Forgot about one of the greatest 4 cylinders, the BMW N14 Prince Engine. 173HP turbocharged inline 4 found in 2007-2010 Mini Cooper S and 2008-present Peugeot 308. Overall, good choices for engines but I would include this one as well since it has a cast block, making it great for tuning up to 400WHP
Yeah many have no clue about mini coopers and are just shit talking of what they heard from others who are complaining about it with wrong maintenance. N14 is my favorite 4 cylinder and it is one of the best sounding 4 cylinders besides the subaru wrx sti 💪🏼
I'll be honest. The earliest versions of those engines, specifically the ones in the Mini Coopers weren't great. They may sound good and put out good power but working on them is a pain and the problems they have are many. Later and earlier Minis had better engines that were more stout and reliable
The KA24DE sounds better to me, but it's more heavy thanks to an iron block. The best thing is it's Torque, acceleration and include a tuning kit (Turbo, Intake, Headers, etc)

@@LucasSouza023 i think it has to do with that they are much smaller and rev higher as you said. And they are tuned pretty high from the factory. Check out the 13.000rpm lancer, it sounds almost like a motorcycle!
@@LucasSouza023 It's because flat 4s and v4s have 2 cylinder banks, not unlike a v8. This also means they have 2 exhaust manifolds and exits. Earlier imprezas before 2007 and all WRXs(even current) also have unequal length headers which merge to the central exhaust pipe and that creates distinctly separate exhaust pulses. This is why most inline 4s sound more like a single vibratory sound, because each cylinders exhaust stroke is coming out of one manifold and it's hard to make the distinction between each exhaust pulse since the intervals are so close together.

