The awl will not woork for needle felting. You need felting needles. They are barbed needles that catch the fibers and that's what felts them together. You can find them on ebay and etsy, or even hobby lobby fairly cheap.

The so-called doll coloring book is paperdolls. Color the clothes on the pages. Cut the clothes and the doll out and the clothes fit over the doll body. The tabs on the clothes are the giveaway.
