I'm genuinely surprised Apple priced these at the same level as their intel-predecessors. From a performance perspective, it feels like they could have easily upped the price. The Air now smokes the outgoing MBP 13" which until last week, was still on sale for £/$300 more!
Well they are still getting better margins than the intel ones they sold previously. It makes a lot more business sense to keep the prices the same especially now that they have a compelling product for people with MS laptops. I have a Surface Book 2 and really considering the Macbook pro right now.
for many people they are not functionally equivalent yet, no full compatibility, no bootcamp, no virtualisation, lot of software development tools don't work on these yet.
@@rasmeet4594 'Yah I really love the battery life on these. My only concern is the compatibility of some apps and games. I'll be sold if POE runs ok on this lol.

I know these new M1 Macbooks are supposed to handle memory differently, but do not know how much of a difference 16GB (vs standard 8GB) is going to make. Are the new versions of the "pro" Apple apps super optimized?
If you don't already have Final Cut (which is $300 new) then I'd say don't bother, especially because there's very okay phone video editors, or free but beefy programs like Davinci Resolve.
@UC3KXwqiV9e8wEu0HIs0pL5w Video editing will probably be better on the MBP because it can sustain higher clock speeds (I think that’s the word) due to the fan. I think if you’re doing it at the amateur level any of these 3 would probably be fine. If you need a lot of power I would hold off until they update the 16” or make a more powerful smaller one (maybe 14”?)
You’re half right. *The 2019 MacBook Pro 13 became the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air became the MacBook Pro 13. And the MacBook Pro 13 became the MacBook Pro 16.
You and Quinn are my favorite Apple channels! Excellent content and well thought out analysis. Can't wait to see what Apple does next with Apple silicon in the Mac!
I don't think they can and still stay within the bandwidth specs. They will need another controller on the board and that will increase the cost. These are the base models. I'm sure that within a year we will see apple silicon powered MacBooks with 4 ports.
Dom Percy you shouldn’t make assumptions of other people’s uses based on your limited use. And not everyone wants to have a hub dangling if they regularly use more ports, esp in a portable/traveling setting. There’s also a degree of loss in data transfer efficiency when you don’t plug directly into the laptop itself. it’s a workaround yes, but not ideal for everyone

Macbook air has been a favourite of students since its introduction. For students who would mostly use basic programs day to day, maybe a small amount of picture/video editing, is the base model m1 air plenty?
Luke could you possibly try to install ubuntu on one of these arm macs. Ubuntu 20.10 now supports raspi natively so i think there is a chance it will work on M1. Even if you don't install, please try to boot up from the USB installer. Thanks much love your channel. Also maybe flashing the Windows on ARM virtual machine hard disk to a real partition and try booting from it. Thanks
Highly unlikely to be possible now all reports thus far have been saying Apple tied down the bootloader to only run signed software similar to idevices