I would maybe modify the 3sgte description. That motor is anything but ordinary. The head was designed by Yamaha, and when later Toyota added VVTi to the later generations of the non-US 3sge (NA version), the engine was rated at over 200hp as placed in the Toyota Altezza
real Tylun Porter the problem with that is that boxers are not as inherently efficient as inline engines. Subaru has done very well with them, as has Porsche, but Subaru also can hide the inefficiencies behind an AWD system and Porsche can do so behind the fact that it's a sports car (so gas mileage is less important). So while there are benefits to the flat design, there are many reasons why the boxer engine is not used by the mass market. The companies that do use it have always used it, and at least one company I can think of off-hand that did use it no longer does (VW, unless you want to get technical with Porsche). It's a specialty card. It's like BMW and inline 6 engines. Mazda and Rotaries. Porsche and RR layout. There are reasons that most of the industry has moved away from those things, and reasons why those items are specialties of those specific companies. Also, I hate to hurt your feelings if this does, but weight distribution aside, small displacement boxers are usually far from powerful. Porsche has done a great job but also uses 6 cylinders to make the power they do. Subaru has to use turbos, or add cylinders as well. As a means of comparison, the NA 2.5L in my dads 2015 Legacy only makes 170-some hp. The 1.8L in a gen7 Celica gts (NLA as of 2005 in the US) makes 180 HP (2zz). Boxers tend to be more torquey than ultimately powerful, while inlines actually make more power at the cost of lacking the same torque. But this is where small 6 cylinders come in, as they make more power and torque more easily, are smoother, and usually retain acceptable fuel economy. But then look at the Dodge Dart. The GT model has an NA 2.4L 4 cylinder making over 180hp and 171 torque. That's only 3 less torque than the FB25 in the Legacy, with less displacement.
The 1970s Toyota 12R engine must definitely deserve a spot in this video !!! One of the, if not the most silent engine I heard in my experience with old cars.
I like the little bit of info in the beginning and then the fact you showed exterior and interior video of the cars to give a good, all around idea. Great job.
I have a suggestion that I think should be included on this list or a future list of great sounding 4 cylinder engines, especially N/A engines- is the early Quad 4 engines from Cheverolet/ Oldsmobile. The HO or the W41 versions- they sound great! I had a HO Quad 4 in my 1990 Beretta GTZ- it sounded GREAT! Great rumble & really put down great power & performance. -Just a suggestion-
Why'd you show a Lancia Delta Integrale yet give the details for the Delta S4? The Delta HF/Intergrale had either 1.6L turbo or 2.0L turbo engines and were only ever run in Group A Rally. The Group B car was the Lancia Delta S4 and it was a completely different car from the HF/Integrale, mid engined rather than front engined and it had the 1.8L 4 cyl twin-charged engine. Edit: Also slightly sad that the Alfa Romeo Boxer engine didn't show up here in either Alfasud, Sprint or 33 form (I'm a bit biased though since I have a 1.5L Sprint :D )
you missed out on the Lotus Cortinas and MKI and MKII Escort twincams.... those things dominated the Rallye and Touring car scene in the 60's & 70's... and sound absolutely wonderful
@@kyranoboyle deffo not, the original video is in TH-cam, and it Says that it has straight 6. And you can just hear it, bimmers 4 and 6 cylinders sounds so different, and this one is clearly not a 4cylinder
I don't know about you, but that Taurus really caught me off guard, even though it doesn't produce as many hp, still sounds astonishing, as if it were a mini V8. 6:22 if you were wondering.
@@HoratioFitzbastard Funny story behind it. The concept was based on the 2.0 but the guys at PVO (what they were called before SRT) felt it would not hold the boost reliably enough so they went with the 2.4 that Dodge was using in a transit van overseas. A 4cyl built for punishment with construction and delivery services. Slap on turbo and an exhaust with no mufflers and you have a 230hp to the wheels.
Some more recent N/A Ford engines are just as good as the old ones. Like the nowadays 2 liter engine, direct injection, on the latest US sold Focus, 165 hp, not bad.
If you check the cylinder head on the 3SGE head, you'll notice the "Yamaha" logo. They also designed the 4AGE head. Now you know why they sound awesome!
I thought this video was about the best SOUNDING 4 cylinder engines. Clearly someone has a taste for japanese and some Ford engines. COME ON where are the ALFA ROMEO 4 cylinders including the sweet sounding BOXER?
Usually I don't like 4 cylinder engines, especially diesels. No power, annoying sound etc. But this video changed my mind. There are some really good sounding 4 cylinder cars (except for Subaru)!
I’ve been enjoying your content for a few years now... I can’t help but apologizing for just now hitting that subscribe button! Your content is original, informative and above all else an absolute joy to watch. Keep up the awesome work my friend! You deserve every penny TH-cam pays you!
I hate to be "that guy" and I don't know if anyone's already mentioned this in the comments but wasn't the Lancia Delta a group A rally car and the Lancia S4 the group B car?
I think MINI has some very solid 4 cyl's. With the right exhaust it'll really speak out. My dad's stock roadster S is a talkative little thing. And my base R56 stock sounds decent in sport too. Don't get me started on the JCW GP3 or the 1st gen Mini S.
It could be road legal and could withstand more than one 1/4 sprint, but I doubt it is not rebuilt. That 400HP figure for the SR20DET was meant for a stock engine.
VisioRacer the Boba guys live relatively close by, all their high power engines are build exactly for one purpose, that being low 1/4 mile times (I have that 900 PS Polo in mind). That includes filling cooling channels in the block with resin and so on - those things do not fair well as daily drivers ;) 400 bhp daily is doable on basically every modern 4-zylinder block, with comparably little work. for new GTIs and stuff all you need is a remap, maybe a bigger turbo...run of the mill power
the ej25 is not so great. It has problems with the head gaskat when it is tuned. The ej20 is more stable for tuning because of that it still is in the jdm WRX STi's. sorry for my bad english
Sure and I don't want to hate your video. This video was great, but at 5:49 you write "A great part of automotive history" and I only say the EJ20 is better. I apologize if I hurt you. I like your videos and keep up the great work! :D
Nice selection. But let me be the typical know-it-all and add a few that you missed: - Fiat SOHC or Twin Cam - Renault F7P - Mazda BP - Mitsubishi 4G92 MIVEC - Peugeot XU10 (306 S16) - SAAB 2.3T - Suzuki G13B - Lancia V4 And swap the B16B for the B18C ;)
One thing about the Subaru EJ25 is reliability. Notorious for spinning rod bearings and having ringland failure in cylinder 4. Love the sound of unequal length headers on them though!
I could kiss you for including the engine weights.

I would maybe modify the 3sgte description. That motor is anything but ordinary. The head was designed by Yamaha, and when later Toyota added VVTi to the later generations of the non-US 3sge (NA version), the engine was rated at over 200hp as placed in the Toyota Altezza
VisioRacer Where is Renault 5 Turbo? i think it should be on this list.

