Easy Riello Burner Repair

  • Easy fix for Riello RDB Burner. This Riello RDB burner was going to lock out as soon as it began firing but by changing the nozzle and adjusting the air and oil pressure it was an easy job to get it going again. In the video you can see what a bad nozzle fires like and the difference when a new one is fitted. This burner is running on Kerosene and is set to 8 bar of running pressure. The nozzle is a 0.6 usg p/h and 60 degree hollow pattern. Danfos 0.6, 60 EH Nozzle.

    ...Ger, you`re a gem... Thanks so much for the inspiration. I took out the burner element which was only fastened with a 13mm nut on top. I pulled it out and had to kill/drill the heads of the 2 screws on the sides to be able to remove the blast tube/collar. I took an adjustable- and a 16mm spanner to remove the nozzle and blew through that as much as I could. But it didn`t help, same symptoms. I did read in my research this morning about a photo-lens. I put on my head-lamp again, tilting the burner element, looking inside where I had removed the nozzzle and detected something like a spy lens back about 100mm inside above at my right hand side. I went to get a cotton-wool tip, spit on it and rubbed the center of the lens and cleaned off a layer of soot. Started the element, but it would not ingnite, stopped it and installed it back into the Grant. All good now. Dirty Photo-Lens in my case. Gerry, thanks very much indeed again for getting me started, subbed and thumbs up.

      Good work, but have spare nozzles available, they can’t be cleaned with air pressure. Also never touch the nozzle screen part with ur fingers. Burner is probably burning dirty that’s why cad was likely dirty. Even if you did the nozzle replacement for a couple years, and save ur self $400 get a tech in on the third year to get his instruments on it and calibrate burner to maximum efficiency. If he can squeeze out another 5-10 % more efficiently, his trip there will be worth it.

      That spy lens ..as you call it, is a photocell. Make sure its not sooted over..it needs to 'see' the flame. Otherwise the boiler goes into 'lockout'. That's the term we used, to describe it..when working on large industrial steam boilers. They used a black oil..like tar...it had to be heated by steam to keep it flowing in the pipes..which had heating tape wrapped around them...they were very similar to that domestic oil burner only much much bigger...the jets were physically the same size..I forget how their rating..there were two of them I recall. There were two the exact same boilers in nestles in tallagh...robey of Lincoln..I think big dangerous mothers

    Excellent Gerry! I learned a lot and thank you for that. I'm not sure it's a job I would take on in case of making some mistake and risking a disaster, but at least I know what to look for. My Riello 40 boiler is doing nothing on power-up, not even the purging, only the circulating pump works. I'll check the power, then try the reset and then see..... I might be calling you!

    only had beckett or similar burner experience.. bought a house with a Riello burner. Wondered about its 20-second fan before it flames.. "the purge" Good to know it's intentional, not due to faulty electrodes or a nozzle issue. Also, now i know how to check pressure. Thank you Gerry!

    Hi Gerry, air setting should be done with a smoke test first and then with a flue gas analyser, newer models getting more sensitive to settings. Also, people should be aware, do not have your heating running when you are getting a fill of fuel, it stirs up all the sediments in the tank, let it settle for a while.

    Hi Gerry, I have a Tranco Boiler in the UK (originally sold by Travis Perkins). It had been running fine this Winter for 5+ months but recently it started locking out. I changed the jet on it and things improved but its started locking out again but it only seems to do when the next scheduled demand occurs. For example, I just went and checked it and there was no lockout light on. I overrode the heating schedule and the lockout light came on but it fired up as soon as I pressed the button. Weird one eh?

    Hi Gerry i have an rdb riello bburner and i serviced it as it was not firing. I cleaned everything but for some reason i cannot get oil to come out the other side of the pump. The only way i can get oil to come out is if i loosen the nut that is attached to the pump that the copper feeder line that goes to the nozzle is attached to. And obviously once i do that there is oil pouring out the threads. If you could help i would be very grateful

      Hi Paul. The gauge needs to be decent quality but something that can handle about 15 bar (215 psi ) You're looking for about 8 bar for Kerosene. Air gauges will work but you need one that's big enough to read. Hope this helps. Good luck👍 Cheers Gerry

I only bought the house a few months ago and the boiler looks very old. Would you have any idea what might have gone wrong? Do you think it would be best to get a new Riello burner? Sorry, I'm new to oil heating

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rick. You probably have it sorted by now but this might help others. Sounds like a bearing on the pump or the motor. Can be fixed but given that it's old you might consider a new burner. They are about 240 euro and easier to fit than the bearing. 👍Cheers Gerry 👍

    Hi Gerry i have a prblem with a Riello RDB 2.2 ,thinks its the pump if i star the pump /boiler it purges trys to ignit sparks etc then shuts
    down ,checked oil going to pump fine checked high pressure side nothing coming out of pump so no spray from nozzle ,
    This came from a friend it was working fine with them could the wirring be different so the solenoid is not getting power or signal causing the pump not to let oil out ?.
    Or if i was just to plug it in on bench as your video would or should it start .

