  • A short video explaining the different types and voltage of track and trains lego have produced over the years along with how to convert the 12v middle rail to fit the 9v/pf track as requesed by Ashton.
    Thank you to all those who watch and subscribe to my videos.

    Very helpful DIY especially if you are serious about official lego train sets that span the different power systems

      Thank you.
      Could probably do with an update now and go through all the different power options there have been

    Thanks for showing you mod. I'm always hesitant to modify LEGO pieces - especially older stuff . But this is something I've wanted to do as well.

      BrickTsar hi. thanks for the reply. i appreciate there will be lego purest's crying as i take a knife to the track but on the bends it is such a small and simple modification which
      a. doesnt affect the track peice in any way &
      b. if done with time and care tolally unnoticeable
      the benefits greatly outway the negatives if you have a layout.
      i am in the early stages of building a layout and would not have room or wish to run certain locos only on certain sections

      Ashton Kendall the hardear part is making it so they are reliable whilst trying to keep and use the original workings. very much a work in progress lol

    I opted to go the other route for adding 12V curved rails to 9V curved track. If you cut out the studs on the 9V rail at the 2nd and 4th cross tie the 12V rail will fit inside the curve without modifying the 12V curve. I'd rather that than to modify the 12V curve as they are more expensive and harder to find, 9V curves are plentiful and cheap.

      Hadn't actually considered that. May look into that when I do the next batch. Thank you

    Another solution would be to put copper strips on the 12v track. This way, no cutting of pieces would be necessary!

    • @TomHadfieldandTJsLego
      @TomHadfieldandTJsLego  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a good idea but I dont think the copper strips would last very long.
      I have tried it on the new plastic track for the 9v and although it works it does deteriorate after a lot of running. The 12v has lots of little groves on top of the rail which i thing would cause it to deteriorate even quicker with the 9v trains running over it and even more so with the rubbers of the 12v .
      May give it a try though as it would be a lot easier

    Where do you have tot the 12 volt electriciti connector that goes to the 12 volt battery waggon?

    The only reason I dont want to do the operation on the 12v curve is that it is an old piece and it removes value but I can combine all systems so it's a difficult choice for me but thanks for the video!!

      Ashton Kendall im glad you liked the video and thank you for your comments.
      i personally wouldn't think if you remove the two parts carefully and made it loijs nice it woukd effect the price that much as it doesnt affect the part at all.
      it still fits and workd perfectly well on the grey 12v track, the rigidity is not affected, and most people would even realise or care that it had been removed.
      The other good thing is curves are substantial cheaper than the straights which don't need any modification so worse case maybe a few pence of unless the buyer is a complete purist.
      and who knows my idea may become so popular everyone wants to do it and it increase the value lol..
      End of the day. a few minuets work a few pence reduction in price for how nany hours of fun and enjoyment!
      thanks again for watching and subscribing

    Hello, I have a very dear question. I am selling my Lego 7730 to someone that I bought for 135$. He wants 195$ for the set, but is the condition I have it in worth it? Or should I just keep it? Best regards(If I can have an email, I can send you photos of it.)

    • @TomHadfieldandTJsLego
      @TomHadfieldandTJsLego  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashton Kendall hi Ashton. i would personally say $190 is a little low depending on the condition. the red 12v motor is very rare and worth over $100 on its own. happy to look at any pics and help price it the best i can (von_hadfield@hotmail.com)
      regards
      Tom

    How are the trains controlled?

    • @TomHadfieldandTJsLego
      @TomHadfieldandTJsLego  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mort Schubert Hi. They are all controlled either by 9v or 12v mains controller so the 9v and 12v trains can be controlled separately on the same peice of track

    • @mortschubert3909
      @mortschubert3909 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the very prompt answer!
      Does that mean that they can be controlled separately even when running at the same time?

      P.S. While watching the video, I was thinking that the extra plastic could also be removed by melting it away. It seemed to me like a much faster way. And you showed that! Now, I do not know which worked better for you: cutting or melting? Time and effort are important when you have to adapt tens, or maybe even hundreds, of pieces.
      The idea shown in your video is great for anyone who wants to combine the different types of track they have - and are fond of.

    • @TomHadfieldandTJsLego
      @TomHadfieldandTJsLego  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mort Schubert Glad you liked my ideas.
      The cutting I suppose is a neater option but takes a lot longer and like yourself I've had a few 100 to do.
      As for the running yes the 9v and 12v can be run completely independently of each other on the same peice of track