real Tylun Porter the problem with that is that boxers are not as inherently efficient as inline engines.
Great job.
Thanks
The Cobalt SS had a good sound n/a Turbo also my 92 Sunbird V6 was great in a world of 4 bangers...
I guess V6 is off topic but it was one of the only ones with a 5 speed in 92 I rather had the 2.0 Turbo but they stoped making them in 91.
That white civic took off! He raised it on 3 wheels once! Hes hooning it truly!
Yeah man, probably the most entertaining part of the video! The way that car moved was art
While rarely modified compared to the others listed, GM's Quad 4 engine sounds really nice when modified.
Alfa Romeo's Bialbero and Fulvia's V4 missing. Such a shame.
and the legendary delta?
Alex Missio look at the end of the video dude
Because he has never made a part 2 for any of his lists...
+galerio995 ok per fortuna! le delta batte tutti!
+galerio995 mancano comunque la 75 2.0 t. spark o la 75 evoluzione 1.8 turbo, la fiat 131, ma non può conoscere certi mostri!
when my porsche 944 ran it sounded pretty great.. feel like that engine deserves to be on the list
Even better with a straight exaust pipe
Next is Best sounding 3-cylinder Engines!
Whould be Bikes like Triumph and MV Agusta.
+FPS_SAVANT fiesta
+FPS_SAVANT BMW i7
+Devin Tariel suzuki cappucino
Volkswagen up :D
1:33 Myeahhh the way BMW roaring like a true dangerous animal is purely eargasm. Lovely
-Just a suggestion-
I'm impressed you found 1, let alone 15.
Where the hell is the 2.3 from the Mazdaspeed3 and the 2.4 from the SRT-4?!?!?!?!
Or the 2.3 turbo Lima engine
Or the 2.3 saab
Or....the 2.2 Turbo Chrysler engines 🤷♂️
Yeah this list is ass.
Great sounds! Unfortunately you missed the Escort BDA, but still thumbs up and thanks for sharing
Honda definitely make the best sounding 4cyl engines!
Lucas Turner NO they dont :-P
their sound is like theyre pretending to be wankel
That boxer though.... 🤤🤤🤤 hands down the best
all these group B rally cars... brings a tear in my eye 😢
I had the 4A-GE engine on my 87 Corolla FX16 GT-S and in my 88 MR2 and I must admit it is a fantastic engine.
Forgot SRT4
Lancia Delta Integrale was a 2.0 Turbo. The Lancia Delta S4 was a supercharged and turbocharged 1.8L capable of over 750+BHP
For your next chapter, don't forget to include Lancia Fulvia's V4 :)
Quico
Ahahahha yeah
aren't you satisfied with the sound of taunus v4?
Agree with Fulvia V4 HF and perhaps the Honda S600
Alexander Klein Yes the Twin charged group B Lancia is waaaaaay above these. Sounds so awesome

you could make a video with only brazilian cars celebrating the olympics. Idk man. Great video as always
You didn't include the Mercedes 190 Evo 2. The best or at least one of them
6:26 That's a Saab sonett 3
11:20 How he shifts gears?
with is mind
I think he has paddles shifting a sequential gearbox
you missed out on the Lotus Cortinas and MKI and MKII Escort twincams.... those things dominated the Rallye and Touring car scene in the 60's & 70's... and sound absolutely wonderful
The first grey bmw was a six cylinder, sounds nothing like a 4
godzillaisnuclea123 yeah it was like a 2.7 6 cyl
2.3L I4 lolll
@@kyranoboyle deffo not, the original video is in TH-cam, and it Says that it has straight 6. And you can just hear it, bimmers 4 and 6 cylinders sounds so different, and this one is clearly not a 4cylinder
@@longhairjon2919 It may be a 325i
9:06 is that a Toyota Mk2? Because as far as I know the Mk2 uses a 4a-ge engine
Volvo redblock and porsche 944 3.0 inline 4 sound so much better than thats..
Don`t forget the VW G40 compressor engine. I had one. Marvelous sound and an amazing little sports car!
I haven't watched the video yet and I will surprise myself but if the 1.8T isn't on here lets just say there better be a part 2
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

