Yea, the nightlife is.... interesting... There are a few bars in town that we used to frequent when we lived there. It's a great place to visit though!
Several restaurants have vegan options. They range from the classic salad and fries, to more full on vegan options. No, Paul does not live there. He used to but he moved away a long time ago.
We highly recommend Mikes! If you go, tell him we sent you! We have many fond memories and a lot of friends from our time with them, but we are no longer affiliated with Sea Shepherd due to personal reasons.
Pros: SJI is absolutely insanely beautiful throughout the entire year. It’s never too hot nor is it ever too cold. It’s a really cool community and they really band together outside of the tourist season. There’s a fantastic vegan restaurant called Mikes Cafe and Wine Bar. Wildlife is super abundant and you have the orcas nearby. Cons: during tourist season, things get trickier. It’s more difficult to find parking and to get on the ferry either way. The island goes from about 3,000 to 30,000 people for about 5 months and you can sense the extra tourists. During the off season, things close early/entire days. Some of your favorite places only make it a year before going out of business. Affordable living is tough on the island and in the major areas of the PNW in general due to the high tech market. Housing is difficult to get in Seattle/Portland. If you can snag a small apartment on a short term lease, it gives you the opportunity to explore the area before committing to something longer.
Having lived on San Juan Island, and knowing that the economy is largely tourism based, I’d imagine attracting attention to the island would generally increase the profits of the tourism industry there. As a local, we always enjoyed the down cycle when tourism slowed down, but we also watched people we knew lose their businesses because the local population can’t support them through the off season.
I live there

I visited Friday Harbor with my wife in 2016. Very quaint with a great Lighthouse. Not much nightlife. Lavender farm is nice as well.

Thats so awesome! We love the store and farm. In fact, we use the linen spray overnight before bed- heaven!
