- With a week to spare before I went to the Prior Attire Ball in Bath I decided to make myself a day dress. As someone who lives with multiple disabilities and has to carefully pace their energy......

Quite honestly, I am in awe with how much work you got done in such a short amount of time. Not only did you pull it together quickly, but it looks so beautiful! Amazing job and always great to have another Claude video to watch!

Kind of funny/silly how we decide to do things like this instead of resting before a big event. Occasionally people say "You're so good at pacing and listening to your body", and I automatically think of all the times like this when I decided I wasn't going to let pre-resting get in the way of what I wanted done before I left 😅
If you don't like the color you might get adventurous and try to dye it. If not maybe sell it so you can take your time making something you like better? I do think it turned out well considering you time crunch, I've never done anything that fast. So congrats on getting to the ball "Cinderella" and being your own fairy godmother too. 😉❤
My secret marking tool for any washable fabric is Crayola Ultra Clean Washable markers. I've used them on cotton, linen, poly-blends, etc, and they always wash out super easily. They even wash out when ironed over.
I am dumbfounded that you do all that amidst bad days and brain fog. Its very sweet fabric and all that preparation certainly paid off. You are such an awesome person, so inspiring, knowledgeable and exceedingly good value to watch!

It seems fitting to be watching you complete an impulse project, while completing an impulse project of my own. I decided I needed tablet woven bands to finish a handwoven waistcoat.
Your high skill level is the sign of a perfectionist and perfectionists are generally very hard on themselves. Lovely job.
The finished outfit is so cute! I love how the shawl matches the bonnet! And, as a Canadian, I'm delighted to see inches and cm both being used depending on which one is more convenient.
I try to use inches for *~historical~* reasons but centimetres will also be second nature to me 😅
@@RetroClaude That makes sense! I prefer Metric for most things, but inches are great for things like measuring to see if furniture will fit somewhere, or making a grid to scale something up. I despise tiny fractions of inches though!

It looks so lovely!!! 😮 Totally beautiful. Also my favourite part was you using "narrow seams" of 1cm - after doing my degree with a manufacturing focus, sewing with a seam allowance larger than 1cm feels like a waste of fabric 😂
For me 1cm of seam allowance is a travesty! How will you alter it? What if it frays? What if in 12 years time this costume has to be used again on a significantly different sized person and there isn't any fabric left? 🤣
@@RetroClaude it's wild how 0.5 more or less in a seam allowance can either save a manufacturer thousands of pounds or enable a garment to be readily altered!

Amazing dresses. And Yes, you don't have to do things like people used to do... specially considering the lack of confort of some of peaces people used to wear. No need for that. Take good care of yourself first. Main thing!!

If you don't love the colour on you it's cotton so you could dye it? I think a tea wash might give it a warm brown/pink/peach colour? (or you could use proper dye and go for any colour you want!)

1st thought: you silly woman how, oh how, will you be able to do all that in one week? Then I remeber that I've promised to make a sponge bob costume for my 6ft2 son for tomorrow and, because he has the car, I have to wait to be able to get the materiels.... hého (no hate please, I love making things for our children).
2nd thought: Shanon of Shanon makes uses a tray she thrifted to put all the equipment and notions she needs for the project she is doing at the time and I've promised myself to help my disorganised self by implementing this, perheps you will get round to it before I can.

I love quilting, but I hate using quilting cotton for clothing, it is just too heavy for most things.
In that amount of time... ooof. It's very pretty in the end and I love how the shawl matches the bonnet. Also, kneepads!

The dress looks so pretty! And I think you look good in pink, however I know it's absolutely not at all important what I, random stranger think, what's important is how you feel in it. I want to make myself summer dress based on pattern for quite similar 1837 day dress and I would like to ask, are those sleeves okay to move around? Or are they annoying? I love the look of them, but I'm a bit hesitant, if they're not comfy I won't even bother.
Oh, and I kinda think you need text info that says 'please don't tell me about rotary cutters, okay, thanks' 😂 I also don't understand people's need to tell everyone that they should use them. (TW: blood) I almost cut out tip of my finger while making a sandwich because my brain kinda lost connection with hand and it bled constantly for hour and a half and people would want me to be close to a spinning blade? Absolutely fucking not.
That was a massive job on a short clock. Nicely done with pulling it off! It's understandable that your can't equally love every thing you make, but personally I do think enjoying the process is more important. Without that, starting up the next thing is a bit of a problem. I rather like how you styled the dress with the accessories, and it makes for a lovely outfit. 🌷 Side note: I loose my tape measure all the time too. I swear it moves on its own, but I really don't want to invoke it being part snake... 🐍😅
I loved the process! I had so much fun despite the tight deadline. If anything that made it even more enjoyable! 😅 I can live with the dress as it is. Maybe one day I'll sell it to a blonde who'll look fabulous in it!
@@RetroClaudeI would argue that with the way you styled it with the lighter tone accessories, having blonde hair would kind of wash out the person. Your darker hair in this case says 'here I am' in a sense, and I think that is important. I don't know if that makes sense, but my opinion on the matter is moot anyways. 🤷

I had to laugh at your comment regarding why you avoid using rotary blades. I have EDS, which mostly affects my joints and muscle strength, but can also induce brain fog and co-ordination issues when I have high-pain days. In addition, because EDS comes from dodgy proteins in your collagen, sometime your skin will not knit together well after an injury.
About six months ago I came home from rehab physio with very weak muscles and feeling quite wobbly, but I was rushing to meet a costume deadline. About 10 minutes after I get home, I forget to move my fingers out of the way of my rotary cutter.
Unfortunately I cut straight through the side of my finger, and even in to the side of the nail bed. For most people this would be a bad cut that would need a bandage for a couple of weeks, but with my EDS I wasn't taking any chances. After wrapping it up tightly in a flannel to stem the bleeding, and tying up that flannel wrap with a scrap of ribbon from my stash, I got back in to my power wheelchair and drove to Urgent Care (which happens to be next door to the physio I just left). 20 minutes later I emerge with a glued finger, steri-strips and AU$90 lighter.
Moral of this story? If you have a dodge body and you are already at less than ideal co-ordination, skip the rotary cutter!

I'm curious what's going on with your hands, only because it looks like something similar is going on with mine. Do you talk about it in another video? Is it an ME thing?
Mine seems to be a Fibromyalgia thing (although I've got the labels of both that and CFS).
For a long time I've had weird involuntary movements like that. Not just my hands but sometimes my whole body. Doctor had no idea what it was and frankly didn't care. But then, I saw involuntary movements on a list of 'M.E. symptoms' online, looked into it a bit more and it turns out it's quite common. Of course there's no information in why it happens or how to manage it but it does seem to be related to M.E.

The list of ME symptoms is quite extensive isn't it! LOL