      Hi Alastair. Your boiler manufacturer would have run lots of tests to come up with the optimum nozzle efficiency but that said if you have a flame burning inside the boiler you will get heat output. Nozzles have a hollow or solid burn pattern but again you will make heat in the stove. Nozzles are less than a tenner so best to use the right one. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry 👍👍

      Hi The3wheeler The most common thing would be the nozzle as they are supposed to be serviced and changed anually. Photo cells and pumps are probably the most common problems after that but these burners ususlly go for a long time trouble free. Some of them are in outside housing units and can get exposed to harser conditions with moisture etc. Hope this helps Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry 👍👍

      With experience can do it by eye. Just like cleaning up a flame of an oxy acetylene torch. Not lazy and smoky like a campfire and not roaring like a rocket. A good burn will make the whole burn chamber glow red and not just a part. Set it closer towards the airy 'rocket' side if you are unsure. As this will not soot things up, just be little less efficient. Gray Furnace Man has some great videos on the subject.

    I have a Reillo Series 40 burner that is about 2 years old. We noticed a strange odor from the furnace and I observed the motor come on briefly, then there was a bang and the damper door flew open, then the motor stayed on and after a few seconds the burner fired up with no problems. My service tech stopped by and of course it worked fine while he was there and then misbehaved again several hours later. What do you think this problem could be?

    • @CL-ty6wp

      Delayed ignition. Weak transformer, electrodes gapped incorrectly or maybe flow/pressure issue.

    Hi Gerry, great videos, dub living in sligo here, I have a quick question on this type of burner, we have one installed in a basement where the oil tank is, I noticed yesterday there was no heat, I have plenty of oil, it's not air locked, but when power is on the blower seem to be working but won't fire up, one thing I've noticed is that burn seem to have a lot of water under it, and has water seeping out, any idea what's wrong? Also the last oil fill was October and it nearly February now, so I don't think it's contaminated oil or oil in bottom of tank, any light you can shine on this would help greatly :)

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Reorg. Is your boiler leaking water internaly or from a fitting, maybe the circulating pump? Give the photocell a wipe with a rag and try the reset button on the burner again ( red light button) You could replace the nozzle (€10 approx) and give it another go. Culprit may end up being the photocell if cleaning it does not work. Hard to suggest more as you are setup in a basement and it may be unsafe to fire it outside of the boiler. Good luck with your repair. Cheers Gerry👍

    • @reorg
      @reorg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gerry, thanks for the reply, yeah water seem to be coming from inside it,

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Reorg The steel in older boilers can become pitted especially if there is a leak on the system for a long time. Rads in the house and the boiler are usualy made of steel and if there is fresh water filling the system because of a leak they just rust out from the inside. You may have an expansion tank or an automatic pressure reducing valve filling the heating system and you would not notice necessarily. Still the burner should work even if the boiler is leaking. Like in the video you should be able to run it independent of a boiler. Obviously a leaking boiler is a problem that you will have to resolve but for getting the heat going today it wont stop the burner working. You might need to change both the nozzle and the photocell. Take out your old nozzle and bring it with you to heatmerchants or hardware as there are details stamped on the side. Good luck Cheers Gerry👍

      @@reorg That's not good. Not what you want to hear on a cold winters day. Are there any fittings on the top of the boiler that could be leaking into the unit. Try a bright flashlight to see if you can identify the leak. • @CL-ty6wp
      @CL-ty6wp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      tank isnt pressured. Oil pump located at the burner is what draws from tank. I only really know beckett burners but oil flow is dictated by the burner motor, which turns the oil pump and draws fuel. Some systems have a delayed solenoid valve that stops oil flow for i think 15 seconds when the call for heat is made.
      It sounds your pump or solenoid are bad. Could be motor if you dont hear that kick on instantly but thats pretty obvious.
      If it turns off instantly its a bad light sensor (cad cell) or burner controller box.

    Not all burners should be set to 8 bar. Different BTU set ups and different size boilers require more pressure out of the same burner. One burner can do multiple boiler sizes and outputs. Always get a qualified person to service and repair. Do not stick it in at 8 bar
