    For someone like me, looking to upgrade my D5100, the Z50 with the FTZ adapter for my DX lenses looks like a good path forward into the world of mirrorless cameras.

      If AF is sure enough and zippy enough with the adapter, why the F not? If I had DX lenses, it would be a body I'd buy because it's cheap enough to try.

      It is interesting that no one is talking about it in the youtube realm per se. makes one wonder about advertising money being spent on influencers by some companies and the effect its having on 'reviews' didn't canon mention this fact in their end of year statement? something about changing the way the spend their advert dollars and more to be funnelled into influencers, I think sony has lead the way in that regard. I like this channel - seems to be even tempered and not skewed by company pesos. TH-cam camera channels are something of an echo chamber, find myself culling channels because of objectivity concerns.

    • @scraymond5597
      @scraymond5597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@poniatowski3547 I think that the majority if the influencers are brand-independent, but I do think that many opinions are tailored for the maximum amount of views. Negative opinions do better. We try to stay upbeat no matter what and we're happy that Nikon built the Z50 the way that we did. We love the Sony a7R IV and purchased one, as have some other youtubers. It's flat out the best mirrorless camera we've used. I think if Canon tries to one-up Sony, that will be more effective than trying to buy opinions.

    • @jamesryan1939
      @jamesryan1939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Poniatowski well said. Sony releases an incremental update to the a6300, the a6400, and for three months I can’t go on TH-cam without a review. Nikon releases their first mirrorless APSC camera and nothing. I’m not bashing Sony, but it seems that a brand new camera and lineup from the second largest camera manufacturer seems more interesting than a spec bump on a three year old camera.

    • @poniatowski3547
      @poniatowski3547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@scraymond5597 I disagree somewhat with you in that regard. I too think the A7IV is a benchmark camera, but when a company as big as Canon states that they need to spend more on influencers 'cause that sells cameras I think the proof is there. I enjoy your channel because you guys come across as honest, knowledgeable and genuine - don't lose that. Have a great day.

    I have to say I agree with your review, on pretty much all points. I bought a Z50 earlier this week in a kit with the 16-50 lens and FTZ adapter. I currently own and use D850, D500 and D7200 DSLRs and have previously owned a D7500. Performance of the Z50 is right up there with the DSLRs, especially low light/high ISO which seems to be on a par with the D500 and D7500. In terms of size and format, the Z50 is more like a Micro Four Thirds model and is very reminiscent of the Panasonic GX8 that I used to have, but with the superb low light capability that you don't get with MFT cameras. I have done initial tests with a range of Sigma F mount lenses that I have: 10-20 (DX), 17-50 (DX), 18-300 (DX), 105 macro (FX), 100-400 (FX) and all of them seem to work and to autofocus with the Z50 and FTZ adapter. Be careful, though, there is a long list of Nikkor lenses that are not compatible, notably the 'D' type that require AF drive from the camera body, so my Nikon 50mm D is a non-starter.
    I have no problem using the pancake lens at F6.3 as a number of my other lenses are also 6.3 at the long end (e.g. 18-300, 100-400, 150-600) and I am used to shooting with them, sometimes with pretty high ISO, on the D7200 and D500 in particular. With the type of low light performance the Z50 offers, this is not a real hindrance, unless really shallow depth of field is required.
    I bought the Z50 partly to use as a travel/street photography camera for which is both lightweight and discreet and also to experiment with Nikon mirrorless before committing to the Z6/Z7 family. I will shortly try the Z50 out for nature photography, in comparison with the D500 that I normally use. I look forward to seeing how the AFC copes with 11 frames per second. I have already set up the camera for back-button focus and appropriate focus modes, etc, so it will pretty much mimic the set up pf my DSLRs. The menus are very familiar so it wasn't a chore.
    One note of caution though - I see that the FTZ adapter is limited to lenses weighing less than 2lb 13.9 oz / 1300 gm. I will think twice before attaching my 150-600!
    It's early days but I must say I am totally impressed with the Z50 so far and it is well ahead of my expectations.
    Good review, thank you. I look forward to the next installment.

