I love how you acknowledged the comments ppl left on your last video, even though to me some of them weren't so gentle in delivery. it shows you're a great listener and can put things into perspective for yourself. New fan :)
Hi Alix, I never usually comment on videos, even though I've been watching yours regularly for years. I'm very very happy that you mentioned that you are willing to rethink your approach to fast fashion. Especially in your role as a TH-camr who inspires so many people it would be very refreshing and interesting to see more content on slow(er) fashion pieces and the brands behind them. Excited to see what's coming up! Cheers, Emma
I agree that fast fashion isn't as environmentally friendly or ethical as clothes that are made to be but the latter is so expensive. I'm a student and broke AF so even while I buy "fast fashion" clothing, I only buy what I need and try things on in store. Often I'll think about it for a few days or weeks after to make sure I'm still really into it. All of my clothes from H&M and stores like that are pieces I love and wear again and again. That's how I try to do my part in taking into consideration my consumption as a broke AF student :p
Do you have a local thrift store/charity shop? I know some places do not have good options for buying second-hand items but it's a good budget-friendly way to shop ethically. :)
Ayoo. Student too. I notice when Express, Macy's, or the Gap have sales their stuff is reasonably priced. Sure they might be $10 more but that's not bad since it's like $10 more quality. Also for basics I just buy packs on Amazon.
I used to think so too. Just bought 2 awesome tops for 17 Euros (I live in Germany) from an ethical brand. They are absolutely perfect and will last much longer than the fast fashion ones I used to have while not being much more expensive. Ethical fashion can be affordable, you just have to really want to try it.
it's great to see you actually getting rid of so much stuff! I feel like the low price of fast fashion items often makes me ignore bad fit/ quality and I need to be more selective when in fast fashion stores in order to only buy those perfect pieces. And on the other hand, good quality things are often worth investing a bit more. I feel like if you go shopping with the idea of only going to buy those three must haves, you're gonna end up with a well sorted out, decluttered wardrobe!
I'm not in a position where I can spend $250 on one clothing item. But I've worn my "cheap" clothes for year and they still look absolutely fine. However I feel like a lot of times people make excuses when it comes to cheap clothing, like "the fit isn't perfect but it's on sale for $5, so I might as well buy it". I only buy clothing I'm 100% satisfied with, if there's just one thing that botheres me, I'll leave the store without it.
5BabyAlien5 I totally understand. I used to do the same, but now Im just prioritizing quality over quantity. For the last few years I've gone for a more minimalist wardrobe. I also had to keep telling my family to stop buying me clothes on birthdays and Christmas, because i'd rather buy my own stuff that i'm 100% satisfied with. And to be honest I only spent $250 on a coat once, and it was something I was completely in love with and debated buying it for a year lol. It's my favorite coat of all time though. I don't think i'd do it again unless I find another "favorite coat of all time", which doesnt seem likely at least for a good few years.
The topic of fast fashion v ethical fashion brands is new to me but so interesting! I have been doing a capsule wardrobe for over a year now and it has taught me how much waste I used to have and the benefits of buying only well made (hopefully ethically made with sustainable materials) clothing that I actually need in my wardrobe.
I found the best way to cut down on fast fashion and quick purchases (not that my wardrobe in ANY way is large, seriously...) was to really decided and hone in on what suits my body and what I feel comfortable in and discard ALL items that didn't meet that criteria. I did the same with colour and prints. These days if I see something amazing but know the cut won't suit me or the colour isn't my cup of tea I let it go. I also abide by the one in one out principle a lot of the time.
Very wise thought - "I was in love with the idea of it." That is one of my major flaws also- I see something on someone and it is so PERFECT a look for him/her, that I want it desperately - forgetting the simple fact that I AM NOT that person and I will probably look a fool in it.
