I’m not sure what LEGO sold or didn’t sell in the U.K. in respect of “trains”. I don’t even know if “my own train” was a thing here either?
We did purchase set 7725 for our son. Brickset says it’s from 1981. Matthew would’ve been 2 years old then and I’m sure we didn’t buy it until he was 5 or 6, and new from a toy store. I guess production ran for a while and we may well have bought it as new old stock?
We found it in my mothers attic a few years ago. Still in its box and with all the inserts and even the sticker sheet, which was complete apart from the British Rail stickers. The transformer was missing, but I’m sure it’s somewhere in the attic in it’s own packaging.
The set now resides in Hannover, Germany with Dylan, our grandson.

I'm sure you guys are able to talk forever about these thoughts.... In my opinion LEGO probably had looked at sales vs consumer data and decided that the train theme was a short lived life expectancy with kids. It's a Christmas gift and in a week or month it goes into the closet forever! I wonder what LEGO meetings are like about new ideas and outlook for the coming years but I wonder if they said either we improve trains (bigger curve radius, etc) or trains are put on the back burner forever, and it was probably too early for the Brickworld/AFOL community to really make a serious impact until maybe 2010-2015 because I noticed over the years that LEGO has improved some things but still lagging on others where only third party sellers are able to profit from. I just wasn't willing or able to be imaginative enough to buy some LEGO trains when I got back into LEGO in 2002 to realize that I can do something great with these sets.
I agree LEGO did not want to be in the model train business. One and Done Train Sets, every few years.