      I use a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary on Z6 with FTZ adapter without any problem. I avoid holding it by the camera body though, using only the lens foot

    • @dalewatkins9889
      @dalewatkins9889 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A quick question on your last point...the 150-600mm obviously will sit on the tripod holding the weight of the lens, thus I can't see why the weight of the Z50 would be a problem, attached to that lens? Or is it something more 'electronic' that is the issue? I have that lens as well that I use with my D750, thus wouldn't get it if it 'just' won't work!

    • @tonygagnon7073
      @tonygagnon7073 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dalewatkins9889
      Hi Dale. I'll try to explain.
      I am quite sure the 150-600 Sigma will work with the Z50. The issue is about the size and weight of the lens and the torque it can create if held by a single mounting point.
      In order to stay within the weight limit of the FTZ adapter (1300 gm), it would be necessary to ensure the lens is always handled in a way that does not put more load on the lens mount. It is not an issue while the lens is on a tripod but, personally, I find it quite difficult to avoid the issue when mounting or de-mounting the lens to/from the tripod, generally carrying the lens around while attached to the camera or, as I do sometimes, hand-holding the 150-600. I use the Sigma 150-600 C which weighs 1930 gm. If you have the Sports version, that weighs a hefty 2860 gm. I do carry my 150-600 C mounted on my D500 or D850 and they seem to cope with the weight but the Z50 and FTZ adapter seem to be more flimsy, and the instructions for the FTZ adapter are clear, so I won't risk it. Incidentally the FTZ adapter is the same for the Z6 and Z7 so the same restriction will apply there. There is no electronic restriction that I am aware of.
      Users of the popular Nikkor 200-500 (2300 gm) will have the same issue as will users of the two Tamron 150-600 models.
      The other point that comes to mind is that the Z50 body, even with the FTZ adapter included is very light and will not feel balanced with very long and/or heavy lenses. Also, it will not be possible to balance it in a gimbal mount if you use one, whereas the heavier DSLR bodies are ok for that.
      I hope that clarifies matters.
      Tony

    I got the z50 after just a few minutes of playing with it in the store. It's really fantastic, I don't know why so many people are talking smack. One review said the sensor is old from the d500. The d500 had a great sensor so what the problem?

    • @scraymond5597
      @scraymond5597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. It seems like a Z7 with a smaller sensor, much in the way that the D500 is a D850 with a smaller sensor. Obviously, that is one difference. Can't seem to find the problems with the Z50. It's checking all the boxes for us.

    Hi Raymond and Leigh, always enjoy your content, honestly, knowledge and expertise! Z50 looks great! Personally, for me, I think the Z7 is the superior camera as it can offer both full frame and cropped images with ample resolution. Also, the fact that it has IBIS is critical for me. Im older and not as steady as I used to be so it is a huge factor. When I have a body and lens sans VR I can definitely notice a huge difference with camera shake. I also notice a marked difference when using a native lens on the Z7 vs. an adapted f mount lens with VR in terms of stabilization performance. Just my take and thanks for the opportunity! Continued success to you! best, Rick, Phoenix (Ahwatukee) Arizona

    Hi! Thank you for sharing. I spent over an hour to two in the shop deliberating over teh Z50 and Z6/7 for my video production. The Z50 won over due to its light weight and simple adaptation to any gimbal. The video quality is amazing and images amazingly sharp for the price point. I had a ton of FX lens, but end up using the kit lens that came along with it. The FTZ mount bring the flexibility of using the FX lens sacrificing some crop factor, but the sharpness as you have mentioned rightly didn’t disappoint. Wanted to upgrade to Z7 to fully apply my FX lens collection, but after watching your video, I was truly convince to stick around longer until the next better FX mirrorless from Nikon is released. Thank you again.