I'm currently preparing for a cross-country move so I have been *loving* watching declutter videos lately, yours included! I'm very much like you in that I get sentimental about things and it can be really hard to let certain things go...so the fact that I will have limited packing space for my move is definitely helping, haha. It's a good gut-check too in terms of your buying habits, seeing what you buy too many of, what you've forgotten about, that sort of thing. Anyway, I'd love to see a makeup declutter too, Alex! :)
A little tip to fit the shoes on shelves.... Alternate between putting the heel and the toe in towards the back of the shelves.. Like Left shoe = toe in, right shoe = heel in... They fit so much easier that way...
Some tips that have helped me a lot (I was quite a hoarder of clothes btw) was to avoid any retail stores like the plague, focusing on pieces that will be considered timeless years from now. Also, something that helps is storing away items that are sometimes end up in the "maybe pile" and when you sort through that pile again a couple weeks later, really do pay attention whether or not you cared for the item and if it never crossed your mind or you can't envision that piece into at least 3 outfits, it is time to part. Hope this helps☺💖
So I know that I don't need to throw my 3 cents into the mix but your comment about analysing your consumption of clothes got me thinking. Yes, when I watched your last video I did recoil at the sheer amount of clothes and compare it to my meagre wardrobe in comparison. However, you're a lifestyle and beauty guru. You earn money by testing out and trying the latest trends and people turn to you for style advice and inspiration. Definitely send unused clothes to charity shops and friends but please sit back and think that your large wardrobe is a consequence of your job. A job you're great at. Don't sweat it, hun.
The curated closet would be a good book to read, then you get to know your own true style, and only buy things that you truly love. Fast fashion is like a one night stand, buy long time love :)
I've been looking for a long time for a youtuber to talk about ethical consumption of clothes so I'd definitely be interested in you doing a vid on ethical clothing brands and like how to break away from fast fashion! Great vid by the way, you really inspired me to try and clear out my own wardrobe (it's def time lol 😂)
Marzia has made videos about fast fashion and ethical consumption! Most of her clothing is very unique and bought from slow fashion brands, so you could check her out. :)
GREAT video! I love how simple and minimalistic the rail and the shelf turned out, and I'd really like to see an office redo video! It was also nice to hear you think about the fast fashion-phenomen, not many TH-camrs talk about it. Keep being amazing, Alix! :*
You should do makeup, office and skincare declutter videos if you haven't already :) Love your declutter videos! Also an interesting and informative documentary on fast fashion is "The True Cost". I'd recommend seeing it as it's good food for thought.
Consignment shops are so picky about items they'll take ,making it difficult sometimes to sell stuff. You have stuff with tags on it which they would take in a heartbeat. Perhaps you need to just really think before you buy. Save the money and put it towards a long term goal more worthwhile then another coat you don't need.
The problem is not fast fashion, the problem ist you buy too much stufd you don't need. I am a student and can only afford fast fashion, but I shop only things I really need. I always wait a few weeks to see if I really need something & then I buy it. As long as you don't overconsume, like you do it's pretty much "okay" to buy fast fashion. But some basics should totally be sustainable pieces.
I really enjoy these type of videos from you Alix! I love how your style is so individual-- it's refreshing to see different pieces! I started moving away from fast fashion about a year ago after pretty much exclusively shopping at Forever21 for most of my clothes shopping life. I think it's definitely a process, but it's rewarding to end up with nicer pieces that I love that accumulate over time. :) I'd love to see more style/wardrobe videos in the future!
Thank you for thinking about buying less fast fashion , it's amazing that you talked about it ! I think it's such a shame that most youtubers buy so many clothes all the time to do hauls etc , they get send so much stuff aswell , when you think about it , all the packaging , delivery costs etc etc really adds up.. I think we should all try to minimize our waste and consumption of fast fashion and other products that we don't really need :-)
I'm passionate about clothes and as much as I love something new I like to know that the cost per wear represents good value for money. I like to have some key pieces that see me through most occasions: trench coat, jeans, white shirt, black dresses etc.... I did buy a pink jacket as pink trend seems to be hanging around and am so pleased.
keep going with the topshop studded boots! they hurt me so so much for the first 4/5 wears but after that they are so comfortable! I was ready to give up but they don't stay painful x
If you alternate the way your shoes face you can fit more. For example right shoe face forward left show face backwards. I'm not sure if I am making sense. but it saves space.
