  • Wishing my dear old friend, Helen Anastasia Anderson, a very Happy Birthday! I'm actually a couple of days early, but who wants to upload on a Sunday?
    This is a do-over. I uploaded my original cover back on January 30, 2011, right around the time that Helen and I became acquainted.
    "Cup of Wonder" by Jethro Tull off of the "Songs from the Wood" album which came out in 1977 and featured the late, great John Glascock on bass.
    I'm playing the Ernie Ball MusinMan Sterling. I always find myself struggling to get a sound I'm happy with out this bass and I've contemplated selling it but, for certain things, it's perfect. I don't think it sounds particularly good in this video, but it's not bad.

    Songs from the Wood was the first album that I ever bought.
    Over here in the UK, the BBC used to do a thing where they televised a concert, and simultaneously broadcast the sound on FM radio. Not surprisingly, they called the series 'Sight and Sound - In Concert'.
    This particular concert was from the Golder Green Hippodrome in London, on the 10th of February 1977. I heard it by accident, whilst tinkering with an old television set that I had been given.
    At the time, Tull had just released Songs from the Wood, and were plugging it throughout the concert. I remember being a penniless apprentice at the time, and the album purchase cost me more than I would have liked...
    I believe that the concert, or parts of it at least, are up on TH-cam.
    Love the videos Sir!

    Another wonderful performance. It's pretty busy, but still serves the song.
    I was lucky to have a chance to see Martin Barre's band play last week. He's almost 80, but that man can still flat out play. Their show is a little over two hours (all Jethro Tull), with a 15 minute intermission. They were terrific, I heartily recommend them. The tour is heading to the northeast in the beginning of May.

      We've seen Martin Barre's band 3 times and he's consistently good. His singer adds a lot, with his voice and guitar playing. Last time Dee Palmer was supposed to be with him, but she wasn't for some reason. My only criticism is that they are a bit more Rock than Prog sounding.

    Nice job TJ! That sounds like it took some work! There seems to be a style to Tull's bass parts (post Aqualung) irrespective of the player which makes me wonder how much of those parts are written by Anderson. (Though Glasscock had a bit more technique than the others).

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Nelson! It wasn't too bad, just needed to brush up on it. Some of the muscle memory was still there. I think you're right, Tull always had a tight, focused bass sound which carried on when Dave Pegg took over. Ian Anderson played a track or two on "Storm Watch". While the part he played may have been "Tull-ish", the execution and sound was not. Richie Blackmore considered John Glascock to be one of the best bassists he knew.

      @@TJH3113 I didn't realize Ian played bass on some of the tracks on Stormwatch so I just checked it out. Obviously, WRITING a bass part and PLAYING a bass part are two separate things. He did okay. But yeah, Glascock is pretty special.

    Troy have you tried turning the bass treb and mid all the way down, then make any adjustments to your sound on the amp or SansAmp or whatever preamp you use? (Kind of making the bass “passive” I guess) play it like that for a while and see what you think, then whenever you want to it cut through or shake the windows… a little goes a lot further. I don’t know if that’s a common thing or not, but I play mine a lot more now, with that approach. Obviously everyone has an opinion, and this may or may not work for you. Cheers, you’re the best Fonzy.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's the mistake I make when EQing these basses... the Treble control. The treble sounds very shrill and brittle to me. Being an active bass I always seem to want to start out with all the controls flat or with a slight boost. Just out of principle I could never use the tone controls as a cut. I totally get what you are saying though and I guess that's why I seem to favor passive basses. I get along very with the Spector basses though. The best sounds I've gotten with my MusicMan basses are when they sound flat, but it's just not how I like hearing myself.

    • @PushSueAside

      @@TJH3113 that’s funny, I was just A/B ing them and other basses, with what I was saying, just into an amp with nothing but a cable into an amp. It definitely wasn’t as “cut and dry” as I thought. It turns out the pedal I always use, compresses it a lot more than I thought. The difference are staggering.

My friend Tim Dailey has an import MusicMan Stingray that he loves. I've never played one so I can't really comment on it. I will say that, while the Ernie Ball basses are great, there is no way I'd ever pay over $2,000 for one. If I were in your situation, I'd find the best feeling import I could put my hands on have some work done to it - a nice fret leveling... hell, even a Plek job. If you still think you could improve upon it then move on to the pickup and such. There are a ton of upgrade options out there.
