      What about east coast? Specifically the Northern Virginia area like McLean, Arlington, Pentagon, etc. Basically all the largest defense companies like Lockheed, Northrup, Boeing, etc. i imagine the pay is equal if not more in these specific areas? Do you have any information related to the Northern VA area? Thanks @Colin Late

      Although you can make good income in tech near DC, it's mostly not in the defense sector. Amazon, Google and the regulars all pay well there. Defense employees may be paid well, but they do not advertise what they sell or even do for work. They also do not always get equity, which is a big part of tech compensation. Palantir sells to defense sector and can pay well, but you won't make as much as you can in the SF bay area mostly because there are just fewer jobs and companies that pay as much. But you can certainly have a great career.

      If you know more about Lockheed engineers making more than this list I'd love to know.

    This is a great video! My goal is to get into enterprise SAAS sales. I work for a major telecommunications company, and I'm working on boosting my education....bachelor's in marketing. MBA, and bachelors in computer science. I hope all this will make me a strong candidate. I am also fascinated by some of these international cities. I'd love to work in one of them.

      You can get into tech sales without a college degree!

    Can you make video about top 10 most money saving tech city per year in USA and Worldwide not in percentage but in total number of dollars saved per year because in the end its not how much you make as immigrant because the cost of living and tax is insane in some countries its about how much you take back to your country that what matters, if you make a video on that I would be thankful.

    • @ColinLate
      @ColinLate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Certainly. It's not just by country, but y US State. Cost of living is another big factor. Example: Seattle vs. San Francisco.
      $200k in Seattle = $147k take home vs. $132k in San Francisco. Then in SF, you're spending $1k to $3k extra on average per month for housing, or 12-36k/year, which is 18-54k/year before tax income just to make up for housing costs. Since I live in the US, I'm not sure I'm the best person to do the full breakdown, but I'll link to an article or video if someone makes one and I can add commentary.

    Great video! I'm a lawyer who would like to change careers and become a UX designer. Unfortunately, the average income for UX designers in Germany is 50k per year before taxes. Also, I have heard that the field is oversaturated. Do you agree?

    • @ColinLate
      @ColinLate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, German companies do not pay as well, but if you get into a Growth-stage company (see my Top 10 roles in tech for explainers on different stages of company) you can still get some upside from equity compensation. You may also be able to get into the bigger companies who have offices in Germany or other EU cities (e.g. Uber has a design team in Amsterdam). It is competitive to get entry-level UX roles, so you'll need to hustle to get in, but once you have some experience in tech you will be in-demand. Try working online for startups to start out.

    Any thoughts on Berlin(Germany), Kitchener-Waterloo(Canada), Tallin(Estonia) and Singapore?

    • @ColinLate
      @ColinLate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Berlin has some good companies, yes. Startups specifically but it is a tough market. More conservative in terms of venture capital.
      Kitchener-Waterloo is the home of one of the best Software Engineering/Computer Science schools in the world, so Google and many tech companies have built offices there. The pay in Canada is way lower than major US cities, but it is getting better and you can make a very good living.
      I am not familiar with Estonia's or Singapore's tech communities, but would love to learn more!

    You should talk about the process from getting your visa as a Canadian

    • @ColinLate
      @ColinLate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This has changed a bit, but often the path is to get a TN visa (cheap and sponsored by most tech companies), then apply for H1B until you get it through the lottery, then apply for PERM/Green Card. Some have gone straight from TN to Permanent Residency, though only a lawyer can tell you how and if that is possible for you.
      TN visas are a little harder to come by these days, but there are easy ones if you have a bachelors in cs/software eng, and some others for the non-tech folks, such as Economist (doesn't always work), Management Consultant, etc. A lawyer and a lot of Googling is the only way to tell if your specific situation will get you a chance at a visa.
