    Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it. Let me know if you have any questions about the Z50 or any other camera I've owned. My Z50 gallery will grow quickly once I have more time to go on trips. By later in Spring I expect it will be full of a wide variety of photos because I have a big trip planned in early April. I'm not a pro photographer. I just do this for fun and my own memories (the photos I make).

    great review..I've owned the Z50 for a couple months now and I was surprised and actually shocked at how good it is, especially the lenses...I also have the D7100, which I love, and have crop and also full frame lenses ( used quality lenses ) with that camera, so I obviously got the FTZ adapter also..it was such an easy transition between both cameras..congrats to Nikon on keeping the ergonomics and especially the menu system basically the same..and it is just so much fun to use ! I never leave home without my little baby beside me on the front seat :)..thanks again and cant wait to see more

    I enjoyed your discussion and review of the Nikon Z50. I am excited to be picking up my Z50 twin lens kit next Wednesday in Melbourne Australia and after looking at your excellent photos I am now even more excited! A lot of reviewers have said what great kit lenses they are, but your photos seal the deal. By the way, you live in a great looking 'neck of the woods'. Thanks.

    Hi. Hello from Scotland. And thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts in such a detailed review. I'm looking to move on from my seven year old Canon SX50 bridge camera, and the Z50 looks very promising.

      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for watching and you're welcome. There are many great choices for cameras these days and the Z50 is certainly one of them. The SX50 has a fairly small 1/2.3" image sensor, so you'll notice a big improvement in image quality with any APS-C sensor camera you decide to buy. I'm working on a few more photos for my gallery as I type this. Just got back from the zoo. :-)

      Thank you. Since this is totally new for you, if the budget allows, you might want to look at the Z6 which would get you an even better body with in-body image stabilization and more. Depending on what you need though, it could cost quite a bit more to get the Z6 (just for the body with the 24-70 lens it's around $2,400...unless you can find a Nikon refurbished unit for less, with a warranty). Anyway, the Z50 gives you quite a bit for under $1,000 and that's with a very good kit lens.

    Great and thorough! I was also very suprised with the impressive quality and usability. The z50 makes my z6 feel huge. This camera makes the experience of taking pictures completely different and i really like using it. The image quality from the kit lense 16-50 is stunning and in some ways i think looks better than the 24-70/4. For anyone else out there looking into this camera, dont listen to the negative bias on the net and try it for yourself... its a great camera and 'fun' to use with premium quality all around. Thank you. I appreciate it. I initially dismissed the Z50 and had no plans to buy one because I had just bought a Fuji X-T30 not long before the Z50 was announced, so it didn't seem to make sense to change. the X-T30 has a great sensor and thought I'd just keep it for a year or so and see what other Nikon APS-C mirrorless bodies come (if any). But, the more research I did on the Z50 and the more I thought about how it would be much better to have two bodies that share the same lens mount (Z7 and Z50), it started making more sense. The more info I found on the kit lenses, the more convinced I was that I wouldn't be disappointed. I'm definitely not disappointed. I'm very happy with the Z50 and look forward some day to a higher end APS-C body from Nikon that might have IBIS and a slightly larger body with buttons similar to the Z7. For now, the Z50 will serve me well and even if Nikon does release a new high end APS-C body within a year, there's no need for me to 'upgrade' to that unless I just happened to have the extra money since I won't need to invest in two separate systems anymore.

    Have the Z50. Have been using D7100 for a few years. Z50 is a major leap foreword. Much lighter weight, and very compact. All the features you would want. Image quality super with kit 16-50 lens. In my opinion, 2 markdowns. The focus box needs to have a way to lock it center screen even if it’s a menu item. Maybe in a future firmware version? The workaround is to turn off the touchscreen, but you loose the other touchscreen functions. You can center the box by pushing the center navigation button. The other is lack of In Body Stabilization. This pretty much limits photogs to using the Nikon Z mount D lenses with built in vibration reduction. If the camera had IBS, we could use any of the Z mount F, pro lenses. Great little camera.

