  • This Zen Taiso (exercise/movement) routine led by Matt Shinkai Kane Roshi was recorded on sesshin (zen retreat) at in Japan in July 2018.
In Japan (and other countries), both Zen monks and lay practitioners practice a variety of exercises (taiso) ranging from individual stretching (lunges, hip releases, and chest openers) to group routines. These routines focus on consciously and mindfully relaxing areas of the body through stretching (in particular areas that need extra care after long hours of sitting). In this practice, the body is one’s object of focus or mindfulness and the best way to work with it from moment-to-moment is one's koan. In that way, Zen Taiso can lead directly to awakening (kensho).
In this routine, each posture/movement is done to a count of 10 in Japanese (Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Go, Roku, Shichi, Hachi, Kyu Ju).
Zen master Shinkai leads the Blue Cliff Zen Centre in Eugene, Oregon, USA, which forms part of the Zenways sangha.

Great to practice this, thank you. Is this particular sequence season-specific to summer? If so, could you record some for other seasons, place? So much appreciated, thank you 🙏🏼

Lengthening all the muscles at the back of the legs from the lower spine to the heels is one of the best things a person can do for themselves...and is also the ultimate aid to long periods of sitting in stillness. Sadly much neglected by most Buddhists.