+Check Mate ok and you drive.....
Christian Garofalo r32 skyline
+Peter Dank (Monte) yup 1990 gtst with an rb25 turbo
I don't know about you, but that Taurus really caught me off guard, even though it doesn't produce as many hp, still sounds astonishing, as if it were a mini V8. 6:22 if you were wondering.
Alpine a110 ia the best for me, classic and exotic race car
The last alfa has to be one of my favorite cars ever made.
Dodge Neon SRT4. Look it up. One of the main reasons I bought one in the day for how it sounded.
Seriously underrated engine.
Where is the 20xe engine? That engined tuned are freaking awesome, and the sound is mega sweet!
Best sounding 4-cyl and there is not even one Alfa Bialbero!!! Alfa invented DOHC like most of these cars are, Alfa must be mentioned
Great video. Just a comment, the Delta was not a group B car. It came after in WRC
I'm a fan of Ford's 2.0 Zetec-E engine note. 2000-2004 Focus models came equipped with it in higher trims. 130 HP at 5300, 135 Lb-Ft torque at 4500.
Some more recent N/A Ford engines are just as good as the old ones. Like the nowadays 2 liter engine, direct injection, on the latest US sold Focus, 165 hp, not bad.
I have a 1999 Volvo S40 T4. It's a 1.9L 4 cilinder turbo engine and mine has 240hp and 360nm. It sounds great!
4G63 the best 4cyl engins
I think the K20z1 is missing. pushing 210HP and 143 lbs of torque in a N/A engine is amazing. Honda made a great engine.
i love the sound too
0:26 when takumi forgot to change his tachometer
😂😂
Then he turns over at 13,000rpm and breaks the engine.
If you check the cylinder head on the 3SGE head, you'll notice the "Yamaha" logo. They also designed the 4AGE head. Now you know why they sound awesome!
You forgot the 1.5 litre TS engine thats powering the Toyota Yaris TS.
My grandma has this car and it sounds gorgeous for a 1.5l engine.
That Lancia at the end is a beast. What a great sounding engine. Also that Cosworth wow.
Where's the Peugeot XU9J4? Best sounding 4 cylinder ever made in my opinion (along with the BDA)

The Ford Taunus V4 sounds like Ducati bikes!
Volvos B234FT Engine is Missing ;)
That engine doesn't exist. Either B230FT or B234F - and neither sound that good without a proper exhaust
awesome clips. Thanks for gathering
My roommates F56 JCW sounds great 👍

400hp impressive for a 2.0l i4?
Boba tuning´s Golf MK2.
400hp that last longer than 1/4 at a time.
AccAkut1987
Boba´s golf is road legal. and if i remeber correctly, one of them used their MK1 or MK2 as a daily for a while, just to show that.
It could be road legal and could withstand more than one 1/4 sprint, but I doubt it is not rebuilt. That 400HP figure for the SR20DET was meant for a stock engine.
key word "from stock motor", are the Golfs internal stock? Couse i've had 2 Mk2 and know a thing about power with those engines :)
VisioRacer the Boba guys live relatively close by, all their high power engines are build exactly for one purpose, that being low 1/4 mile times (I have that 900 PS Polo in mind). That includes filling cooling channels in the block with resin and so on - those things do not fair well as daily drivers ;)
400 bhp daily is doable on basically every modern 4-zylinder block, with comparably little work. for new GTIs and stuff all you need is a remap, maybe a bigger turbo...run of the mill power
The Civic type R became available in the UK and finally entered the US market in 2016. The Civic type R is manufactured in Swindon, England
the ej25 is not so great. It has problems with the head gaskat when it is tuned. The ej20 is more stable for tuning because of that it still is in the jdm WRX STi's.
sorry for my bad english
Ehm, isn't this video about sound of engines??
Sure and I don't want to hate your video. This video was great, but at 5:49 you write "A great part of automotive history" and I only say the EJ20 is better.
I apologize if I hurt you. I like your videos and keep up the great work! :D
Well, the EJ25 was used in last generations of the WRX STi which cannot be forgotten
Why do you think it cannot forgotten?
Forget about it if you don't like it, but I think it is a good engine
I like the XU10 J4RS used in the Peugeot 306 Maxi, because it revs up to 11000 rpm. I just love high revving engines.
1:13-1:20 is clearly an inline six engine. :-(
No
Yellowfin Tuna its a 6!

Been researching for engine sounds for a game and yes that's totally a V6!
Definitely a straight 6 by its sound alone I didn't catch that. Good catch.

It's Inline 6 swapped.

What about the Alfa Romeo twin spark
Toyota Tacoma's 2.7L 3RZ-FE i4 has amazing sound. Didn't sound zippy at all, sounded huge.
Ford germany V4 engine. Best sounding 4 cylinder engine ever built.
Ford M Garage V4 engines don't exist XD only V6, V8, V12, etc it's V engine cuz it has 2 banks of cylinder in a V shape
Wil Ramos bro you even get a v2 so why won't there be a v4
Clorox Bleach cuz V refers to the V shape in an engine. 4 cylinders engines all cylinders are in a straight line not V shape
Wil Ramos Are you serious lmao?? The ford v4 has two cylinder banks with 2 cylinders each!

One thing about the Subaru EJ25 is reliability. Notorious for spinning rod bearings and having ringland failure in cylinder 4. Love the sound of unequal length headers on them though!
