I live in Trinity NC. We have a civil war trail marker at Braxton Craven school where Trinity college once stood but was later moved to Durham NC and became Duke University. It states that Gen Hardee made his final camp in front of the main building where I attended school. Thanks for featuring NC.
I want to see the Bennett House badly. I am a reenactor and the unit protray the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Washburn Lead Mine Regiment ( Galena, Illinois) 17th Corp 3rd Division was with Sherman at Johnson surrender.
All of your videos I have watched so far have been excellent!! I am amazed that you are able to convey all the information that you do without any notes!! Thank you for all your hard work to preserve these sites and create these videos for us here on TH-cam!
I'd lost track of the fact that President Johnson rejected the first draft of the surrender because it was too lenient. As favorable as he was to the South, that first draft must have been an outrageous betrayal of all of the sacrifices the Union troops had made.
I believe the 3 sons that you mentioned were Samuel, Elisha, and Nathan I believe. They're my great great great relatives. I'm need after rather my great grandfather or my my great great uncle David Bennett

Thanks.
There is a story that when Jefferson Davis was on the run he had stopped in this North Carolina town and had told the people of the town of Lincoln's assassination and death, who knows what the reaction was.also Sherman offered better terms of surrender to Joe Johnston but secretary of war Stanton was totally pis**d at Sherman. When the Union armies marched in the victory parade in Washington d.c. a month later Sherman would not shake Stanton's hand
Really well done presentation. So good to see an American Battlefield Trust presenter that hasn't got arms swinging every which way exhibiting continual spasmodic behavior.
Davis had lost his mind. But I knew that when he lost two major battles within one day and didn't seek to end the war. I send kids into the war, yea that is what I'll do. Who else did that, a guy in Germany. The other thing is Lee's Infantry surrendered, his Calvary and Artillery got away, if my memory serves me.
I´m from Venezuela. My name is Carlos. I saw this video, but I don´t like it too much, because, there are no too much information about why, does Joe Johnston had to surrender?
Hey Carberto, maybe I can help you. I teach American history in high school here in the US and I love to study about the Civil War. I am in no way an expert on Joe Johnston's army. However the situation was that that Confederate States of America was falling apart by the time Johnston and Sherman meet at the Bennett Farm. Robert E. Lee, who is most known, surrendered his entire army April 9, 1865, after trying to delay the Union from taking Richmond, the Confederate capital, which fell on April 2. Union Armies were coming from all over the south towards Johnston's army, so we was quickly becoming surrounded. The Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, seemed to want to take what's left of the army into the mountains and fight a guerilla war with no clear endgame. However, Johnston was fearful of such an extended conflict. Furthermore, as he was becoming surrounded, the ability to feed and arm his army was because more and more difficult. At that point, with the capital gone, the president and the leadership on the run, Lee having surrendered, and little hope for supplies or relief, Johnston felt his only alternative was to surrender. I hope that helps.
Nice video. Thank you. I can see why Wade Hampton wanted to kill Kirkpatrick if he's the guy who hanged the poor single soldier in Raleigh who stood up to the Union soldiers. What a creep!
The union was always going to win the war of attrition, there wasn’t much of a doubt. Plus 90% of the battles took place on southern ground, huge advantage knowing terrain and local support. A defenders paradise. Most of the battle sites the Rebs crisscrossed hundreds of times, there were many accounts also of locals wanting the Rebs out of Virginia they said they were like lice always coming back! When the north went south early they didn’t do well, when the south went north they didn’t do well it’s not a coincidence. Lee was amazing, I think Jackson was overrated when you go back and research Jackson lost every battle he fought against an A grade West Point trained union general! Jackson could maneuver for sure! The Reb army was good but one thing they were exceptional at was killing its own generals. That in itself says a lot about confederate subordinate officers that they weren’t trusted by lieutenant and major generals they they had to ride out in front of their own line and do reconnaissance.
I know about this event. I've never read about it. This is the most I've learned about it. Thank you
You guys are literally the best. Kris, Gary, the whole crew. All fantastic! Love the content. Love being a member of the Trust!
Imagine being so miserable that you have to put a "dislike" on this great video series.

Thank you for the great videos, your narration is excellent.
My great-great-grandfather, Pvt. Columbus M. Johnston, 7th Florida Infantry, was part of this surrender.
Another great series! Thank you so much for bringing to light so much of our forgotten past.

Fun Fact: General PGT Beauregard was Surrender with Johnston.
My G-grandfathers unit, 8th Va., had its dress flag made from Mrs. Beauregards' donated wedding dress.
Now I get how the civil war end. Thank you.
Well done I enjoyed that
Marvelous!
Bennett Place also has a great TH-cam page... btw

who cares? Live your life and have a meaningful existence. Don't live off the events of your ancestors.
Actually the two sons' names were Lorenzo and Alphonso. The son-in-law was Robert Duke who was the younger brother of Washington Duke.

Beauregard is buried couple miles west of delacroix.( At a place called the end of the road )
Remember, mounted troops are called CAV- alry. Not CAL- vary... Jesus died on Calvary. Custer died as a member of the cavalry ...
Why is the sky blue?
Because God loves the Infantry.

I agree. I wish they would calm down.
Very interesting.
Cavalry. The "V" comes before the "L." Calvary is where Jesus died. Cavalry are horses and men. Thanks for a great video.
Garry you need to take Chris to see your milner 😂❤😎

Cause the gig was up. Southern armies couldn't be supplied. Hard to win w/o bullets and food.
Rather than assisting Charlotte's hard-working business owners. Grus wrecked their lives and everything they'd built.
