    I can't even IMAGINE this film without the choreography of Fosse, the brilliance of Joel Grey, or the perfection of Liza Minnelli, for my money, the greatest Sally Bowles to ever grace the show.

    I remember when the movie came out. She told how there was a German wardrobe mistress. She told the lady the kind of dresses she wanted Sally to wear. "You know, like before the war."
    This woman looked her dead in the eye and said "What war?"
    That was chilling. And the vest she wears in "Mein Herr" was Bob Fosse's vest.
    His choreography was, and is, distinctive and genius. When he danced in KISS ME KATE, you saw it even then.

      Could be a mistransaltion... as in "Which war?" ...."What specific war do you mean? Franco-Geramn War (1870-1871), Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), WWI, WWII, The Cold War, The Gulf War, The American War aka Vietnam War.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Germany

      When I lived in Germany it seemed once every day someone would say in conversation: “Vor dem Krieg…” or “Nach dem Krieg…” The war was everybody’s point of reference.

    I absolutely love the movie Cabaret. For a long time I couldn't figure out if Liza Minnelli was right for the part, because it is clear from the context of the movie, that Sally Bowles is at best a second rate talent and performer. I eventually realized that a genuine second rate talent could not have begun to give justice to the part in this movie. It needed a truly phenomenal talent, as Ms. Minnelli is. And all I can say is Wow. Just Wow.

    I've watched her perform Mein Herr dozens and dozens of times. She's so perfect, so funny. I wish I knew what Joel Grey whispered to her just before she took her place on the stage for that number though. Great, great film.

    In the Fosse/Verdon miniseries, they made it seem that Gwen Verdon had an important say in the iconic Sally Bowles Mein Herr outfit. I wonder if that was accurate....

    Sally had to be "special" according to Liza, but, I also think that Sally had to stand out in the crowd, if you will. I love the complete soundtrack of the movie as well. i had a crush on Michael York throughout the 70's. Shhhh.....don't tell, it's our little secret. hehehe

    "She needed to be special." - the character WAS special, because of Liza's efforts. ALSO, HOWEVER....WHAT WOMAN, OR PERSON PERIOD, FEMALE OR MALE?, IN THIS WHOLE WORLD...DOESN'T "NEED TO FEEL SPECIAL"?! AT LEAST ONCE, FOR SOMETHING, ANYTHING, AT LEAST ONCE IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE? MOST PEOPLE, WELL-KNOWN OR 'FAMOUS' OR NOT, HAVE SOMETHING, A STORY, THEY CAN TELL OR SHOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM 'SPECIAL', AT LEAST TO ONE OTHER PERSON. IT'S JUST THAT MOST OTHERS DON'T KNOW IT, OR KNOW WHAT IT IS. SOME NEVER CARE TO FIND OUT, EITHER. PROBABLY, BECAUSE IT'S NOTHING THAT THEY, THEMSELVES, THINK OF AS "SPECIAL". OR, WITHOUT ANOTHER THOUGHT, THEY THINK "OH, THIS PERSON'S NOT FAMOUS." SO, THAT MAKES THEM "NOT SPECIAL", IN ANY WAY. THAT, TO ME, IS SSSOOOOO, NOT TRUE!! Probably, why I like to watch documentaries, or watch or listen to little-known stories about people or events. I, peesonally, find tales like that very interesting. Whether about a "famous" or "well-known" person, or not. The story doesn't have to be "sensational" or "epic", either for me to find it "compelling", "noteworthy", or even "interesting". Not everything told has to be "sensationalized" to be "sensational", at least not to me. But, Cabaret is a story with "all of the above", at least imho, it is.

    German Expressionists, not impressionists.

    • @kimquinn7728
      @kimquinn7728 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Impressionists' as in the art form. Giving an impression of what they want you to believe you are seeing.
      Why is it called impressionism? The thing is, impressionist artists were not trying to paint a reflection of real life, but an 'impression' of what the person, light, atmosphere, object or landscape looked like to them. And that's why they were called impressionists!