YAAAAAAS! Just yesterday I was mentioning your wardrobe clear out to a friend and how inspiring and soooo satistying it was to watch!! Please keep posting more of them! (btw I'm in love with your sense of style)
For me, when I was younger (please understand I'm only 35, I'm referring to late teens/early 20s), I always wanted the "fast fashion" until my mom taught me that you need to think about quality vs quantity. She also said the best "fast fashion" to get accessories, b/c as soon as they go out of style, you are not out of a lot of money. Side Note: I totally get the coat and sweater/jumper thing. I grew up in Western New York state, and it's always cold. When I moved to Atlanta, GA I brought it all with me. I'm slowly going through everything. If it looks old or doesn't fit it goes. Good luck with going quality over quantity. ***PS in the US they have clothing and shoe recycling. They take shoes like the animal print booties with the chewed up heel, and recycle them into something else. It might be something to look up encase the puppy does something like that again.
You should watch "The true cost" if you want to know more about fast fashion and consumerism. It took me six months to purchase an item of clothing after watching it, and it was the only thing I bought since.
I think you are brave to be transparent. What I have found is that people who are extraordinarily critical of women whose “addiction” is fashion usually have a DIFFERENT addiction. It’s not that they are super holy and never do wrong- it’s just not fashion. That being said, I agree, as a fellow fashion lover, that we MUST keep on top of our impulses so we can be sensible and thoughtful in both purchasing and keeping things. But if you really can change and improve your day and emotion and inspire others with fashion, I for one, do not believe it is “pure waste nor pure evil” that’s like saying all art and beauty is purely wasteful and evil, it’s silly and parochial thinking. But YES, let’s all together keep the discussion and thought process ACTIVE- we shouldn’t fall prey to consumerism when money is so hard to earn and save. And it’s just too stressful to manage and store too much in our wardrobes. God bless you and thank you again for your transparency and honesty! Good work!!
I do declutter every now and then, it's good to know what i wear often and what kind of styles and colors that i dont go for, so i don't make the same mistakes in the future and know my style better . Also giving away pieces that are in a good shape is a good deed anyone who would receive them would be happy .
i dont have as much stuff as you do, in the sense that im looking at what youre keeping and thinking that i should get that stuff too so ive got all my basics. very useful this way as well, even though i do have stuff ive never worn and what i should throw away lol
I know a lot of people advise against fast fashion, but I think that fast fashion works for some people. I don't usually buy it, I mostly buy from department stores, but I don't buy clothes often and I keep the clothes I buy for many years (because I don't have many clothes in the first place, it's like all of my clothes are staples). But I think for someone who changes their mind about the things they buy a lot, fast fashion is a good idea bc it allows you to try styles without the risk of investing
Have to pause the video to say I think you did an amazing job minimizing the coats! :o I have such a hard time with outerwear as I live in a cold climate and I hoard coats. That was inspiring, haha.
Interesting how you mentioned fast fashion cause it really got me thinking. when i see something i want to buy i always rethink it many times efore i buy it i never buy it asap cause i know i will regret it this helps me, and prevents me from buying things i dont need or dont really like. on the other hand i do believe that we only live once and our youth is passing right in front of our eyes. there are fancy clothes i wont wear when i will be 40 years old so i buy some fancier clothesi like to make the most wear out of them. and last but not least i like to invest as much as i can to more expensive items like bags cause i dont like wearing different bag every day. i wear one backpack for 6 or 8 months then i buy something new etc. this helped me for hoarding bags and bags i didnt want and didnt use anymore
That sequin blue jacket, i saw it has a ribbon so tighten up it would be adorable with a pair of large long black pants and those black sandals you have. And a clutch. Or with greish pants, mmm.
