We breakdown game 4 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals between Connor McDavid & The Edmonton Oilers vs Sergei Bobrovsky & The Florida Panthers. The Oilers FINALLY broke through the wall of Bob & used a 'set play' that gave the Panthers fits in game 4.

I think this was the largest goal differential in panthers history. I might be wrong but I don’t think any version of this team has let in 10 goals. We took our eye of the prize and got burned hard. Oilers burned our nerves off and we will be playing harder than ever in game 5. It will not be this easy to take down the cats.

One win isn't much, but if the Oilers can also win game 5 they will plant a legitimate seed of doubt in the Panther's mind before heading back to Edmonton for game 6 in front of that crowd. If the crowd carries them to another win in game 6, anything can happen in game 7. Panthers need to nip this in the bud at home in game 5, or they are playing with real fire.

no doubt, it's tough but doable. 8-1 is quite the men vs boys display, however. And Florida has the recent 2023 cup collapse in the back of their mind no doubt. Oil needed either G1 or G3 to go their way and for this to be a 2-2 series, in which case I think Oil would be the likely cup winner. G2 was all Florida tho to win both 1 and 3 was some fortunate luck and unreal individual contribution from ya boi Bob. Winning 3 straight is just so much less likely than winning 2 out of 3.

It will still come down to goaltending, in the end and as good as Brobs is, that damaged him. Nieuwendyk did the same thing single handedly to Patrick Lalime in the early 2000’s. In a game 7, Ottawa could never recover. Different circumstances, same principle.

The Oiler's "non-star" players showing up and being put in the equation is the big key to the ALL of the success they've had in the series. If the Oiler's keep Hyman, Drasitl, McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins(to a lesser extent) all on the ice together then Florida has and will continue to shut down their entire scheme. These mixed lines that Florida has no film on, they're forced to adjust on the fly which kills their methodical system. To put it in football terms its very similar to the advent of the spread offense and the subtle merging of Air Raid concepts into it over time; i.e. the 2023 Washington Huskies, they had big talent players that would contribute regardless (Penix=McDavid) (Drasitl=Odunze)(Hyman=Dillon Johnson)(Nugent-Hopkins=Polk/McMillan) because of their systematic offensive scheme. However if a stout immovable object of a scheme comes up, (2023 Michigan Wolverines) they're going to need production much further down the line. Very similar matchup in my opinion although they're very different sports. Florida believes in their system and has been on the opposite end of this scenario before however which gives me cause to believe they'll be on their A game in Sunrise on Tuesday night. Oiler's are down but not out, however I've sensed a level of determination from the Panthers through the entire playoffs that no other team has shown so far. Closest being none other than the Oiler's in similar situations to this, but down 3-1 is significantly different than 2-1, 3-2, 2-2, 3-3 etc. Panthers in 6 is my call, they'll be eager to dash the collective hopes of Canada on Canadian soil. Im predicting Oiler's win game 5 score of 3-2 in OT. Probably mirror image of the Rangers Series but different order. Florida plays extremely well coming off of a loss and haven't lost more than 2 in a row without a resounding rebound performance. They want this more, not just for themselves, but for Paul Maurice. That's another thing making me believe it'll be closed out in Canada, to give the good ol' "F U" to the teams that repeatedly refused to buy in to the mans system of self-accountability which will, regardless of the sport, breeds champions. Play as a team, win as a team, lose as a team, learn as a team and grow as a team. No superstars, no egos, personality is acceptable but only if it's placed after the team in importance. These are the hallmarks of every now legendary coaching system in any sport ever.

They definitely outplayed us in this game and I'm not sure if I agree with the theory that they threw this game to one at home. That being said you're going to have a pretty angry team with one pissed off goalie trying to win the whole thing which is definitely going to be an uphill battle for Edmonton but it would be interesting to see what would happen if this flipped the script and see if the Panthers can adjust. They've been able to do it before but let's see if they can do it against his high flying offense

Ok let's be real here, within the span of the first 3:16s you had Forsling make read errors he had not made all year long. You had Ekblad over think and not just man up and blast someone at the blue line separating them from the puck. You had numerous forward bite on obvious breakdowns instead of simply recovering and playing back on defense to live to fight another day. This was a complete meltdown, but I've seen them do this before in close out games. The next game was never pretty for the opponent. It's more likely Fla decimates EDM tonight and win in 5 than it is for EDM to win in 7.

I think FL's too good to lose 4 in a row, but as a mostly impartial spectator (Rangers fan) game 4 honestly just warmed my heart. Whatever happens the oilers put on a huge showing for their fans when everyone had them pegged as a complete disappointment. Even if they lose game 5, thats a million times better than getting swept at home. Also props to them for at least making this series interesting.

I know less than nothing when it comes to ice hockey, as it is not played where I live, but it has been a treat to see the tactical breakdowns that you’ve been putting up.
That being said I’ve been surprised by how much carry over tactically there is between ice hockey and regular hockey. The simple cherry pick play is a nightmare because it forces a lose lose situation. Because it’s either you give the opponent tonnes of room to do other things and mark the floating forward or you close the space and let the floating forward do the funny. It’s simple and effective. And an utter nightmare for your central defenders of the forwards don’t backtrack.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this final goes the full 7 yards and comes down to the wire. The reason being that the Panthers either have to sack what made them so dominant in the first three games, their stranglehold on the Oilers D and the relentless pressure they put on the defence. Or they are going to double down on it and the cherry pick play means that effectively to borrow from football McDavid and Draisitl effectively become Griezmann and Morata from Atleticó Madrid. Where what would happen is that the oilers will get tonnes of extra chances because they just need to smash it up the rink. Effectively long ball (well puck) Target Man gameplay
And with my limited understanding I suspect that the panthers will double down on their current game plan.
And so I suspect that the next 4 games will come down to if Inspector Bobrovski is Sherlock Holmes or Inspector Gadget (the goofy and rather incompetent bit of his character).