    That's a brave opinion to put out there. A lot of photography enthusiasts seem to talk down on cheaper gear to validate the cold hard cash they spent on their stuff. I'm still surprised about the quality every time I open a 12 year old photo from a Nikon D40. I'm currently considering a Z50 because my D7000 is a bit heavy while traveling. The only thing that's holding me back is the feeling that they will release a Z70 that will be to the Z50 that the D7xxx was to the D5xxx. So some more buttons, LCD on the top and so on. The Z6/7 are interesting, but I can't see myself really investing in heavy and expensive FX lenses.

    Excellent video. I recently purchased the Z50 about a week ago and I must say so far I’m really liking it. I didn’t purchase any Z lenses but bought the FTZ adapter instead as I have many Nikon lenses. I currently own a Nikon D7200 and really like it but now I think the Z50 will be the one I grab more often. I own my beloved Nikkor 200-500mm lens and adapted it to the Z50 and it works perfectly! Failure to observe these precautions could damage the camera lens mount). Given that the 200-500 weighs 2300 g, I'll just have to make sure I always support it by the lens when carrying it.

    I use my FX primes on my D500, but very much enjoy the 18-55 and 70-300mm AF-P lenses. They are incredibly fast and accurate. I'd like to see how these Z DX lenses compare especially with some moderate fast action shots like your dog running around...the usual. With my 70-300mm I can get the last frames in focus right up to the camera in pretty much any type of lighting. I rarely shoot in high speed sequential though- 7 FPS is plenty. I'm reading that the MTF charts for these lenses indicate about a 10-20% improvement over F mounts AF-P DX lenses. Not too bad. If the Z50 and these two lenses can offer decent AF if not exceptional, then I'd consider it. It is small after all and the 4k full sensor read out a nice touch. No one has really done an extensive AF review yet. Here's hoping!

    I definitely would love to see the comparison between the D500 and Z50. As I shoot with my D7100, I wonder if I'd get better performance switching to FX (D610/750), or keep with DX and up the shooting performance. The Z50 would definitely help if I wanted to transition into any kind of video work, but the D500 would give me better transition with other equipment (specifically the batteries, but also the included external motor for legacy lenses like my Nikkor 80-200 f2.8D).
    I REALLY like the size of the Z50. If Nikon included IBIS, it probably would have been a no-brainier for me. However, the fact that it doesn't makes me think that a D500 or D610 would be a better suited upgrade for my use (especially looking at the used markets).

      As we all know, Nikon (and Canon of course) is at a pivotal moment as each company transitions to mirrorless. I'm curious as to what Nikon brings to the table that can convince the DSLR majority to switch to their new system. I'm excited for how Nikon develops the Z line, but also concerned that they're not doing enough to stand out from a similar performing DSLR.

By adapting f mount you give up the small form factor ( what about balance? The 17-55 is heavy!) and with expensive z mount lenses you are losing out on the value aspect of the camera. Great video.
    I'm waiting my z50 with ftz adapter to arrive. I have a collection of F mount lenses and can't wait to test them. Any ideea how the tamron non vc 70-200 f2.8,sigma 18-35 and sigma 10-20 f3.5 work thru ftz adapter?

      I have Sigma 10-20 f3.5, using it on Z6 for video - it is working just fine. Don't see why it wouldn't work on a z50

      I tried the Tamron 70-200 G2 with the adapter on the Z7, and it didn't work. I mean technically it did, but af was ridiculously slow. Glacially slow. I don't mean it had a two second waiting time. I mean it was working like slow motion. Infinity to close focus would literally take 30 seconds. And yes, I mean literally. This isn't a figure of speech or exaggeration to be funny.

      @@bogdanoros1125 If you're planning to go with adapted lenses, original Nikon glass would certainly be the most reliable option. However, it's been remarked by a lot of people that even Nikon's own DSLR lenses work substantially better on their DSLRs than the Z series cameras, and that one should really invest in the new mirrorless glass for use with the Z bodies.