A tip to get the shoes to fit. Place one shoe with the toe facing toward you and the other shoe with the toe facing away from you. I can fit four pairs of shoes on my shoe rack. Even if the shoes concerned are boots or big chunky shoes.
I think you should maybe try to buy more consciously by making an inventory of everything you own in a notebook, on your cell, in pictures, etc so you can refer to it while shopping and don't buy things that are very similar. Also, really thinking about your style, what you want to look like, etc. would make it easier to not buy things that you wont end up liking or wearing later on. The book The Curated Closet would be a great help to you. Good luck!
btw a way you can fit in the sneakers (or any other shoe) is by alternating the direction they face- one facing the back of the shelf and the other one facing outwards. i thought i would share it :) although i prefer the look of all pointed to the same direction
This is going to sound like a daft comment but don't get rid of too much if you plan to have kids! 😆 I always think this watching de-cluttering vids. I have 3 and I never buy myself anything anymore, and most mums are the same. I can still remember all the lovely (and useful) clothes I got rid of over the years & wish I still owned! 😝 especially good coats, they're expensive! 💔🙈 all yours were lovely!
Hey Alix! Quick question - have you still got hold of the Topshop black tote bag that you showed at about 17.00 minutes in! I was desparate to get hold of it when they were in stores and it was just always out of stock! Don't think I can see it on your depop so just wondering if you still have hold of it!? xxx
Fast fashion is such a harmful industry in so many ways. Consumers throw away their money on cheap, shoddily made goods, in quantities that they under consume and them foist off on charities of landfills. Subsequently retailers offering better quality items on a slower release schedule go out of business and put employees out of work. Save you money and buy better quality goods - they'll wear better, last longer. I can't stand fast food style clothing.
Instead of giving away the chewed boots. Take the material off the heel and either put more fabric on using fabric glue, or use glitter with some Modge Podge clear matt glue.
Don't know if this tip will help but some people say take photos of your sentimental items. They say that then you still have the memory but it means you don't then have to store all the items - which allows you to then let go? Hope this tip helps you.
Charity shops usually rag things that can't be sold and so they get money from the rags. They can rag clothes, shoes and bags :) Just a tip if you have shoes that are no good to sell or donate :)
Watching this instead of cleaning out my wardrobe counts as being productive right? I'm getting inspired!
Oh yes totally ;P
I love how you acknowledged the comments ppl left on your last video, even though to me some of them weren't so gentle in delivery. it shows you're a great listener and can put things into perspective for yourself. New fan :)

This is why my shopping philosophy is that id rather spend $250 on 1 coat that I will wear for years than $250 on 5 coats that I'll wear twice
Really great idea!

I think the tan trench coat looked fantastic on you! Such a classic cut and color!
I love that you actually cleared a lot of stuff out! Good job xx

Seeing that beautiful grey suede jacket go was the hardest I've ever gasped
Refreshing your Depop in real time whilst watching your clear-out. I've never been so quick to a video before!

you can definitively change the heels in the leopard print boots
I love the blue lining in the green parka! The pink one is gorgeus as well.

I'm planning away now & might film the process if it actually ever happens!
I love your little office nook. So precious.
As an Australian it is surreal to hear you say you love trenchcoats in summer, haha!
Zip up those coats!!!! They tend to loose their shape or stretch weirdly when you store them if don't.

That sequin blue jacket, i saw it has a ribbon so tighten up it would be adorable with a pair of large long black pants and those black sandals you have. And a clutch. Or with greish pants, mmm.
There's a netflix original called True Cost. It's a must watch for the effect of fast fashion. Eye opener
Those pink flower velvet ones uhhhh 😍😍😍😍
checking out your depop and noticing you're the same shoe size as me made me so excited. bring on payday!!
Wooo!
Just saw claire marshalls new sunglasses rack- a nail polish wall rack from amazon and looks amazing!
You have so much stuff you've never worn! 😱
Your coat collection puts mine to shame! I literally own one winter coat and one summer coat 🙈 x
I had a long coat for 12 years and I finally got rid of it this year. It was still good.