I’m still on a 2015 MacBook Air. Both these laptops look really great, I’m just a bit sad that small storage upgrades still demand a high premium. I might wait until the next generation of one of these laptops come out before finally saying goodbye to my MacBook Air 👋
I'm also in a 2015 MBA with 4gigs of ram hahaha. I use mostly closed with a 4k 29" monitor as my main display. It's good for watching videos and light workflow. I'm thinking about upgrading when the M2 comes out refining possible bugs from the fist generation Mac ARM chips.
I’m about to drop the bullet and buy either a new MPA or MBP and I’m seriously thinking about just getting the base 256gb storage and buy a good quality external drive to store the my video files. I think Apple are taking the piss charging £/$200 to upgrade from 256 to 512gb! BTW I have a 2017 MBA and it basically stops if I load native GoPro Max 360 video and try and edit, so I expect the new M1 version to perform like my iPad Pro and fly with them. So for me it makes sense to upgrade now and sell my existing devices to help cover the cost
@Vishnu MRV I also have a mid 2012 MBP and I can't wait to update! I just don't know if I should wait for the next generation. Since it's the first of the pack, the second one intrigues me. 2012 MBP still works like a charm so.. it's just about being patient or not.
i have propably watched every single reliable review on the M1 mbp and mba and i think yours is my favorite. you convinced me to get the MBP instead of the Air because i think it`ll suit my needs better and, for that, i dont mind paying the extra 300$ bucks. thank you :)
13" on the road - sure esp with 20hrs batt - but did you connect to a 4096*2160 display at 60 fps? What's the tested upper limit of a 'single' display on these back in the editing room? 5K ? 6K? fps?
There's actually a big difference between emulation and the translation layer that Apple is using, which contributes to the high performance that we're seeing on Apple silicon. ARM based Windows machines use emulation whereas the translation layer that is used for Apple silicon is closer to something like Wine
@@spoompls42069 seeing as how Apple has had problems in the past with not cooling chips properly I wouldnt be surprised if this fan in the macbook pro also meant longevity over the macbook air
It would be interesting to put the Air an an alloy heat sink and run it hard and long to see if that made it run any cooler? Cooling the chassis in this way would confirm whether active cooling is the difference that it appears to be.
I really want an Air due to how much lighter it is (surprisingly my dad's MBA feels way lighter than my MBP) and I reallllly don't want the Touch Bar, but the MBP makes more sense for what I do. Torn.
I think it's a good idea to get the pro, if that works better with the work you do! The touchbar is kind of meh, I know, but it's honestly not that bad either. Especially when you switch it to display the function keys. It's not like anyone has the position and the haptic feel of the f7 key in their muscle memory lol. And being honest, the MBP is kind of really light as well haha Keep us updated, I'd like to know which one you end up getting!
Same here. I had actually planned to buy the i7 intel iMac on Black Friday (in case of a good deal) and get the Air a few years later (or earlier, if my current 11 year old MacBook Pro dies), but now with seeing this I’m not so sure anymore if I should spend so much money on the iMac. Main reason for me to go for a higher end model is Blender 3D and playing games like Obduction or Firmament.
I sold my 3 thousand dollar MacBook Pro i9 16 inch for 1800$ and got my self a MacBook Pro m1 with 16 gb ram and 1 tb ssd and this MacBook is amazingly fast. i only use it for fcp and h.265 files so now I won't be needing anything else for the next 4 years at least! great review
When you spend a lot of time in meetings (pre-Covid world), the ability to work without the machine spooling up obnoxious fans can't be overstated. Even without the huge performance and battery increases, the fan noise would be enough - to me - to justify the upgrade from an early 2019 16" MBP.
Unfortunately, the base MBA M1 only has 7 GPU cores vs the 8 in the base MPB configuration. Since some of his benchmarks were GPU limited and not CPU limited, the approx 15% GPU difference was not taken into the benchmarks. No one would dispute the MBA will throttle on some workloads (otherwise, you would never need that fan), so both the lower raw GPU power and throttling were accounting for the difference vs the MPB,IMO. He needs the 8 gpu MBA for a test to pick up the thermal response of the M! in the MBA. I am still leaning towardthe MBP for the extra performance due to thermal throttling and the other upgrades.
I think Luke's being a bit harsh there. For me this design would be fine, but it's a matter of preference. Some people might prefer a different design over performance and that's fine too.
@@jariristiranta9163 Yeah, but this MacBook was all about getting out the new Apple Silicon chips out to people, Apple will definitely come with a new design in the future, but this very MacBooks was just to keep their point that 'well, this is our baseline, and there is more to come'

First, no fan means less or no dust, as well as the perfect reliability. This will be the main reason I pick MBA over MBP, plus you won't hear any noises at all. Remember the dust will slow down your machine over time. Secondly, the current MAP is based on a four years old mold which will get a major update in 2021 for sure (the 14-inch MBP), basically, you are buying an "old" product if you choose MBP. There is no chance Apple will update the MPA product line next year relatively.
They didn't just remove the fan. They redesigned the heatsink to allow for fan-less operation. There is a giant heatsink where you would put the fan. There may be kits in the future, but I think for the price difference, you might as well just get a pro then.

