Adding to my Watch Later, because I’m at work right now. Out of over 200 hundred channels I follow, yours is one of the handful I allow to notify me. Love the channel, Claude!
Just got out of hospital for POTS related escapades and your videos have provided no end of comfort. I am revisiting your sewing with a disability videos and using those steps on my everyday life as I'm also to Ill to Sew. First steps to accepting I'm disabled and you have helped me to get there. I have so much love in my heart for you and so many thanks for continuing to share your work in different ways xx
Honestly, Claude, THANK YOU for showing us costuming with affordable materials! I also cannot afford wool, and had completely written off the idea of trying any historical costuming because I just can't afford linen and wool. It just sometimes feels inaccessible unless you have hundreds of $$ (or pounds, I am in the US) to drop on fabric. Maybe I will rethink that decision though, after watching this video!
There's such a focus on 'accuracy' but we can't get anywhere near the quality and variety of fabrics they could in the past! Just because something is an accurate fibre doesn't mean it was exactly the type of fabric they would have used. So use what you can afford, or have in stash and make something that looks the part and feels spectacular!
A suggestion from north of the border - check out Value Village on the regular. They have a fabric section, as well as the sheets and coverlets. I once found wool. Lots. And Lots. Of Wool. It is possible... But, given the restrictions, I try and find a fabric I like that seems to have the same degree of weight and drape of the "official" linen and wool. If you want to splurge, pick up a cotton lining for a small quilt - I use it to make shoulder pads and such. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
this looks really good! I love the trims you used. seeing you take on a project like this is so inspiring, both from the use of almost entirely stash, the historical but not needing to be accurate perspective, and the sewing with disability. You are inspiring me to go digging through my stash and do some sewing at a pace my long covid can handle 😄💕
I have been binge watching the older videos. I love your videos because you are open and honest. I can relate to many issues you encounter. I don't have a huge yarn stash, but I do need to work up what I have that isn't project dedicated. As a result I'm knitting beanie hats for charity with yarn I had no idea what else to use for... So one old yarn project completed allows me to start a new yarn project, lol.
I'm commenting for the algorithm but also to let you know that It's actually really nice to have these longer compilation videos playing in the background as I'm doing chores.
I like how it turned out in the end. It's great that you can be honest and critical about it, and still be proud of what you accomplished. The design drawings you were showing are very nice. Have you done any drawing for more artistic purposes?
I watched this as I worked on an Edwardian walking skirt that I only had a week to make.We got a last minute invitation to a 1906 themed event. I thought my old Edwardian suit was going to fit and didn't bother to try it on until a couple of days ago. So I had to draft a pattern and sew a skirt. Of course, I over compensated and made it too big ( and long too! ).
These compilations make a nice accompaniment to my knitting - I used to do the same with the individual videos. 😅 And it's nice to see how a project comes together. I liked your clever solutions for the dress when I saw it the first time, and I think I like it even more the second time around! The underarm issue is relatable. I made a self-drafted blouse somewhat like this from a vintage fabric that I had a limited amount of (so I feared cutting anything more complex out of it - much like this project, too), and I have the same problem there... I think underarm gussets are indeed the way to go.
You know, it might not be period accurate but it looks great on you! And it's fun to see how much someone can accomplish with so little money and time just in comparison to all the perfectly-sewn-in-expensive-fabric projects around.
I am so pleased you had fun. Even as an extreme novice compared to you, I have had to meet deadlines similarly, with similar constraints. But to say you had fun is no understatement!!! I am proud of you and your accomplishments. 💚💚💚
This dress was quite the journey ! Proud of you that you got it done & on such a tiny budget. I know your not 100 % happy with it, but I think it looks very good on, and it is comfortable, so that is a major plus for me !
I am shocked that you didn't make a corset bc I've only seen the dress, not watched this vid, and id always thought it was extremely fitted and smooth!
It's so wonderful to watch this again. I hope the algorithm loves it and spreads the word about your awesome combination of historic, modern, achievable and accessible. Quick question: does playback speed affect how the algorithm behaves? I often watch on 1.25 as weirdly it helps my brain focus but don't want it to affect you. Thanks 😊 P.s. second question (I'm aware how annoying people suggesting careers is when it's your energy stopping you not your desire) Would you ever consider doing paid e consults to help people stuck with fit issues? A little like what you do for Engineering knits. Obviously at a price that would make it worth it and a shorter time.
