    Great video! I still have to mount the battery, switch, and amp but I connected the electronics and the initial test was impressive. Very loud with the amp input level almost completely turned down. There's a few clarifications/tips I'd like to add: (1.) Foregoing the switch and just applying power to the amp didn't turn the amp on (I believe the remote input on the amp needs to be triggered to get the amp to power up), so I ran to Radio Shack to buy a switch just like the one in the video and it worked! (2.) Pay close attention to around the 10:50 mark of the video. Both battery leads need two outgoing wires connected to them. (3.) He's right about the equipment. That battery and that amp connected to quality speakers is all you need. Buy online, and you can get your setup for a little over $100 (4.) make sure you have a good box cutter to cut out the speaker holes. I found saws to be useless. I used the cardboard that came in the speaker packaging as a template, and it worked great. (5.) I used home speaker wire, and cut up the charging cord to an old shaver to connect the power. (6.) The amp has all sorts of warnings about not using the input level adjustment as a volume control. Using your ipod's volume is okay, but I'll be adding an RCA volume knob.

    just need to get a rubber surround for the insert mdf so it seals off, add a tiny bit of sound deadedner on the sides and bottom inside the box and should be a very nice sounding setup, also have a latch to keep that lid open, because when all that is applied then you'll be having to open it all the time due to too much awesomeness

    You can buy any of many batteries for an ATV or battery backup battery. I have a bunch of old ones that were going to be recycled and coolers are cheap at the thrift store. You can put a stereo in, cigarette port for charging your phone, etc.
    You can also use the metal wall anchors that crimp down.

    What's the best (easy) way to cut the speaker holes into the cooler? What I ended up doing was I bought the 20W amp for $15 on ebay and I bought to home stereo speakers at Goodwill. I screwed the amp into the center consul on my 2011 Prius closest to me. I wired the speakers up from the cargo area and put the back seats down for more sound. I then plugged the amp into my cig lighter for pwr. I have an Aptek mp3 player as the radio. It blasts me out of the car! For such a low pwr amp I couldn't believe it powered those big stereo speakers!

    You did a very good job explaining how to build it, I have built a couple of cooler radios myself and I just used a huge deep cycle battery with a pioneer deck and 4 speakers. It got loud but it was a pain lugging it around, even with wheels. I've seen those battery's at Walmart and have considered using them but just haven't had the time to do it but now I think I'll build another one. Thanks for the video it was very informative!

    Your amp may not be getting enough power or drawing too much power and cutting out when the volumes too high. Think of if as small power surges that you amp or battery can't handle. Try using a smaller amp, also if you're using a small battery like the one I use it the video make sure it's a 12volt battery, I've never had that problem with any setup I've done, so it may be fair to say your problem is in the amp though it could be the battery

  • @Franko.Details
    @Franko.Details 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    And no in this aplication the amp is not more important than the speakers, for such a small set up like this, a cheap lower power amp is ok. It doesnt take a lot to make the speakers sound good and its easier on the battery not to mention the wallet (altough its your imagination go as crazy as you please). You dont want super cheap speaks because they sound like crap, but you dont want super expensive ones either that would sound better with a high power amp. Its about practicality in this case

    So for the Ne sayers who don't understand not being able to put beers in it let me give me you some perspective. You can make the cooler so that it still holds beer/drinks but it enters the realm of complexity and the video was graciously made to show simplicity. The other part is that making, displaying, and having a cooler stereo is a growing thing of status. Float down a river and mutual respect will be given to the built coolers and none to the purchased waterproof stereo. It's personality

  • @Franko.Details
    @Franko.Details 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The whole reason for this setup is Practicality! A small portable boom box with the key feature of a cheap small battery. I do like the bigger setups but like I said in the vid its stupid to use a big heavy $100 plus car battery. The bigger boxes are cool and elaborate but in the end just overkill, expensive and bulky as hell

    Yeah if it's 2 hundo watts RMS that's too much for the speakers probably, go back re-check all your wiring "no doubt you already did" might also make sure the gauge of the wire isn't too small or too big, I used a combo of 14g and 16g

  • @Franko.Details
    @Franko.Details 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm thinking about making a more in depth cooler video that shows you how to plug the cooler into an a/c outlet when the battery runs out. Does anyone like or care about that feature or would I be wasting James' and my time doing that vid???