Honestly this is thrilling to me haha. Love this so much.
A tip to get the shoes to fit. Place one shoe with the toe facing toward you and the other shoe with the toe facing away from you. I can fit four pairs of shoes on my shoe rack. Even if the shoes concerned are boots or big chunky shoes.
yes! pls do the beauty clear out videos
now, we need a haul!!
do you thinking bright colors for your tops and tees and skirt? and having bright colors background.
Why am I just now finding you??? Loved watching. Subscribed!
I want the white tulle skirt! Been looking for one!
After you finish cleaning your office upstairs, could you please make an office tour video?!?!☺️👏🏻😁💗
Could you please tell me where do you prefer to sell your things besides Depop ?
I live in Liv ... any suggestion ?
I think you should maybe try to buy more consciously by making an inventory of everything you own in a notebook, on your cell, in pictures, etc so you can refer to it while shopping and don't buy things that are very similar. Also, really thinking about your style, what you want to look like, etc. would make it easier to not buy things that you wont end up liking or wearing later on. The book The Curated Closet would be a great help to you. Good luck!
btw a way you can fit in the sneakers (or any other shoe) is by alternating the direction they face- one facing the back of the shelf and the other one facing outwards. i thought i would share it :) although i prefer the look of all pointed to the same direction
buth 83 I do this too! Saves me space by being able to add in an extra pair.
💔🙈 all yours were lovely!
you should look on eBay at acrylic sunglasses holders. they aren't expensive and they are really nice to display ur glasses.x
Hey Alix! Quick question - have you still got hold of the Topshop black tote bag that you showed at about 17.00 minutes in! I was desparate to get hold of it when they were in stores and it was just always out of stock! Don't think I can see it on your depop so just wondering if you still have hold of it!? xxx
It is really hard to decide but you end up feeling so great 😎
Love your choice of Carl Simon
Fave!
I'm sure you can get the chewed heels fixed. They can either be recovered or replaced.
It was fun watching you declutter. It's pretty motivating. Just curious why you would keep a pair of boots that hurt your feet though?
I love love loveeeee clear out videos❤️
I'm sure you could get the leopard boots repaired, they just need a new heel if you still like them
also the komono jacket would look great with denim shorts a vest and sandals!! don't chuck it!
Maybe you should watch "True cost". It is a very interesting documentary about how clothes are made! It shows the industry of fast fashion
If you put the shoe toe one in and the other one out, you can store more pairs in one shelf.🙂
Awesome idea!
You're having a good hair day, my dear. PS. You totally can get those leopard booties repaired. A cobbler can re-glue some leather on the heel.
I am new to your channel, so I'm unsure if anyone has ever told you this, but you look a lot like Drew Barrymore. You're beautiful!
Keep the tulle skirt. :-) You could wear it at a wedding.
Great organising your wardrobe video 😊
Instead of giving away the chewed boots. Take the material off the heel and either put more fabric on using fabric glue, or use glitter with some Modge Podge clear matt glue.
Love love this, seriously need to do this! x
So satisfying!
How comfortable have you found the Jenson boots? Thinking of investing in these this winter but hear they kill your feet before they get better? X
For me they've been very comfortable since the first wear and with time they just molded to my feet.
I love a lllll the flats! :D if you end up getting rid of any of them i'd love to buy a pair!
This makes me want to never shop again haha
LOVEEEEE YOUR HAIR!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I've been absolutely in love with the black topshop biker coat since you got it. Are you going to sell it? :)
Don't know if this tip will help but some people say take photos of your sentimental items. They say that then you still have the memory but it means you don't then have to store all the items - which allows you to then let go? Hope this tip helps you.
Omg how can you have sooo many shoes??? But I love how much you declutter
Charity shops usually rag things that can't be sold and so they get money from the rags. They can rag clothes, shoes and bags :) Just a tip if you have shoes that are no good to sell or donate :)