@@s3er0i9ng Oh for sure, I'm just surprised they didn't up the price to reflect the increase in performance, this is Apple after all ;)
@@AHR_James Lol so true!
Solid work honestly, very good review/comparison!
I really want to see someone benchmark/test the 8GB variant vs the 16GB. I use Logic Pro X for music production and really want to buy one of these M1 Macbooks (for the battery life, power, etc), but I currently have a Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM. I know these new M1 Macbooks are supposed to handle memory differently, but do not know how much of a difference 16GB (vs standard 8GB) is going to make. Are the new versions of the "pro" Apple apps super optimized?
Don’t worry about it, i’m sure in the next few days people will do comparisons of the mbp 16gb of ram vs 8
The best video comparing the 2 devices! Thank you

Superb analysis as always.
I’m struggling should I buy the Mac Mini M1 or hold off because I’m trying to learn Final Cut Pro for my channel.
Love the content Freeware
Idk
get the mini if u want to save money and dont want a laptop, if u want a laptop go for mb air
If you need a lot of power I would hold off until they update the 16” or make a more powerful smaller one (maybe 14”?)
luke man let me tell you, YOU NAILED IT jesus lord
You’re half right. *The 2019 MacBook Pro 13 became the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air became the MacBook Pro 13. And the MacBook Pro 13 became the MacBook Pro 16.
and mbp 16 will become the imac lol
@@mohdayman4522 It’ll be a whole Mac Pro 😂
@@Prem-j9l3s yeah lol😂😂
You and Quinn are my favorite Apple channels! Excellent content and well thought out analysis. Can't wait to see what Apple does next with Apple silicon in the Mac!
Two more ports... Just give me two more ports.
Just get hub? I’ve had a 2016 mbp with Touch Bar for 4 years now and I literally only use 2. The 3rd and 4th are for like, charging my phone lol
I don't think they can and still stay within the bandwidth specs. They will need another controller on the board and that will increase the cost.
These are the base models. I'm sure that within a year we will see apple silicon powered MacBooks with 4 ports.
m1x or m2 will probably have better IO
Dom Percy you shouldn’t make assumptions of other people’s uses based on your limited use. And not everyone wants to have a hub dangling if they regularly use more ports, esp in a portable/traveling setting. There’s also a degree of loss in data transfer efficiency when you don’t plug directly into the laptop itself. it’s a workaround yes, but not ideal for everyone
@@extra4542 my “limited use” is over 4 years of using it as a professional graphic designer and video editor lol. I can see how people may want like 4 6K displays but this mac clearly isn’t for them so they wouldn’t even be considering it
Good remarks on the drive speed, I was not aware...
Should I go buy the Air today or wait for more testing?
Get it. I've been using my m1 base air since yesterday and I returned my $1800 pro for it and I have zero regrets. It is an amazing deal. Same screen as the pro minus a bit of brightness. Super fast, battery life is insane. It is awesome.
@@BlueBackflip How about speakers? Any differences?
@@BlueBackflip you convinced me. Going after work today to get one. Thx
I bought one yesterday and yes it is amazing. TH-cam animations are finaly smooth.
16GB RAM limit sucks in almost 2021, and the fact that the M1 isn't good enough for the 16" model speaks volumes.
This is the comparison video that I needed, thanks!
I can’t even imagine the next M2, faster, more power efficient, Rosetta gets better, and same non-existing fan noise!
Upgrading from 2011 MBP and MM. Cant wait its in the mail already.
The M1 probably has a comparable RAM limit to your 2011 model.
@@dmhendricks Actually the limit was 8gb which I personally updated along with an SSD. However, I tried to edit a 4k video from a Canon M50 and it almost cough fire and never loaded the footage.
Luke, can you please install and run several iPad and iPhone apps in the new laptops.
I saw someone running 10 iPad apps (including games) on a pro fluntely
Thank you for the video and all the information. I'm switching from Windows to Mac and am so excited! I'm seriously looking at the 13" MacBook Pro. I appreciate all the info you shared.
7:58 - 2020 Luke talking to 2019 Luke.
Loved the comparison, well scripted and explained. I will keep my 2018 MBP
You remind me of Eric from That 70's Show
Haha foreskin
@@alexmeek610 Oh, That is issue

