Every aunty was a girl that hated aunties once. It's a never ending circle
Every marriage function is a rite of passage for Indian girls becoming indian aunties.

@@hiidupiidu3292 yes
@@hiidupiidu3292 Exactly. They are going to scream but marriage, children and family are linked--for long term psychological security. And in that men have no chance unless they make a 'great' living. Women, may or may not be working. In a way a sensible system. But wisdom is wasted on the young.
@Amelia Jones You can be mad or look at it as a positive sign, that you will also find love and marriage. I mean they are saying this only because they think of it as good. There is no reason to be mad. Change the way you look at things.
@Amelia Jones yes they ask like that it sometimes sounds so cringe.
"never ask a girl her age and a man his salary"
Aunties: I will pretend like I didn't hear it
And a boy his age and a woman her salary too but they'll go to extra lengths to avoid that as well. Aunties. Hmph.

- your education/work
- how great their own children are doing
- why you should get married
- who you should get married to
- your complexion and/or your weight
- gossip about somebody else's child
🥲
not just complexion and weight, height, acne, hair, voice, body shape, basically everything
And their own children sometimes failed twice in boards
Aunties comment on my weight and my height saying
aunties: Which grade are you in?
me: 8th grade
Huh? But you are so short and thin! Doesn't your mom feed you? You need to eat more

This is so true. I lost my dad to cancer. And one of the 'aunties' comes to me and says that my not getting married was the reason for his cancer.
Is she an uneducated lady? In which age she's living probably in 17th century, she's living under rock basically how can she say that to you?? You should have counter back her when she was saying such a crap to you, first of all u are sad because ur dad died and this disgusting lady ewww I hope you get married to a good man
I havnt spoken to her since - it's been 3 years now. But this scene brought back a lot of such unhappy 'aunty' memories
no indian aunties don't do that on this level
it's shows how completely she is uneducated and ignorant
That's so twisted...😒
How come you did not give her the best doctor award?
I am a Pakistani and all aunties act exactly the same way. The only thing they missed here is that comment on your color and skin and suggest weird home remedies and fairness creams. And they also missed how they always ask for your grades. The grades thing changes over time from "what are your grades?" to "when are you getting married?". I mean once I dressed up a bit more for a party and all the aunties kept coming and asking my mom in front of me if i was engaged or if my parents were approached by the parents of a suitor for an arranged marriage.

I love North East India, most of them are very open minded and it's really refreshing to see that.
Wow. That's a thing unheard of.
It's kinda similar in himachal as well. But idk why I love NE . One trip there and it has had my heart ever since ❤️
well not sure about that my assamese aunties and even my blood related family (grandma, mausis etc) act like this 💀
My mom has NEVER behaved like any of those women to anyone around inspite of being brought up in an extremely conservative family with many toxic people around
She has faced a lot of it and has decided not to pass it on through generations.
I donno if I'll be as open minded as her.
Proud of my mother 🥰🥰
Same here
Soon she will, i also thought the same for my mum BUT
As soon my mom crossed 60 yr of age and she became one of the "aunties"

I love how Netflix is starting to make coming of age shows and movies with more ethnic representation. If we look back to the early 2000s movies there isn't a lot of representation, and when there is it's in a very stereotypical way. It's refreshing to think that young girls can relate to Devi and other characters who are most likely going through the same cultural and household similarities.

Divya, her Mom and cousin dressed in classical South Indian style. And yes, Indian women come in a diverse range of skin tones and there are plenty of South Indian women who are light skinned.
The definition about the aunties was actually really accurate.
The dialogue rings so true. These conversations happen all the time throughout the Indian diaspora. They are a lively source of humor wherever they occur. I like this show
The indian auntie’s introduction part is accurate even if you are away from India like for example, in Singapore but it will not just be your indian aunties but also their Chinese and Malay friends which will also be classified as Aunties.
Being an Indian, I can confirm that those aunties were way too sweet.
Trust me these aunties are far better than the relatives most of us have around us.
To all the Indian Aunties out there "please look after your own daughters and sons rather than looking after children who are not yours".
I really hate it when my aunties start digging into my personal life by acting all sweet. TBH it sucks, Aunties!. The way it all starts with education and ends with "when are you getting married?". Now that I am older, I am aware that it was not the affection or care they had towards me. Rather it was more of SARCASM.
I'm Indian and this is 100% accurate to what happens in real life in India. Thnx for the vid Netflix Ji. keep posting!.
In South Africa as well
In my experience I can confirm "aunties" exist across all race. Just because we do not call a Hispanic, asian, Black or White an auntie doesn't mean they don't exist. However, this scene was definitely my favorite and I agree that some brown aunties love to turn tofu into toffee.

Im not sure why they didn’t bring up, “KANNA DIDN’T YOU APPLY FAIR AND LOVELY? MY FRIENDS DAUGHTER USED TO APPLY AND NOW SHE ALL WHITE! SHE EVEN WHITER THAN ME!”
All those criticizing here keep one thing in mind that even they are also humans. As an Indian even I have come across some unpleasant experiences but we don't know what struggles they went through in their life or are still going. See they had really different life than what we are having. They had to go through much more struggles and discrimination. Today the things that we take as unexpected and unbelievable were a norm back in their times even the things we take for granted today were a real luxury in those days so they actually never had the comfort that we have today. We need to be understanding, I know sometimes they can suck but it's not their fault it was the fault of the Society they grew up and lived in. Their society was not even half or quarter open or accepting. There are similar Uncles aswell. In short the society was like that. We new generation should be thankful for what we got. We literally got everything without doing anything, because of them. For old people its their second childhood so let them enjoy it. Do pls be understanding and humane with them and with everyone. Let's make our society understanding , humane and more accepting.
