Very beautiful indeed. I really like your videos. I'm 57 years old and I only started studying bass a year ago. You are a great reference. Thank you and hugs from Brazil.
You always amaze me with your good ear for note precision and duration. You always seem to pick the right strings and position for the correct tonality for the song, record copy as it were. Plus your memory for where certain riffs fall ain't no slouch either. You are just a great solid bass player whose skills I appreciate and endeavor to emulate.
Aw, thank you so much for the very kind words. I've always put a sharp focus on my hand position to make sure I can make the smoothest transition possible to the next part of the song. As far as "tone" goes, I don't tailor it to fit each song I cover. Generally, it is what it is, but, for this song, I did flatten the tone knobs on the bass which softened it a bit. Memorizing all of the little variations in some of the songs it what takes most of the time when putting them together. Again, thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
Dont worry session players, all thats needed to play on a steely dan track is perfection from Fagan and Becker! No pressure 😎🤟 as always your accentuations are 2nd to none dude 🍻

FIRST EVER CONCERT I went to was in 1974. Steely Dan opened for The Beach Boys at St. John's Arena on the campus of THEE Ohio State University! I was a junior in high school and me and my 3 buddies cut school that day to go hang out at the venue and "Par-Tay" a bit while we waited! 😉 We heard The Dan of Steel doing their sound check and we started do around pulling on doors and POOF, we were in! We sat in the very back and watched for about 20 minutes until we were "escorted out"🤣! Security was very cool and understanding knowing our excitement! The Dan stopped touring for the next 20 plus years at the end of 1974! Saw a little known back up singer named Michael McDonald, Becker, Fagan, Dias and of course Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter before he flew over to The Doobie Brothers! As for the show...The Dan of Steel BLEW the Roof Off and got gave the Fans TWO Encores! I personally the second one was purely to to piss of Mike Love from The Beach Boys as he was standing on the side of the stage and everyone could see how mad he was at The Dan for not wrapping it up! 🤣🤣🤣 The Dan just laughed! I've tried to play this stun many a time and NEVER does it go as planned...it's a tough one for me! Hoping the Darryl Hall and Elvis Costello Booking was a treat for You and your Lynn! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
Incredible story!!! We've seen Steely Dan (and Donald when he did his Nightfliers tour) 5 or 6 times and it was always a great show. That being said, I've seen him/them enough for one lifetime. The Hall/Costello show was a vocal disaster. Lynn and I had a good time... it was a beautiful day/evening and we love the venue, but neither of them can sing anymore. I've never heard anything like it. It was so bad that it was interesting to watch/listen to. I'd read the reviews on Ticketmaster leading up to the show and was half expecting what I heard, but it was much worse than that. I wouldn't even post any clips because it was embarrassing. Maybe I'll put one in my "Unlisted" playlist next time I upload a cover of one of their songs.
Awesome! They were during the outro, "The Cuervo Gold..." region. I think there were two in a row. I hit the notes but it was a near miss. Edit: I was mistaken, it's during the pre-outro at about 2:20
More of this! In the 70s, I was too young to appreciate these gems. Great song this one. I also liked your Hall and Oates cover the other day. In the late 70s and early 80s, those guys were goofy and what adults listened to. We wanted nothing to do with that soft rock drivel! Hearing them now, I think they also deserved much more credit.
Even a lot of the soft rock drivel had real vocals and good studio performances. BTW, I read a retro-tech blog written by a woman in her early 20s. Steely Dan has been her favorite band since her teens. The kids are still digging the good stuff.
You know, I had a person I'm close with through the channel suggest that I do a song by an older, lesser known, progressive band. Really giving it a hard sell. He thought I'd gotten away from the progressive material that my channel was founded on and that some of the stuff I was covering was, somehow, beneath me. I see it totally differently. Since I started my channel, I think I've evolved and opened my ears to music and songs that I'd never given a chance to before because they were pop or commercial or show tunes or just old or whatever. I find as much value and challenge in this material (Hall and Oates, ABBA, etc...) than I do in any of the Rush, Yes, Tull, Kansas stuff I've covered.
Excellent for practicing in the lowest register of the instrument! It doesn't go past the 7th fret. Very nice. Greetings from Buenos Aires and learning from you!
Great job, I've played this one before. It's tricky because it's not the same throughout the song. The band I played it with wanted me to play stuff that's not in the song lol

Well done Troy. Weird, isn't it, when everything is going fine, you get to one of the easy parts and suddenly for a split second your brain forgets to fire a signal to your fretting hand lol
Thanks you very much. I've covered a lot of songs with more going on, but something about this one really gave me a hard time. Usually, I'd keep at it until I didn't make any glaring errors, but I was willing to settle for this.
SD used a lot of different and great professional bassists, but I always liked hearing Walter play bass. Great job, and really nice sound with the JJ configuration. Sorry to hear (literally) your posts from the Daryl/Elvis show. Has Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks been around to your area again?
Yeah, they used a lot of other musicians as well. I heard that, if they didn't get what they wanted from a specific player, they would sometimes bring in a whole new lineup... which makes no sense to me. The JJ setup is growing on me, but I'm curious how a reverse-double-p is going to sound. Jon Anderson is actually playing another show not far from us, but, as good as they were, it made me realize that I'm not that big a Yes fan. They really lose me on those deep cuts. That being said, I am looking forward to seeing the other Yes camp open for Deep Purple in September.
Love those albums. SO CLEAN. Brilliant lyrics (though, never figured out what the line "please take me along when you slide on down" meant). You met Will Lee once or twice, right? He talks about doing a session or two with them around the Gaucho time.
Yes, super clean. I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking for the meaning of that line, but found nothing fruitful. Yes, I did meet Will, but the subject didn't come up. I know he played a song or two on Fagen's "The Nightfly" album, which is one of my favorites.