    Hi from Australia. I have been looking at the Z50, as well as the Fujifilm X S10/X T3 and Sony a6400/6600. I have just bought the Nikon to replace an old compact camera which died. Mainly to be used for travel and I wanted lightweight and good quality, and decided that an entry level mirrorless would be preferable to a higher end compact, and around similar cost. Plus being a Canon DSLR user for a long time, I have always longed to own a Nikon of some description. So I am going with the kit lenses in the first instance. Your video will be extremely helpful in setting up the camera when it arrives. Comments from your other subscribers suggest I have made a good decision with the Z50. Your style is laid back, which Australians like!!! And it's just like you are sitting at my dining room table and telling me about the camera. Including all the key things about it!! Cool. You probably already know/understand but just keep in mind that since the 24-200 is a FX/full frame lens, it will give you the field of view of a 36-300mm lens on the Z50 since the Z50 is APS-C with a 1.5 times crop.

      luckyrocks1 Ok. Sounds good. I know what you mean about having more time. I’ve probably got another 10 years or so of full time work before I can retire and then maybe do part time work just for cheap health insurance until 65. For the Z7, I honestly can see myself keeping it 5 or 6 years at least. I mean, there would truly be no reason to upgrade it before then because it has all the resolution I could ever want in the dynamic range and high ISO is outstanding. I hope to settle down now and focus on saving for a few more lenses and then wait to see if there will be a better crop sensor body with in body image stabilization coming.

    Great video and I checked out your photos.. they are brilliant... love the eagle shot!! Those lenses rock! I'm very interested in this camera... and may purchase it soon.... (Interesting the way you shoot in apperture P with exposure comp at rear dial and auto ISO?. - I haven't got much experience shooting, and always shoot fully manual, adjust shutter, app and iso as needed .... not sure if this is the best way to shoot after listening to your methods? Why do use your method and not just do it manually... I am assuming speed?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I appreciate it. Yes, I shoot in Aperture priority (A mode) all the time and I use exposure compensation to make fast adjustments to the exposure only when the camera can be tricked into under or overexposing too much (like if you're shooting with bright snow in the scene (need to increase exposure comp) or shooting something that has a lot of black in the scene (need to decrease the exposure/make it darker because the camera will try to make it too bright). I shoot that way because I am often in a wide variety of lighting conditions that needs a much different exposure than what I was shooting 5 seconds ago. In some situations I might also use the highlight weighted metering mode and not use any exposure compensation because that type of metering exposes for the highlights (but that can also lead to photos that are a little too dark). For me it's just much easier and quicker to use A priority along with exposure compensation (if needed). I understand why pros and some other people may want to use manual exposure mode because for example they may be shooting portraits under the same lighting conditions for 20 minutes and want the exposure to be fixed/same for that period but I'm just not in that situation often, so I take the easy route and use Aperture priority.

    • @madphotographer762
      @madphotographer762 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThePhotographyHobbyist - thanks for your detailed explanation. To be frank, I think I need to go back and re-evaluate my shooting style, because I also shoot in the same varying conditions as you do. I also need to do a little bit of homework to understand my camera a little better...and what all the modes do. I'm lazy and only shoot manual because I haven't been bothered to fully understand the modes and have a memory like a sieve so half the time forget after a few weeks...lol. Thanks again, I love your photography. It's good to see a channel that actually posts decent photos of their work.. you have a good eye..!

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@madphotographer762 Thanks again. I appreciate it. Well, all you really need to understand is aperture, shutter speed and ISO for the exposure. In aperture priority mode, the camera will take care of the ISO (if you have auto ISO on) and shutter speed for you and then all you need to worry about is the aperture (as it relates to how much you want in focus since the aperture controls the depth of field, but how much light comes in also). Beyond that, you look in the EVF (if you have a mirrorless camera) and see if it's too dark or too bright and use exposure comp accordingly to make it brighter or darker. If you have a camera with auto ISO, I'd go ahead and play around in aperture priority mode with auto iso on and see what you come up with. You'll get the hang of it once you start seeing what the camera is doing and why it's making those decisions. I keep my max ISO set reasonably low (1600) because unless I'm shooting action, I can get away with slower shutter speeds until it hits the ISO limit I set and hits the slowest shutter speed I set in auto ISO settings....then as a last resort to keep the shutter speed higher (if I need to), I'll change auto ISO to allow it to use up to ISO 3200 for example...or 6400. I always try to get away with the lowest ISO possible so I have the best file to work with (less noise and the most amount of dynamic range possible).

