip was a wizard with juggling the football btw). And we were supposed to just have a fun camp with football. Gjert was the only parent who pushed the question about how "good" they were compared to the other kids.
Me: I'm going to be just like him. I just need to increase my mileage, speed work, and dedication.

Jakob is talked about a lot since he actually holds like a gigantic amount of junior world records. Barega holds none. That said for 5 and above Barega is clearly better.

Beware of burn out for Jakob and his brothers. One of the older brothers has already quit sports. Apparently the Father of the Ingebrigtsen's has been pushing these boys very hard every since they were quite young. I would not be surprised to see more of them drop out too.

Moving olympics to next year can help Jakob to achieve even more i think. This year had propably been too soon to do big things. If this runner doesn't get injured, he will achieve a lot. Even thought long distance running is one of the hardest sports to stay in the top; one where athletes are most vulnerable for injuries. There are so many talented athletes coming up all the time, and injuries have ruined biggest races from many. I hope Jakob stays healthy and on the track! I would love to see a norwegian to run greatly in the olympics. And this comes from a finn. Ps. we (Finland) are still the most succesfull country in the whole history of long distance running compared to our population, even nowadays we suck...

I can't see him dominating or being successful in the 5000m unless it's for europeans. But certainly could be the main man in the 1500m
I beg to differ. In one of his first 5000m races last year he ran a very fast 13:02 making it look easy and with a 55 second last lap. He lots of room to improve in terms of his aerobic capacity and in general, is more aerobically strong than most of the top 1500m runners. Unless the Kenyans and Ethiopians get it first, I could see Jakob challenging the 5k world record years down the line

Sooo they are three brothers at approximately same lvl (+ they have a little Sister that seems to be getting really good atm)
So yeah, pretty good genetics (they also have a Norwegian reality show that follow the whole family for those especially interested)
I think the fact that they have been extremely dedicated from a young age with their father as a trainer is a bigger factor. Their father is a very talented and tough trainer, almost too tough but it obviously worked

I love Jacob and almost started crying when he crashed at the end of the 5,000, but he showed so much guts and grit. His attitude and defiance kind of reminds me of Steve Prefontaine back in the day, who unfortunately died too young to realize his true potential. What concerned me about Jacob, is that he ran the 5,000 at all and I wonder if his father pushed him. I always worry when parents are also the coach. Whether in entertainment or sports over-aggressive parents can be the ruin of talented kids. I think if he would have just run the 1500 he would have gotten the silver. At any rate, his future potential is unlimited :)
Keep in mind that Sebastian Coe was coached by his father. That turned out rather well.

@Ll L thats typical but not always accurate. We had a kid who was still 17 when he graduated and another kid who was almost 19 his senior year. I think his birthday fell like 2 weeks after graduation. Point is that there are 17-19 year old seniors that exist and neither of these kids i mentioned were never held back or skipped any grades.

I'm not worried for the future. He WILL become the long-distance's next superstar AND the world champion! What he has accomplished so far is exceptional. He'll be a kickass!
