  • (Links Below) For the past several months I've been having a blast using Nikon's new, affordable, tiny-but-capable Z50. I've tested it with it's 16-50 DX kit lens, S lenses and F lenses on the FTZ adapter. I'm shocked how much fun I find both this little camera and the 16-50 kit lens it came with. Here's my review along with a list of things I love as well as a list of things I wish were different.

    Hudson, Great, honest assessment on the Z50. I agree with everything you have said about this camera. It is an outstanding addition to my gear. I took it down to Mexico and left the DSLR at home. Both kit lenses and a Tamron zoom on the FTZ adapter gave me everything I needed to cover any shots I wanted to take. Thanks for all the videos you share with us on your channel!

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@shashwatdas6900 I like to have a second camera that's smaller so if I don't want to carry my 'big' camera, I have something available. It's also nice to have something as a backup in case there's ever a problem with the primary camera. I haven't really run into that situation yet but it's good to have a second camera if the budget allows.

    I bought my Z50 and both lenses the day it showed up in George's Camera in San Diego. I liked it so much I bought a Z7 two days later. I am still putzing a bit with the auto focus settings so I am going to watch your Autofocus motion video next. By the way, I was really surprised by how good the 16-50 kit lens was. Several YT channels did not give it good reviews and was very pleasantly surprised at how good it way. I had the same experience you had in this video with auto getting great back light subjects with it.

    Great review. You pretty much nailed it for me. I'm a D850 shooter who wanted a travel camera and also wanted to dip my toe into the mirrorless pool. It has definitely exceeded my expectations and I love using the camera. Took it on a recent trip and I didn't really miss my DSLR at all, except for low light where I missed having faster glass. The 50-250 performs nicely as well.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the Bubbles profile! Grab that FTZ. There's no performance letdown with the lenses you likely use on the 850. The 35 1.8 or 50 1.8 F's are total gems on it. The 50 1.8 S will pull you further into the Z system. It's fabulous. The Z6 with that lens is a low-light, handheld dream.

    The 50-250mm is no slouch either. The Z50 has vastly surpassed my expectations and practicality. I'd like to be able to set a button to the Magnify function like on my Z6 to help expedite my manual focusing. That being said the Zoom in and Out are more conveniently located on the side of the display vs the Z6/7 bodies.

    Nice in-depth video, thank you.
    While I strongly dislike using small cameras, because I find them irritatingly fiddly and uncomfortable in the hand, I am considering selling my D7200 to make way for a Z50. The reason for this is that I like to take a camera with me on my sports motorcycle and squeezing a DSLR and a couple of lenses into my tank bag, along with a couple of drinks, a snack, keys, wallet etc. is a nuisance and, as a result, I don't end up taking it out of the tank bag to use it as much as I would like, so for this purpose a smaller camera would be beneficial.
    For the most part it seems ideal, it certainly ticks lots of boxes but I was surprised by the ISO performance. I was led to believe that it has the same sensor as the D500 but from your pictures it's clear to see that it isn't even close to my D500 in ISO performance, I mean the amount of luminance noise as ISO 2500 looks more like ISO 6400 on my D500 and at ISO 6400 I still don't get any colour noise, with that said, high ISO performance isn't such a big deal for my purposes (taking it out on the bike and shooting during the day) and it's quite a bit cheaper than a D500, so I can definitely live with it.

  • @FrankNeulichedl

    When I tested the Z50 I noticed that the standard settings in Lightroom where quite interesting --- especially sharpening - with a radius at 2.0 and only 10% strength, while my other cameras have always lower radius levels.

    Thank you for this video and a great channel! Used the Nikon D5100 but not it’s working anymore. Saved some $ slowly based on family budget. Was considering Nikon z50 with 2 kit or should i just get other Z lens for it? As you said on your other video, this camera would be a great start, continue saving for the full frame body later on. I love taking landscapes, travel, some portraits. But it would just take me longer to save for a full frame. Would appreciate your advice.

    Great review, and nice to know that you can shoot birds with this camera, as most other reviews say you can’t. I’m thinking of upgrading my d7000, and want a capable all round light weight camera. I mainly do real estate photography using ON1 2020 for editing, and also like to take a camera out hiking or motorcycling an I find the D7000 too heavy and cumbersome, and lacks low light performance. Do you think this will suit my needs?

    Hello! Great review and it was a big reason for buying my own Nikon Z50. I have one small question though. When the camera is on with the kit lens (16-50), when putting my ear next to the lens, I hear a continue faint buzzing (kind of white noise), it is not loud and the mic seems not to get it. It is not affected by turning off VR or AF. The tech guys from Nikon say that it is normal, but I was curious if you can hear the same in yours :)
    Thank you very much! Greetings from Timisoara, Romania.