    Man, I'm really having a hard time deciding between the Panasonic G95 with a 12-60 kit lens and the Nikon Z50 with the 16-50 kit lens. I would like to have the weather sealing of the G95 and the longer focal range would surely come in handy as well.
    Yet, from what I have seen the Z50 appears to produce much better JPEGs and has superior low light performance. I also tried to compare the two models using the images on your website, however I am still not sure. Would you say the weather sealing and longer focal range of the G95 kit is worth it over the overall better image quality of the Z50 kit? How would say do these cameras compare when it comes down to out of cam JPEG quality?
    Thx in advance :)

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you’re not often shooting in lower light situations where you need a much higher ISO to maintain a shutter speed you need, then there’s really not much difference in the overall image quality…when you’re shooting near base ISO or not much above that. Also if you’re mostly shooting JPEG straight from the camera, there might not be as much difference as if you were shooting raw. The cameras do a pretty good job with in-camera JPG. I personally think the Panasonic handles better and like you mentioned you would get a better focal range using that kit lens, so unless you are really worried about higher ISO noise or you have some other reasons why you like the Z 50 better, maybe the Panasonic makes more sense in this case.

      @@ThePhotographyHobbyist
      Wow, already a reply :) Thx!
      My plan was to have good looking JPEGs to share with family and friends and to edit the RAWs later on at home.
      I am currently using an old Lumix FZ80/82. Sadly the poor thing is already noisy at the base ISO of 80. Though, its a tiny sensor with only 1/2.3"...
      Recently I started using DxO PureRaw to process my RAWs. Boy does it do wonders to the noise and muddy image quality!
      So maybe my best bet is to get the G95 use it, be happy, and for those challenging ISO situations, treat the RAWs with DxO.
      Maybe one last question regarding the focus performance of the cameras. I plan on shooting mostly city and landscapes. Rather typical travel photography, if you will. Though, the occasional human or car of interest passes by and wants to be captured.
      Have you noticed a significant improvement in autofocus with the phase detect AF of the Z50 compared to the DFD autofocus of the G95?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrHirschkeule the Z 50 will do better with moving subjects and also with continuous focus when shooting video but if you’re not doing lots of that and most of your subjects are city/landscapes and slower moving objects, I don’t think you would notice much difference.

    I came here from your link on dpreview via your website. Great photos.
    I'm currently looking for a smallish sized camera (not too bulky) which takes decent pictures in low light. After seeing what my friends iphone could do at night in the city, compared to my tg5 (which is my portable carry everywhere camera), I wanted to upgrade. So I've narrowed it down to the Nikon z50, the Sony a6400, the Fujifilm xs10 and xt30 and the Canon Eos M6 Mk II. Do you have any recommendation of which would be better suited?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the Sony (I had it) I don’t like the body shape. It’s a good camera overall but the kit lens is only ok and the body is not very comfortable. The Z50 has a great small body that’s comfortable and great kit lens. The XT30 (I had it) is very small but the body is not very comfortable because there’s not much of a grip and the cheaper 15-45 kit lens is slow (power zoom) and for me it sometimes caused a tilt to the images at the 15mm position. Overall it’s ok but not my favorite. I don’t know much about the Canon. The Fuji XS10 looks nice for the grip and body and would be similar quality images to the XT30. For me, if I have to pick one and I didn’t need more than the two DX native lenses for the Z mount, I’d take the Z50. If more access to lenses were very important then maybe the XS10 would be my next choice.

