Season three felt in many ways like it was the unrealized Mulholland Drive series...the gangster brothers, the use of an amnesiac as the protagonist, etc. The absence of Annie really did seem weird, given that her fate was literally the question season 2 closed with. Sometimes I like to think that the real Coop actually went back to Vegas to live with his new family, and sent the tulpa to do the rest of the job, though I don't think the show really supports that reading.

I agree with you there. I think the flow from Mulholland Drive into Season 3 is similar to how the original Twin Peaks flowed into Lost Highway. And that there's kind of a continuity to it all. BTW I just realized I never replied to your comment from awhile back on my Halloween vid. Remedying that now.

You may know this already, but the Dougie part of the series was supposedly adapted from an unproduced Lynch screenplay called “One Saliva Bubble.” Also, great video as always. To quote Hawk: “There is also a legend of a place called the Black Lodge, the shadow-self of the White Lodge. The legend says that every soul must pass through there on the way to perfection. There you will meet your own shadow-self. My people call it The Dweller on the Threshold…but it is said if you face the Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.” In an abstract manner, I believe this is what occurs to Cooper throughout The Return. As you illustrated so well, each Tulpa created is a piece of his humanity which is lost.

Great video as usual. How Lynch and Frost portray women in the series, film and books is a long conversation, and you raise one of the key questions - was Cooper repeatedly harming them in his efforts to achieve his assigned and personal missions.

Mulholland Drive is Lynch's masterpiece. It's an absolute perfect mix of his best qualities as a filmmaker: emotional performances, mind-bending meta narratives, expert manipulation of the audience, absurd humor, mystery, romance, horror, arresting visuals, and surreal dream imagery. Just the right balance of traditional narrative and art-house experimentation. My favorite feature length Lynch film, hands down.

Good summary . The fact that Janey Es ring turned up in the body of Major Briggs also supports your Mr C long game theory. Its also possible tho , that the REAL Cooper is the one who returned to Janey and Sonny Jim and it is the tulpa that travels to Odessa . His behavior in Judys Diner is very unCooper like and suggests there may have been another switch. The good news is that we will never know for sure!

I think Cooper cares for Janey-E and Sonny Jim the most, because they are a family. When Cooper took Dougie's place he immediately felt at home. Janey-E is his only equal. She is indeed strong, warm, loving, determined and ressourceful. She's able to take over the wheel when needed. I guess, the Dougie tulpa of good Cooper would be more like Dougie but with the good qualities we see throughout season 3 so that he fits into the family and in his life as insurance agent. Also, though we as the viewers are reassured time and time again that The Return is about Laura, who is the one, her place is empty and it seems more fitting that The Return is about Cooper coming home to Janey-E and Sonny Jim.
Coopers relationship with Diane seems merely platonic, like she is a very good friend whom he tells everything including about his love life. Then episodes 17/18 make it look like they have a special, pure, loving and even romantic bond, but they're also more like colleagues? But in any case, Diane in these episodes doesn't feel like an equal, and consequently they drift apart, whatever it was they had. And his attempt to bring Laura/Carrie back home seems to have the most painful and pathetic outcomes. Cooper may have good intentions as opposed to Mr. C, but he has no heart, is ruthless, and in a way he is Mr. C.

    • @robertbusek30

Marvin - Janey-E represents the life Cooper wants, but thinks he can’t have. Perhaps, in an off-camera switch, the real Cooper went back to them and the tulpa created “for Janey-E” went on to deal with Laura, etc.

    • @MarvinFalz
      @MarvinFalz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Unforunately, either way he seems to have lost everything in the end, after that time line change and after having sex with Diane. He could have chosen life with Janey-E and Sonny Jim, but he chose death with Laura/Carrie out of duty for a supposed greater purpose.

Yes Reunited Coop does use Laura, but for a greater purpose. His endgame is not to save Laura anymore. It is clear that Fireman sent Laura to earth as a countermeasure to Judy. She is a weapon against Judy. And Coopers goal is to use this weapon. It might not be fair to Laura, but there are bigger stakes involved. Judys existense on earth is corruptive to all, as seen many times on season 3., just like the possessed kid in the car.

