My dad did the West End run of this and i sneaked in on every performance. This was my favourite - i was 9. I went to a very strict RC school and my mother said ‘ you better not go round school singing that’.
As a kid I enjoyed the Money Money number as well as this Two Ladies and One Man as well as The Pastoral Song and If You Can See Her plus all the other number. Then I became an adult and the whole movie took a different meaning. With enlightened mind, I felt sad, mad and guilty as none of these numbers were to laugh at. This is still a great musical with a sinister undertone.
I was probably 8 or 9 when I first saw this movie sometime in the 80s…I only really only liked the parts he was in, probably because I hadn’t learned about the Holocaust yet, and romance wasn’t a thing yet for me so… I should have been scared, but my 8 year old loves Trevor Henderson and SCPs and Bleach, maybe we’re just weird…well at least I am for sure and don’t mind too much.
I played one of the two ladies in our colleges production of this. I must have been so naive as I don't think I had any real idea of the meaning behind this at the time. Not sure if I should be offended by the casting 🤣
It's interesting how the movie version of the song makes it more about the possibility of the main characters going for a polyamorous relationship by adding another man, making it two men and one lady in their scenario; While as I understand it the stage version has it mainly about the two leads becoming roommates
I like that they are trying to sing in english as germans... I've read that 4 out of 6 female dancers were actually from West Germany where the film was shot... so maybe these ladies are actually from there...
The singing was dubbed - who knows if the singers were Germans singing English lyrics or English-speakers who faked German accents (my suspicion is the latter).
It was 1973 when Cabaret was schon in German cinemas. My mother liver the movie and the music that much, that she bought the record the Text day. She played it all the time. I was 9 and Fell in love with that music immediately. Love it still.

My brother in Christ, I'm pretty sure it was written before that petty war escalated. And we don't know what nationality op is. Plus, it's not the matter of facism since governments are in this for money and territory, and call each other like that as an insult and propaganda tool
I watched Cabaret so many times! It is my favorite movie for everything!!!!! Joel Grey is just incredible..... fantastic and legend!!!!! All actors.... even the tiny thing in this movie is masterpiece. I adore this movie.... Bob Fosse..... choreography... Liza Minneli.... everyththing.........
personally, same! though i would like to see joel gray take on the role on stage, as i think he'd do great at the dark undertones of the character!! his vocals are terrific so i'd like to see it with the actual content and not with the screen version!
In my opinion, the so-called "darker" emcees are actually *less* threatening. Joel's darkness is subtle and subversive. It creeps in without you even realizing it, but it leaves an imprint that is impossible to erase.
I came thanks to the Ukrainian version from tik tok, which i prefer, but this one is also great and i can finally somehow understand what are they saying.
And then after the movie was released, the original stage musical was modified from its original form - and the 1990s version was a whole new concept as well.
Why on Earth is not the song complete? Cabaret is from 1972, are you still worried about the copyright? It should be totally free to see a three minutes musical number. Say more, Cabaret is one of those rare absolute masterpieces that came from Hollywood, it's everybody's duty to see it.
In all fairness, the film version of "Cabaret" is only very loosely based on the original musical in the sense that it incorporates songs from the musical and uses them in context (as stage performances in the cabaret). It's not a musical in the usual sense given that apart from the Emcee and Sally, the characters do not "speak" in song but all songs represent literal musical performances in the plot (as they do in "Victor/Victoria"). The plot of the film borrows heavily from the play "I Am A Camera" which like "Cabaret" is based on the experiences of British writer Christopher Isherwood in 1930s Berlin.
@@OreadNYC I've had a couple of discussions with cinephiles about whether "Cabaret" is a musical movie or not and about the use of diegetic musicand what this implies in the definition of a movie.