"These are some FAN-tastic laptops" 👀
Underrated Channel!!
I'm watching this video on the M1 13" MacBook Pro.
How is the performance? Battery?
Yeah how is it ?????
How do you like it?
How’s it? I just ordered the same
The performance is amazing! Definitely a lot faster! Doesn’t heat up or have loud fan noise! The battery is also incredible! I haven’t needed to plug it in since I opened it yesterday!!
This video is exactly what i need right now. Thanks!
Meh, I’m satisfied with the 2017 MacBook Air until the second or third version of the M1 Air with a better webcam is released.
Excellent review. Thanks for this comparison.
OUH OUH BUT APPLE DIDN’T CHANGE THE DESIGNS. THE BEZELS ARE STILL SO THICC.
No adds I love it
I would still prefer the pro.. I really don't like the wedge shape
Agreed. There’s something that’s more uniform about the squared design. And, the fan is useful for sustained performance.
@@spoompls42069 yes that’s right
@@spoompls42069 seeing as how Apple has had problems in the past with not cooling chips properly I wouldnt be surprised if this fan in the macbook pro also meant longevity over the macbook air
It would be interesting to put the Air an an alloy heat sink and run it hard and long to see if that made it run any cooler? Cooling the chassis in this way would confirm whether active cooling is the difference that it appears to be.
"these are some fantastic laptops" -- except the air is fanlesstastic
Great review luke . Wish they increase the ports .
And being honest, the MBP is kind of really light as well haha
Keep us updated, I'd like to know which one you end up getting!
Who else left their zoom meetings just to watch this video?
I’m still running my later 2013 retina MacBook Pro. They’re built like tanks. Wouldn’t worry about how it will hold up over time.
When you spend a lot of time in meetings (pre-Covid world), the ability to work without the machine spooling up obnoxious fans can't be overstated. Even without the huge performance and battery increases, the fan noise would be enough - to me - to justify the upgrade from an early 2019 16" MBP.
Just bought a MacBook Air because of this.
Subscribed. 😎
5-20% spec increase for 30% more.... the only thing you can say that is “obsolete “ is that mbp 16
Nah, the MBP isn’t obsolete. It’s more outdated than obsolete
Insanely great master Luke!
Like others, I predict Apple will launch a 16” MBP and 24” iMac with the M1X and all new designs. Damn that would be tasty 😎
He needs the 8 gpu MBA for a test to pick up the thermal response of the M! in the MBA. I am still leaning towardthe MBP for the extra performance due to thermal throttling and the other upgrades.
you so smart.
All the dislikes came from the butt hurt people because of 8:06.
LOL THAT MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD THAT SCENE WAS SO FUNNY
I think Luke's being a bit harsh there. For me this design would be fine, but it's a matter of preference. Some people might prefer a different design over performance and that's fine too.
@@jariristiranta9163 Yeah, but this MacBook was all about getting out the new Apple Silicon chips out to people, Apple will definitely come with a new design in the future, but this very MacBooks was just to keep their point that 'well, this is our baseline, and there is more to come'
@@naman_2341 yeah i feel like next year when they release the 16” and maybe a 14” after that every macbook will have slim bezels, personally i don’t really care about the bezels LOL ima get the macbook air since the pro isn’t worth an extra 300 dollars
Apple fans : You are stupid for caring about design
Apple re-designs Macbook ......
Apple fans : This is it! This is so much better and revolutionary.
I was so sleepy I thought your name on screen said lukemia 😂
Thank you man. I love and watch all your videos. I believe you make a great work :)
Just buy the air and get a fan from eBay
I was thinking same thing.
I hope this is sarcasm.
They didn't just remove the fan. They redesigned the heatsink to allow for fan-less operation. There is a giant heatsink where you would put the fan. There may be kits in the future, but I think for the price difference, you might as well just get a pro then.
Cooling pads do work. How well it work on the new Air is another question.
@@chinitopinoy1726 they work on devices with vents.