    Can you tell me if you find the Z50 appreciably smaller/lighter than your Z7? I'm liking the output of the full frame sensor more, but love the portability of the Z50. I do wonder if the real star of the show are the Z50's DX lens set. Have you spent any time using them on the Z7 and still enjoying the resulting cropped ~20MP images that it puts out? Z7 + the pancake zoom would still be nice and small... would it's size and weight be noticeably different to the Z50 + 16-50 in terms of how you pack it round and travel considerations? The Z50 + 16-50 is ALMOST pocketable. I use it with PD Field Pouch, ie not a real camera bag.
    I think I'd also enjoy having the joystick of the Z7 because I've had pro Nikon DSLRs with that. Missing it a bit on the Z50 with so many focus areas to be able to move around in AF-S single point. Disappointed they didn't give us the trackpad interface when they dropped the joystick.
    Anyhow keep up the great work! Enjoying the images of Ohio.. (I think you're at?).

      Thanks. The Z50 is noticeably lighter than the Z7 and is much more comfortable for all day carrying. I've used the DX Z mount lenses on the Z7 and the images look just as good on the Z7. Very nice!

    Hello. I am wanting to go to mirrorless. I use a camera for basically travel. I shoot landscape, buildings, people, and wildlife. I currently have a Canon T3i and a Fujifilm Finepix S-1. I have been looking at the Z-50 and Z-5. I like the idea of a full frame but the Z-5 is so slow for wildlife. I don't shoot a lot in low light. Which camera would you recommend: the Z-5, Z-50 or perhaps get a used Z-6? Thank you!

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. If you've already decided to go with Nikon and you have the money for either of the models you mentioned, I think the Z5 would make the most sense unless you're talking about the Z6 II. Even if you could get the original Z6 for close to the same price as the Z5, the Z5 has the benefit of two memory card slots for redundancy. The full frame cameras (Z5 and Z6) will have more native lenses available and a little better image quality overall...and also more features and customization available compared to the Z50.

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) It would do just fine for macro photography if you have the lens for it. The Z50 can use all the F mount lenses but only the more recently ones (AF-S type lenses) can autofocus on the Z50 since it has no built-in focus motor like the older DSLR cameras did. I only had a real macro lens once in my life and most of the time I don't use a macro lens for close-ups. I like to use lenses that can simply focus as close as I want or use a telephoto lens zoomed in. That's how I did any close-up photos you see in my Z50 gallery here: www.thephotographyhobbyist.com/CAMERAGEAR/Nikon-Z50-Gallery/

      Thank you. Both of those cameras have the same image sensor, so the image quality will be the same. The only reasons I can think of to buy the D7500 would be if you need a little better auto focus in low light, more access to older F mount lenses (even the D type lenses that don't have a focus motor, because the D7500 has a built in focus motor in the body) and a faster max shutter speed (1/8000). The Z50 would be better (to me) in all the other ways. Z50 would also have better video (including AF during video) . You can use the F mount lenses on the Z50 but they have to be the newer AF-S lenses that have the AF motor in the lens.

      Thanks. I shoot in raw and do all my editing in Lightroom. I apply a simple preset I made that just does a couple simple things to start out with and then I edit from there. I apply the 'Standard' picture profile (it's in the 'Camera Matching' profiles in LR and meant to match the 'Standard' profile from Nikon as much as possible). I bump up the vibrance to about 20 and saturation +10. That's my starting point and I usually leave it like that for the vibrance and saturation but I might occasionally go a little higher. Depending on the image, I might occasionally use the 'Vivid' or 'Landscape' camera matching profile in LR...but again, not very often.

    What will you suggest if i had a choice
    in btwn Canon M50 and Nikon Z50 ?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would pick the Z50 for several reasons. The Canon M50 has some restrictions in video, like big crops when shooting 4K. The Z50 has no restrictions in in 1080 or 4K. Also I think the sensor in the Z50 is better (more dynamic range for example), but yes it's around 21 MP vs the M50 26 MP. I can almost guarantee the kit lenses are much better optically than the kit lenses for the M50. Canon also used a different lens mount for the smaller sensor bodies than their full frame EOS R mirrorless bodies, so at least with the Nikon if you wanted to, you could use lenses made for APS-C or full frame (native Z mount lenses or the F mount lenses using the FTZ adapter). I'm assuming you don't already own a lot of Canon lenses that would be compatible with the M50 and you're starting out fresh. In my opinion the Z50 with kit lenses would be better quality than the M50 (better camera body, better functionality, better image and optical quality).