That is brilliant... {Consider this, oh Algorithmic Gods, both the old and the AI, my interactive tribute} - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
As a fellow scoliosis sufferer, I really appreciate seeing what you do to account for your spine curvatures as it gives me somewhere to start when I run into for issues
Loved this one! The more video editing one does, the more critical one becomes of the filming, but it is all good in the end!! Thanks for sharing! You remain an inspiration to me through my own hilly journey.
I think that's part of my issue. I was a bit embarrassed to reshare some of my earlier videos because I've gotten so much better over the years! But the information in them is still good and hopefully people will enjoy them still! 💚
I get wrapped up in all the reasons why quick projects won't work and convince myself that 6 months is already too late. You remind me to just do it and while it might not be perfect it'll still be cute and the next time will be better!
I really appreciate how dedicated you had to be to your budget - it seems to be a forgotten reality sometimes that not everyone can afford to splash out on wonderful and expensive materials
When you point out the issues with the dress, I totally see them and agree that the thing could be improved. But also in the next second I see very lovely dress that is so cute❤️
Oh, I'm making a top with that exact brown viscose. I bought it because of your mentioning of it in this video first time you posted it. I like how out feels. Your dress is looking great! Despite all the things - definitely more than ok 😃
These compilations are nice for watching while working on something like darning the dog bed he keeps putting holes in… it’s nice to see your big projects again that I havnt seen in awhile and not take my full focus off what I’m working on.
I'm presently attempting to teach myself how to tat. And I may have a lace-making pillow on the way from the UK... I figure any wonky thing I produce just might be nicer than the polyester stuff... The dress is absolutely Stunning (psst - stop fussing, it's beautiful). Well done. Hope you had a lovely time. The compilations are wonderful. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Loved how the skirt turned out! I would love to see you attempt this style again with time on your side. I think you were really on to something with the reinforcement in the skirt without a corset. It looked lovely! I think the blouse did just need more gathers in the front to pull it forward, but this blouse just looked like a modern take! Wonderful!
Using what you have? Period! Keeping the budget? Period! Piecing is period and there’s an absence of it entirely…except if we call those last bits of velvet “pieces” 🤷🏻♀️? Period! See! You had all manner of period accuracy going on ❤
I enjoyed this video enormously, and I like the finished project! But then I am Edwardian history bounding today so I may just be disproportionately forgiving of how historically accurate something needs to be.
I like this project and I think that the weights on that dress looks amazing. I understand some of the issues that you had with it as I recently seen another dress with more of the pigeon breast construction in the front but I think it overall looks really nice and I like the vibe - it’s soft and gentle looking and comfortable and not too much froufrou. The velvet and lace though are a pretty touch.
I learn so much from your videos! Every challenge for you means a piece of wisdom for me, thank you for sharing all of your challenges and solutions! Both of these turned out great!
The fabric covered buttons are for linen pillowcases and duvet covers. not for lingerie. lingerie buttons are half the size of the ones you have there.
It would seem that you need some free help from someone who could half drape, half draft a master pattern (or how many time periods that you are interested in making clothing from) plan for you from your underbust to mid-thigh . Granted, I completely understand some of what you're going through health wise as I have my own shit show of chronic illnesses and chronic pain.

It's great to watch these projects again!

This is such a great idea to compile these videos. Also, you look so elegant sitting in the sun wearing your slip 😀
I love that shot! It's got my wishing for warmer weather!
@@RetroClaude warmer weather is on its way. We just have to make it through February first...

That gathering trick of using pins changed the game for me! I love these budget-sewing compilations! Thank you for sharing ❤
The growing panic is palpable. I was all tied up in knots by the end! Gulp!
Love the green dress you are wearing.
Thank you!

I am shocked that you didn't make a corset bc I've only seen the dress, not watched this vid, and id always thought it was extremely fitted and smooth!
Haha! Excellent! I'm so pleased you said that! It means my plan worked!
I still really like the general look of this dress (and I'm weak for black velvet lol) but the slip is what gives me massive envy.