I watch the Return at least once a year. I just completed my 5th viewing of it and it only gets better and better. I go a little deeper each time. It truly is like an onion with so many layers. This time I viewed it with the theory in mind that certain scenes are dreams of certain characters, or possibly from an alternate timeline and it really enriched the viewing experience yet again. There's still so many unanswered questions and I'm obsessed with thinking there's clues to their answers I'm missing. And with each viewing it seems like you get a little closer to understanding. This time I definitely noticed if you follow the phases of the moon, it does seem to skip around at times which may be a clue to the non linear timeline theory.

did you ever notice that in The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer BOB (possessing Laura) says word for word "I don't NEED anything. I want things."? It blew my mind when I read it recently. I think that undermines your theory that BOB isn't pulling the strings in season 3, altho Mr. C does act super different from Leland. I think thats because BOB kinda takes on the essence of his receptacle. Leland was a little boy when he got posessed whereas Dale was a super organized extremely calm rational detective so the entity manifests differently. Love your videos SO much you are the Twin Peaks season 3 authority I think hands down. Kudos

My best guess, going back and watching The Return again, is that there was something unique about Cooper's relationships with both Diane and Audrey and that Mr. C was aware of this - causing him to lock both of them away in weird sideways dimensions or wherever.
Audrey was definitely stuck in some kind of Lodge-adjacent place due to the sounds of electricity when she looks herself in the mirror as well as the backwards-playing band after she does her 'Dance'. Diane too was stuck in Naido form, for some reason, without the ability to see or communicate.
It's my estimation then, that Mr. C knew only Audrey and Diane possessed the ability to help Cooper engage in the crazy love/sex magick ritual that was needed to breach dimensions and find Judy. Annie wouldn't do as Cooper was only drawn to her because she was a damsel in distress and he didn't have an ultimately deep connection with her. Maybe? But then Mr. C doesn't even know who Judy is. Does he? Is he asking who Judy is because he doesn't know, or is he asking who Judy is CURRENTLY - as in, who has she possessed? That seems likely due to his coordinates leading to the Palmer house.
    It's hard to know what's what. :D

Maybe my favourite mystery on season 3 is Audrey. It seems to me she's is a different reality than the others TP characters. In a time of 25 years a lot can happen. I'd like to believe that Audrey is the one who founded the glass box. Right after season 2 Mr C. took off and went to Audrey, and it is quite asumable that he raped her in her coma. But what if he did not? Maybe he waited until she woke up, told her that she was always the love of his life. They started a family, hidden from the rest, and after a while Audrey noticed that there was someting terribly wrong with him. She started her own investigation, and visited his former girlfriend in the mental institution. The only thing she declared was that the good Dale is in the lodge and he can't get out. So things ended up in building the glass box to welcome the good Dale when he arrives (possibly she had help from giants maybe or other lodge entities). Mr C. found out, and put her in the reality where she is in now.

More than "why Cooper did not give a damn about Audrey and Annie" I would say why didn't Lynch give space to them.
    ATTENTION PLEASE, LONG POST FOLLOWS.
As we know, TP hadn't an easy life, for a while in the season 2 Lynch abandoned the project.
We don't know what happened to Audry an Cooper don't know either, but we know that in the beginning the story of Audrey in The Return was totally different, we know Lynch got mad when he had to change the script but in the end he accepted it.
The same thing can be said about Annie, as far as I know, I don't think Annie born from the hand of Lynch and Frost, that's why Lynch didn't want to continue his story in season 3 (but Mark Frost did tho).
Annie's task was one, or rather telling to Laura what write in her diary, once she has done her task she can safely disappear from the scenes, she did her job.
Beyond Life and Death also had a completely different script (google it, you can find it) and I think that the Annie's storyline would have finished if Season 2 had a real end and not brutally interrupted.
Also FWWM had no easy life, the film (script and scenes included) came out in a really short time, in few months it went out in the theaters so we have to consider this thing.
The final cut of the movie was also particular and if it wasn't for the Missing Pieces we missed some crucial part, ex. Phillip Jeffries in Argentina. Talking about Jeffries, this I think will answer the question "Why didn't Coop want Laura to take the ring?"
Returning to Mr Jeffries, in the final cut of FWWM we see Agent Desmond disappear, and in the same time Jeffries appear (and disappear) in Philadelphia. When did this happen? In 1989 as Jeffries said? Impossible, since Desmond has gone in 1988 so what's wrong here? Simple, financial issues and a brutal cutting made Lynch makes this kind of errors (you can also check the script of FWWM on internet, and as you can see the two things happen in different times)
    So, The Ring, right.
For what I can say, it is also a Lynch mistake, or maybe Cooper really didn't know what The Ring do, he think it's bad 'cause came from the Lodge.
I think Twin Peaks is also this, that there is no clear separation between good and evil, and Beyond Life and Death
Anyway, really damn good video! Love how you connected Mulholland Drive with Twin Peaks, bravo
(p.s I hope I haven't made too many grammatical errors)

