I have a green version of this, I only have the engine and tender. I didn’t realise the light kit was just used on the top, I’ll need to add a PF kit in the same way. That was impressive seeing all the different components of these sets.

I had been receiving the LEGO Shop at Home catalog for years before (2002?) when LEGO announced that they were no longer mailing the catalog to those who didn’t purchase any items. This train really looks kinda creepy, (I’m not trying to say it’s awful) it seems more like a ghostly theme. I know they had the Ghost Train from the Monster Hunters theme, but at some point LEGO started making more detailed vehicles. I got back into LEGO in 2002 along with Star Wars Attack of the Clones (due to the card game boaster pack I bought at a Meijer store) and when I saw the UCS Star Destroyer I looked at the zipper front middle area and I didn’t want it.

Seems like the grey is the rarest. Only cause I never see those. I always remember seeing the brown and green on eBay so those must have been the overproduction or never ordered colors

Black is hard to find as well, but was probably a popular choice

I would imagine that with the separate motor assembly, that this can be converted to RC track/motor easily?… But I guess the RC battery pack would be the problem.

The Battery can go in the tender, hiding the receiver in the LOCO can be done.

I wonder if every version of train was sold. It’s was either mail in or call in. I usually mailed in my orders.