    This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and it was a good informative video.
    I have the Z50 with the 16-50 kit lens and the adapter.
    I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with the Z50.
    I grew up shooting a camera up against my body for stability so I use the view finder. Now as Im older and have tremors I need the stability even more.
    Ive shut the touch screen off on my Z50 when using the view finder but either my nose/cheek is turning the touch screen back on which changes what is on the screen when using the viewfinder.
    Instead of showing the icons of shutter speed, etc it turns to showing just the grid.
    Im trying to figure out a way not to turn the screen back on with my nose or cheek but haven't been successful.
    This is why the Z50 has been sitting for months on a shelf and Im using my D810, D7100, D3300, or P900 instead.
    Again nice video.

      Thanks. Maybe you haven't really turned off the touch control function. Just to be sure, here's the menu item for that. It looks like you can set it so the rear screen won't respond to touch unless you're in payback mode. Maybe that's the option you want. Allows you to use touch while in playback mode but otherwise, while shooting the rear screen won't respond to touch: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z50/en/09_menu_guide_06_15.html
      Adjust settings for monitor touch controls.
      - Enable/disable touch controls: Select Disable to prevent accidental use of touch-screen controls, or Playback only to enable touch-screen controls in playback mode only.
      - Full-frame playback flicks: Choose whether the next image in full-frame playback is displayed by flicking left or by flicking right.

      It depends on your needs and wants but overall the Z 50 would be the most comfortable camera to hold if that’s important to you. The Fuji might have the best image quality overall, but not drastically different. If you don’t need to shoot lots of action photos I think I’d go with the Z50. If you do need better tracking autofocus for fast action photos maybe the a6400 is the best option and there are many lenses available for the Sony.

      SONY Alpha A7 II 28-70mm OSS? It is a 5 year older model, it is 50% more expensive than the Z50, it has less advanced features like video, which is not that important to me. But it has an FF sensor, stabilization and probably better image quality, which is important to me. • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Milos Rondovic That Sony actually has less dynamic range than the sensor in the Nikon Z50. The Z 50 is worse when it comes to high ISO though. The image sensor in the Nikon D7500 is the same as the Z 50 sensor so you can look at this comparison to see the image quality differences. www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7-II-versus-Nikon-D7500___996_1161
      The Sony is probably still ok for 2020 compared to the Z50 if you don’t need better video and don’t mind a little less dynamic range.

    Why is it the Z 16-50mm becomes 24-75mm equivalent when its already a DX lens on DX body? I thought 16-50mm FX is equal to 24-75mm if FX lens is put on DX body? I'm horribly confused..

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Murder Doll The APS-C lenses (Nikon calls it DX) are a smaller number but you have to multiply that by 1.5 to know the full frame (FX) equivalent. So a DX 16mm is an equivalent of 24mm field of view in FX format. Since the FX lenses are already full frame, if you put a 24mm FX lens on a DX body like the Z50 you have to multiply by 1.5 so the 24mm FX lens has a 36mm field of view in the DX camera body.

    • @ruelapas6240

      When I buy the new Z mount 24-200mm lens (it’s full frame/FX) that will of course be 24-200 on the Z6 and Z7 but it would have the field of view of 36-300 on the Z50 DX/APS-C body because of the 1.5 times crop of APS-C sensor size bodies like the Z50.

    • @ruelapas6240
      @ruelapas6240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      FX lens on APS-C body that's when we multiply 1.5 crop factor right? How about DX lens on APS-C do we still apply 1.5 crop?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Murder Doll IF you are using a DX lens on the Z50 you multiply by 1.5 to understand the FX field of view but that’s only just to understand what the FX field of view is. It’s not cropping because the DX lens is made for the Z50. So they make them with the smaller numbers like 16-50 to equal the same field of view you’d get on full frame like 24-75 which is a pretty common type of zoom lens on FX (24-70 for example). If you’re using an FX lens on the DX body you still have to multiply by 1.5 because the FX lens is made to cover the full frame/35mm size image sensor.