    I'm pretty sure it's a 28q, use what ever you like, in my opinion a medium sized cooler works the best just make sure the sides are smooth. And I used 16g wires. Went the the auto parts store and got a spool of red and black

    HELP!!! Not working and idk why...
    I'm using a brand new 12v 12ah battery with brand new 50 RMS Dual cheapo 6x9...
    Tried 3 amps, 1 doesn't have a power light so we'll exclude that one right away (250w 2ch). The second (100w 2ch) has a LOGO on top that DOES light up but the power light does NOT. And lastly when I try the last amp (225w 4ch) "protection" light comes on briefly then stays off but still no power light...
    I wired everything exactly how you have yours, toggle switch and all.... WHAT AM I MISSING?!? 😫😓

  • @TomMattin
    @TomMattin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The switch is wrong. Electrics on 12v is similar in ways to mains. The switch power should be the feed in (from battery) and then load is the output (to amp), and ground is both of them connected; its a single pole switch meaning it only isolates the line conductor.

    • @leroyjenkins09
      @leroyjenkins09 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah the switch is right, it switches a hot source to the amp on a separate terminal that controls the on/off function of the amp, think of it kinda like the amp has its own built in relay.

    Please LMK.....I thought the idea of ground was for some kind of protection from surges . I know its low power, but safety is safety...where is your ground??? Eventually, the ground has to be grounded? Am I missing something ? The idea of speaker is great....but maybe a long rod or a long screwdriver driven into soil can act as a ground?

    • @leroyjenkins09
      @leroyjenkins09 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 12 volt dc system. The word "ground" is used way too often as an interchangeable term for "negative". On the amp the "ground" is just simple instruction for an amp meant for car installation to be connected to the chassis of the car to facilitate the connection of the negative terminal on the amp to the battery.

      I use my Ryobi 18v battery and it kicks ass. The best thing about it, is that if i take it somewhere and the battery's power dies, i just swap it out for a recharge one, and again when that one goes dead. I have 6 for my power tools but i also use them for my Bluetooth box.

It would be great to use one of them wheelie ice chests for easier transport through the neighborhood. Also, how about applying the same concept to wheelie trash bins? Just imagine the bass response you'd get. Plus, you can add a crossover and a 15" woofer to handle the low frequency end. Wow! Now that's what I call a Ghetto Blaster.

Glad you liked the video and were smart enough to realize it was to help folks build a homemade stereo, "some who have commented that it helped them immensely" and that's it's not an actual working cooler in which you so cleverly commented about the ice melting, that would have been embarrassing to have made that mistake, oh wait...never mind, you big dummy. l don't know what it is about this video but l like watching it multiple times. it is like that song you just can't get out of your head, good job. this is a good idea for a last minute music system on a shoe string budget, but for long term us l would cut the wiring for the tweeters and put in a crossover. maybe a solar panel, a head unit, a psu for home use, and a capacitor for the amplifier to keep the current from the small battery constant.

    • @Franko.Details
      @Franko.Details 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man, my philosophy on this approach is to keep it small and simple. A lot and I mean a lot of people mention right off the bat from first seeing this or any other cooler is...What can we add, solar panels, volt meters, led lights, subwoofer and 200 watt amp, this that and the other, (inevitably followed by how long do you think the batt would last...HA) which is absolutely fine if you're a super tech head, I'm not knocking that at all. I understand the bigger is better and WAY bigger must be better mentality, but I've built about 15 different coolers and for me personally I like em simple.

    Frank,
    I want to add a subwoofer to my cooler radio, but I am unsure how to do so. Can you help

    • @tiddesz2362
      @tiddesz2362 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      unless there is a subwoofer port on your amplifier, you have to convert 2 mono (stereo) wires to 1mono and connect a crossover. Then you can connect the sub.

    How do you make the wires? like do you buy the clips and wire separate or is there a kit?

    Cool Idea man. If it does hold heat like the other guy was saying you could just cut a couple vent holes on the rear..nice work
