Me and a buddy took his old GM A-body that had headers into 3" collectors, then 2.5" pipe with glass packs, finishing with 2.25" over-the-axle tail pipes - and we added TWO thinwall balance pipes of 2.5" square tubing just aft of the transmission below the driveshaft. It works and sounds amazingly like this 8-into-one. Basically we are dumping all eight into the big crossover pipe "chamber" and then letting the chamber bleed hot gases into the two original pipes. The only downside was it was a little too quiet so we made access ports on the glass packs and took all the fiberglass out. That helped a lot but we are considering grafting on a pair of 42mm wastegates blowing out into megaphones for some on-demand hellishly loud noise.
Reminds me of the time I had a J-body Z24 with a factory 6 to 1 header and the rotted muffler deleted. The growl of an old American pushrod V6 sounds surprisingly amazing coming out of nothing but a gutted cat.
It does look odd from this angle. I'll post more videos this season. It just got custom 3d aluminum body. The view from the rear of the 8 into 1 collector looks wild.
sounds insane would love to see this in person what’s the advantage of 8-1 over 8-2-1 or just 8-2? i know for performance headers you want to balance the exhaust pulses so they don’t run into each other 8-1 sounds like some cylinders might do that but i also know nothing about engines unless it’s a briggs and stratton lol
There isn't really any performance advantage, it's more for the unique sound. Combined with the high compression and higher reving engine that I had built, I wanted the power to be there at high rpms so the 8 into 1 supposedly makes more power up at higher rpms than more traditional headers
@@logantylerdavis1 It might be more advantageous than you suppose. Cross plane crankshafts make common equal-length 4 into 1 headers "always wrong." The firing order makes it impossible to work correctly (except for flat plane crankshafts). 8-1 probably works better than 4-1 on normal (cross plane) crankshafts. Looks killer, regardless.
@Scott Hurst everything you said makes sense. I did the 8 into 1 because I like the unique sound it makes. It would be interesting to see what the difference that a more traditional 4 into 1 headers would make on the dyno
I dont know about V8. But on 4 banger it is roughly like this: 4-2-1 header is more power in middle range, 4-1 header is for high rpm/slightly bigger peak power.

Its definitely possible and has been done before. Go to a company that builds 180 degree headers and talk to them about getting one made for your car