    I do have a question about your comment saying the Z50 sensor is not a D500.
    My Nikon friend says the sensor in the Z50 is the same sensor as the D500 and the low light performance is the same. Some say the Z50 is the baby brother to the D500.
    Just wondering if I misunderstood.

      hmmm, The specs are certainly the same. They might, but I just feel like the D500's low light is a bit better. I'll have to test them. I could be wrong. One thing I do know is that the handling and speed of the D500 is light years ahead. It's the last DSLR I'm keeping because its so good for sports and wildlife. ;-)

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the FL ED. It autofocuses fine, but the problem is that for video autofocus, you'll hear and/or see the steps in the F mount lens motors. I actually bought the 50 1.8 S lens to avoid that and have shallow depth of field. The new Z lenses have dead silent, stepless motors to avoid that jerkeyness that comes through in video. You can avoid all that by manually focusing like the pro video guys always do, but for applications like shooting videos of myself with the face detect system running the show in AF-F it was annoying with F-glass.

    Good video. This might be the intermediary way I go from a D700 to Z7ii (after changes are made.) I enjoy nature and documentary style photography and want a lighter camera than a D700. I notice you do not talk about monopods. Are they as necessary with the mirrorless image stabilized Nikon?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I rarely use a monopod with lenses smaller than my 500. And then only in situations where I need to move more freely than my tripod/fluidhead system allows.

    Three things makes me very frustrated with this camera:
    1. No IBIS dispite a hugh space for the sensor to move around.
    2. Flippy screen to the side is much better.
    3. No DX prime lenses for the Z-mount. And no: I do not like to use adaptors!

    Hello Hudson, I hope you don't mind me popping into this video with a question...I am looking for a lens for my z50. I use the z50 for vlogging and I'd like to get something faster than the 16-50mm kit lens I got with the camera. Considering it's a crop sensor, getting a 20mm 1.8 s line would equal a 30mm field of view, would that be wide enough for vlogging? And also, does the 1.5X crop factor apply to the aperature as well? What lens would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, that lens is gold. Yep, I think you could easily work with 30mm and AF-F/face detect. Oh and no, the aperture is unaffected by cropping in on the projection. I have links to it here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks

      The one bummer about the Z30 is the lack of that fabulous viewfinder. It's really designed to pull in vloggers currently working with their phones. The biggest Z benefit for me is the viewfinder. I'm going to review one and do a setup video though. Stay tuned.

    The only thing backing me from buying this camera is the lens Nikon's APS-C mirrorless lens ecosystem. With compared to Sony it's just way behind. What do you think?
    I am confused between Sony A6400 and Nikon Z50.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the Z50 is a vastly superior shooting experience to the A6500 I have. The screen, control layout, image quality, everything about it. I'm sure the Z lens system will bloom fast after the Covid delay, but for now I don't see any difference adapting F lenses to the Z bodies from how the lenses behave on DSLRs, and I've been shooting on Nikon DSLRs for millions of frames. There are some great F mount DX and FX lenses that could get a person through. The kit lenses they made for the Z50 are astoundingly good for now too. 16-250mm (24-375mm FX equivalent) is covered in two affordable lenses that pair well with the body. If you're looking for better quality glass and insane low light performance then the Z6 is the step up. My hope is that they bring out a D500 like sports action DX Z body with insane low light like the Z6 and a bottomless buffer with huge AF improvements. I'd just shoot it with long F-glass on the FTZ. The Z50 is really a shot at the entry level market that delivers quality far above what anyone might have expected.

    I'm still curious about the Z 50 and it's battery consumption. I'm considering buying another one.
    How much usage with or without VR?
    How much time spent in menus and adjusting settings?
    Preferred focus mode?
    Live view or Viewfinder bias?
    Auto iso or Manual?
    Single shot or Continuous?
    Image review setting?
    Focus peaking usage?
    Metering timer shut-off?
    AF or MF?
    Shooting temperatures? (very important, my usage was in 50-28 degrees)
    I maxed I think 400 shots on a single charge. I'm still tryna figure out why my shots count was so low. I'm leaning heavily toward low temps.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't worked with it much in low temps. I have two batteries and I"ve only once needed to switch in a single day. I don't have any detailed analysis, but it feels like it's nearly as good as my Z6 and Z7 which feel just as good on battery use as my D850 and D500. I use viewfinder priority when handheld and really only use the back screen on the tripod. That helps for sure on the Z cameras.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto I'm almost certain that's where it came from. Low temps must've dropped the performance to 300-350 shots. It's just getting into the 50s and 60s for us.
      My D3s gets at least 3k on one charge, I'd get 4k if I wasn't in the menus.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Resolution is pretty negligible, like the D5 vs the Z6. I think the Nikons image quality and high iso performance is better. The viewfinder, build quality and control layout are like the difference between a Yugo and a Mercedes. Just no competition.

    A crop sensor camera with a crop lens does not make the mm size bigger. This only happens when your put on a full frame lens on it. This is per Nikon

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course not. As I say it gives you the same field of view as a lens 1.5 Xs the focal length. You get the same frame filling reach as a 150mm lens using a 100 on aps-c, but the lens didn't change at all. It merely projects a circle, the rectangle you cut out of it is just smaller with the crop sensor.
