  • We are Mark & Rad, a travel couple based out of South Carolina. For this video we explore the beautiful San Juan Islands where we will walk through lavender fields, drink local wine from a vineyard and watch Orcas (killer whales) swim in the wild. The San Juan Islands are such a magnificent place, and Friday Harbor is the crown jewel of the San Juan islands. There are many amazing restaurants and dining options in the city of Friday Harbor on this island but there is much more to see and do. First we went to Lime Kiln State Park to see wild life and try to spot an Orca from shore. Then we went to the Lighthouse as well as the American and British camp historical park on the island to learn about the history...which is a fun thing to do. Then we stopped by San Juan Vineyards to enjoy a really great glass of wine before heading to Pelindaba Lavender Farms to see the beautiful lavender fields they have. After exploring all day and eating at Downrigger (which we recommend) we took a tour to see Orcas or Killer Whales.....and met up with an entire pod just a few miles off shore. This was the highlight of the trip. San Juan Islands are the place no one has heard of unless you live in the area, at least for us and we loved this island so much we plan to return as soon as possible. They have it all, including a Llama farm, Crystal Acres Llama farm has animals you can see and interact with as well as many wonderful goods made from the wool they sheer from the animals. We would totally recommend putting San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest, just a 1 hour ferry ride from Washington state on your bucketlist. We hope you enjoy the video and as always safe travels.

    Mark, the Hudson's Bay Company pig was an oft trespassing boar into a nearby American settler's garden, and was shot dead long before the two forces occupied the island. The U.S. forces, led by George Pickett of Civil War fame, came first, less because of the pig, more that the American settlers claimed they might be attacked by Haida Indians. Since the border between Canada and America around the San Juan Islands hadn't been clearly articulated, the British ships came from nearby Victoria because the American forces were present. There was no dividing line between the forces, in fact they occasionally traveled to party with one another during the 12 year joint occupation! Other than the mildly erroneous history account, your video was very well produced and I gave it a thumbs up!

    Wow I live in Western Washington and have been to the San Juans multiple times, but this is easily the best and highest resolution footage I've ever seen of the islands! The drone footage especially was incredible!

      Thank you very much for the compliment! You are so lucky you live close enough to visit multiple times. Rad and I both agree this is one spot we want to go back to. If you live in Western Washington you have it all there….we also visited Olympic National Park which was also a top 5 for us too. It’s truly Incredible out there.

      Youre welcome, we booked ahead of time. We heard that the ferries fill up rather quickly so we didn’t want to take any chances. There are also small airplanes that can take you back and forth but they are a lot more expensive. We hope you enjoy! Friday Harbor is one of our favorite places, it’s a really unique island.

    I had the fortune of living on San Juan Island for a couple of years in my younger days, I actually took my driving test there, and worked at the Roche Harbor resort restaurant McMillins. One night my brother and I went out with a few buddies for some underage drinking on one of the guys parents 14 or 16 foot boston whaler (so not a big boat at all), drifting with the current somewhere west of the mouth of mosquito bay . It was just starting to start getting dark but we notice further down the shore line to the west a few boats approaching which was going to spoil our fun... we were just about to head out to another location when feet away a huge orca broke the surface so close that the water it displaced I thought was going to come over the edge and sink the boat. The next few moments we found ourselves right in the middle of at least four or five whales in the pod... the boats that were coming our way were whale watchers following that pod. That was I'd have to say so far in my life the most exhilarating, awe inspiring, and yet absolutely terrifying experience with nature Ive ever had.
    Really enjoyed your video, brought me back to many fond memories.
    I also enjoyed whom ever did the video editing color grading work, especially in the nice deep contrast, obviously excluding the older gen go pro captures, which to me gave that section a nostalgic feel to me, but that could be based on me already knowing the area.

    • @MarkandRad
      @MarkandRad  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow that is one heck of an awesome story! I cannot imagine being in a small boston whaler and have an orca bust through the water that close….hey on the bright side that boat won’t sink haha. I’m very glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for the compliment. I do all the editing and color grading myself. Far from a pro but I do the best I can, and yes GoPro footage is awesome when you need it but hard to push the colors around and good luck getting more contrast out of it but they are great cameras when you need them. Thank you very much for watching our video and thank you for the story, that was really cool to hear about

      @@MarkandRad 1993. And I graduated from FHHS in 1963. I was in the 8th grade when the new building was built. Looking at videos of the Island online, things are so!!!!!!!!!!!! different. I lived on the west side where I could see Vancouver Island from my kitchen window. I miss the ocean but I currently live 6 miles from the second largest river in my state which flows into the largest tributary to the Columbia. But now my state is growing like Washington was in 1990. We have been discovered by California here in Idaho.

      @@MarkandRad I lived there a total of 25 years beginning in 1954. In high school kids couldn't wait to get off "the rock", but after going to college, working, returning a couple times, I began to enjoy it more. One year, around 1965 or so the South End had a U.S. Army landing exercise and the high school girls loved all those boys. There were bleachers set up so the townspeople could watch the landing. In the 60's, there were lots of fishing boats working the Island area. And in the late 50's there was a pea farm in the valley. There wasn't many people living on the waterfront so my dad would catch lots of fish off the rocks and we would go to False Bay and scoop up Dungeness crabs at low tide. Growing up, my parents were always canning crabs and clams and oysters found on beaches. And when in high schools, I and other boys would swim at a deep limestone quarry hole not far from Roche Harbor. When I was 12, I christened a boat that had been built at one of the two shipyards in Friday Harbor. I named it "The Pat", broke the champagne bottle and it slid into the war and when I was 17, I was able to work on it in Alaska where I earned money to go to college. And I got to be on it from Seward to Puget Sound and up and down the Inside Passage several times.This is probably pretty boring for you. Sorry if it is. The lavendar fields and the alpacas, weren't there when we left.