I firmly believe that Sonny Jim IS Dougies biological son, therefore by proxy being Dale's kid as well... this is based on how Dale (Dougie) cries when looking at him sitting in the car... he recognizes his own blood, and he hasn't yet reached the point where he can express it properly... or even fully understand it.
I think that Richard Horne is essentially Coops son, also... in a roundabout way, due to his biological father being Mr. C.
Both Dougie AND Mr. C are "one and the same"... meaning they are both Dale Cooper.
Man, to see them interact... or to even see Dale being made aware of Richard, and how he was concieved... dreams.

I would have paid a nice amount to see Mulholland Dr. series. Then again I would have paid a nice amount to see anything from David Lynch that isn't Rabbits. It's pretty sad that amazing artist have to fight to get money on their original projects. We truly need better ways to pay for our entertainment than either watching adds or paying for subscription fees.
There are many possibilities that at the moment are not quite reasonable but may be in the near future. I really hope so, or we are stuck in the loop of getting trash that just gets the maximum audience but which doesn't really offer anything to anybody. I don't even dare to think what happens after the streaming service wars end and those couple that survive won't have to compete anymore.

Dougie represents Mr. C’s “needs,” both good and (mostly) bad. By purging them through creating a tulpa, Mr. C is left only with “wants.” Perhaps that is the key to understanding the symbiosis between him and BOB. If BOB can take control by fulfilling “needs,” he doesn’t have what he needs to seize control of Mr. C.

  • @jayson42056
    @jayson42056 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You’re suggesting that Audrey and Diane were cast aside while “The Good Dale” woke up and realizing he’d have to give Janey and Jim a Tulpa to replace Dougie, that’s he’s not truly the Good Dale ...he’s a merged light/shadow self? I can agree with after he lost Laura, the shadow was in control. If Mr. C was the dominant side of him, he’d be numb to the fate of Laura Palmer. It’s an amalgamation of Dale’s that is undefined and whichever suits your interpretation, is correct. This is David Lynch. It’s Chutes and Ladders, not checkers. There are many angles and levels to the finale. It’s purposely left open to interpretation. Lynch believes “to explain” is to fail. I like the Mulholland Drive connection although I think the connection is how in Lynch casts his regulars. Kyle, Laura, Naomi...they’ve been casted as characters which share a vast amount of traits. Geoffrey Beaumont fashions himself to be quite the detective;and takes Sarah as his sidekick. Sound familiar?

My current theory about why Janey-E was attracted to Dougie is that Mr. C probably seduced her himself; and then, during the car accident (whenver that was), he switched places with his tulpa. I know he was beastly to Audrey and Diane, and he generally treats women like crap, but he's not awful to Chantal, who seems to actually like him. After all, even though Janey-E is plucky and tough and resourceful, she's also pretty materialistic, and his apparently limitless wealth might have been enough to initially attract her, especially if Mr.C learned to curb his sexual behavior a little (and I think he did). I'm not sure whose son that makes Sonny Jim, but he seems emotionally young for his size and age, so I'm guessing Dougie the Tulpa. (Can female tulpas get preganant? I guess that follows if male tulpas are fertile. Yikes). Thank you for making me laugh, and (most importantly) making me think. X0

I like the theory that Diane has many tulpas and not just one. So, do you suppose that the real Diane is in the lodge? I've wondered about that.

