17th Maine was my great grandfather's unit. Enlisted at 16 as a drummer. After WIlderness he was carrying a Springfield.

My 4th great grandfather, John W. Dissinger was in the 5th corps, 3rd Division, 3rd Brigade during this battle as well as numerous other battles in the Army of the Potomac. It’s a humbling feeling knowing your family participated in this part of our history.

My GGG-Uncle was killed at this battle leading the 105th Pennsylvania. Thank you for highlighting this often forgotten battle.

Meade is my great hero. Always profoundly responsible and capable.. So many officers on both sides would just leave the battles run and even with reports just not see what was transpiring. I also think the Topological Engineers, Meade was one, deserve a much more featured role in Civil War and general subsequent history. Although a sidebar I think the quality of your presentations might get them some relevant notice. Thank you for your efforts.

Where was the "Bull Ring" I have the Regimental History of the 124th NY and they were part of the 2nd Corps at this Battle. They mention fighting in an area called the "Bull Ring" or am I getting this mixed up with the Weldon Rd?

You compare the pace of this with the Atlanta campaign, Sherman tried frontal assaults but quickly worked his way around the edges and they abandon the city in a little over a month. In this case they spent a month doing frontal assaults and it appears they followed it with a molasses campaign of encirclement that allowed the Confederates to build 5 miles of works down this road. Looked at a Petersberg battle map with the lines drawn in and it looks like a WW1 map with parallel lines extending in a south and west direction out of the original Petersberg defenses.

That woman that the Yankees saw "3 times as a ghostly figure," was there a battle fought here during the revolutionary war or the war of 1812?

I can’t stop thinking about that house and how the rain water would flow off the roof down that dormer and onto the heads of everyone who used that door. Lol
