Petersburg battlefield was our play area in the 60’s . We ran up and down those earthworks playing army. I haven’t visit the battlefield since my mother passed away in 2010. I use to take her to see the deer walking around the battlefields . We loved driving through. I love reading about the battles and seeing where it happen.

Will Greene is one of the best. I had taken > 20 tours with him. Not only is he very knowledgeable and explains things very clearly, he is a great guy. He was the former head of Pamplin Historical Park & the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. He's published the first of his 3 volume series of Petersburg.

Only go to Battlefield Park and Old Town. There is a historic cemetery on Crater road, other than that crime runs ramped throughout the rest of town.

I give you men a lot of credit for climbing that hill!!! Very effective in giving me an idea of just how arduous it would have been to do carrying a rifle, equipment and under fire! Thanks

Without your meticulous descriptions, it would be impossible to understand the battlefield. Thank you so much. Very captivating!

We live near Petersburg, driving on Rt. 36 past Ft. Gregg-Adams (old Ft. Lee) you go through a stretch of woods. I now think these are the woods you walked through in this video.
    Thank you gentlemen.

I lived near Buckner street as a child & played in the remains of old earthworks. Petersburg started my love of American history. Later lived near the Richmond KY battlefield. I loved your tour of the battlefields of the Kentucky campaign but this tour of Petersburg is outstanding. Makes me want to return to Petersburg for an extended visit. Great work by Battlefield Trust.

Enjoy all your tutorials very much. Also, we Civil War buffs down here appreciate all you folks do to preserve the legacy of the battlefields where so many made the ultimate sacrifice. Mr. Green is superb.

    A. Wilson Greene with his riveting commentary seems to be the logical choice to pick-up the oratorical sword of the legendary Ed Bearss.

Battlefield is nice, spent a lot of time there, Petersburg on the other hand is not such a good place, lots of sketchy areas. I'd recommend if coming here to stay in the Heights(Colonial Heights) or Chesterfield, Petg is close by. There is a Old Market area and historic cemetery on Crater road as well. Richmond is a thirty mins away with more history.

Yes,the trees do tend to cloud the understanding of the lay of the land so a map would be very necessary I think to stay oriented as to where you are.

These videos made me look at the battles map and dates of battle and it seemed they spend the summer trying to take the Petersburg junction instead of cutting supply lines in a ring around the city. It was not till August they got due south of the city and they got the Confederates out of their forts but they lost Reams Station and withdrew because it appears they were treating cutting the supply line outside the city as a side show. It seems it took until 1865 to get serious about cutting off supplies and making that their focus instead of frontal assaults on the city fortress.

I reckon this is closer to what The Wilderness looked like in 1864 than Petersburg did.