Jami - Maybe the Dianes we know from the series are all tulpas of the original tulpa that inspired the Blue Rose Taskforce...

Look at the phone in the hotel scene when he wakes up as Richard. No cell phones. It's past. And Carrie is in the wrong timeline shes not in the right spot in time that's why she disappears. It's 1999

I've been thinking about the "two birds with one stone" clue given by the Giant (The Fireman). The stone could refer to the ring, specifically the green stone adorning it. The two birds? One may be owl-related, the other to a woman (a "bird", in sixties parlance). Sorry, it's nearly 4 am for me right now and my brain isn't able to finish the thought.

My question would be - do women really need rescuing by men? Laura wore the ring - against Cooper's advice - and she was 'right'. And did Janey-E really need 'saving' by a white knight? She may have hard a hard life but she lived it on her terms and was a hard-ass women who took no crap! (She might have lived on 'Lancelot Court ' but I think this is more of a reference to Cooper's obsessive need to rescue 'damsels in distress' than any statement about her need to be rescued! ) Also, Coop attempted to 'save' Laura in her guise of Carrie Page - but again, did Carrie *need* saving? It looked very much like she had gotten rid of her own abuser (equivalent of Leland Palmer) by shooting him herself! This also kinda influences the Bobby and Shelly situation. We all want Booby in his reformed character to jump in and 'save' Shelly from her fated relationship with Red, but *this is Shelly's choice* and I think Booby knows it. She doesn't need saving (from her point of view.)

Hi WowLynchWow 👋 you kindly responded to me about a year ago when I was talking about the Jumping Man. Recently, I screenshotted a conversation between Myself and the "Take The Ring" channel owner that can still be found in the comment section. Since there's no way to post my screenshot I'm going to copy and paste what we wrote to each other below because I feel it might reveal more into the convenience store and Coop/Jeffries/JM. Youre awesome man, I warn you this is lengthy but could be worth reading. Would Love to hear your thoughts as well-
    Me
"Alright. Long comment ahead -Some things I hadn't noticed in my 3 rewatches of S3 until I watched this video today. I see what looks like a reflection/shadow of The Jumping Man that I've never considered. Look When Mr C begins speaking with Jeffries. Look on his right, our left, I keep flipping scenes between them and I see a reflection of faded red below(JMs suit) and white on top(mask). FWWM scene JM was Directly behind Bob as he sat down and began making noises before Bob spoke. In this scene, the electric light violently flickers and I see red/white on Mr Cs left side.
1988 Philip gets teleported to the FBI and when he refers to Cooper "who do you think that is there", we see a fade-in of The Jumping Man. When the good Dale walks up with Mike, the Jumping Man leaves. If this appearance is a reference his presence, its as if he's in the room from the first time we ever see him in the convenience store and hasn't left for all that time Until Mike and Coop take those stairs.. maybe he himself is deeply connected with Mr. C/and or Bob as a current familiar/vehicle . If that truly is the Same Convenience Store from that deleted scene from FWWM Im seeing ALMOST all of the beings in this same room from different points of view minus a few now that I notice it-
    Mr C (Bob) Jeffries

I tried to copy and paste what he said back but I had to re-edit those posts to even copy paste them. He basically said that hes planning on making a video deeper exploring Convenience Store, Jumping Man and that he noticed the image being "off" as well. Anyway, stay safe WLW have a good one man.

Season four: Gordon Cole meets with Tulpa Cooper and they gamble at the Mitchum casino. The giant makes them rich, Mitchums kick their ads. Or Richard comes back and fights tulpa for Janie-E. Or Cole and the new Dougie rescue Linda, Carrie and Richard.

I always felt that the Janey E character was inconsistent, to say at least. On the one hand there's the tough woman that takes family business in her hands. On the other hand she puts up with the drooling idiot version of Coop, basically treating him just like everybody else. The absurdity climaxed (pun intended) in this ridiculous sex scene, where Janey E appeared to have had the time of her life with Drooling C, even though former Boring C was presumably more capable in bed (because of the working cognitive part of his brain, if nothing else). I just cannot make sense of that, so I'd love to hear opinions.
Thanks for your awesome videos btw! It's great following you down the Lynch hole :)
