9:15 There was no “string” on his back, it was revealed years later that _the lean_ trick was pulled off by having the shoes affixed to the floor, even with that it still takes some practice and skill to pull it off but that’s how they did it.
For this video/film & further stage productions, Jackson was inspired by stage magicians/illusionists, so he actually had someone design special illusion slots on the floor obscured to the audience but he & his dancers shoes could fit so they could pull off the leaning effect. No strings attached indeed.

He's totally not given credit believe it or not as a dancer and singer. And his dancing is very technical and so is his singing. He doesn't just gyrate or throw himself around for no reason when dancing, there's always a purpose and a feeling to his dancing; intricacies from his feet to his hands to his head. The best. Simple.
MJ is the greatest, he was a perfectionist when it comes to his professional career.

9:15 There was no “string” on his back, it was revealed years later that _the lean_ trick was pulled off by having the shoes affixed to the floor, even with that it still takes some practice and skill to pull it off but that’s how they did it.
For this video/film & further stage productions, Jackson was inspired by stage magicians/illusionists, so he actually had someone design special illusion slots on the floor obscured to the audience but he & his dancers shoes could fit so they could pull off the leaning effect. No strings attached indeed.
Back in the day when his music videos would premier they would stop Network TV to show it during primetime all over the world. that's why his music videos were so long it was an event.

My fav MJ vid of all time - and I grew up when this shit came out, we were tryna copy these moves in the schoolyard at lunch every day. It's got a 1920's speakeasy vibe combined w 80s pop rock. Nothing on earth like this, that i know of. My youngest (19 yo) could not BELIEVE I was hiding this brilliance by not telling him about it before I did lol. Michael designed shoes to assist with The Lean . Posts came up out of the floor and inserted into the heels of his shoes. No one else copied him because he got a patent on the design. His ankles still had to be incredibly strong even with the special shoes.

Yes Michael and the dancers really bent that forward with special shoes that Michael created with 2 other inventors. There was a slot in the heel that engaged with a peg which could be raised and protruded through the stage floor when activated. Michael is just a pure genius.

Amazing. When this video came out, I was in AWE...I wanted to watch it, over and over...lol. Looking back - I think all those Jackson variety specials he did as a teenager (youtube it)...led to this. Where MJ was doing skits with his family, dancing to Broadway tunes. MJ remains - THE gold standard. Bar none.

This continues from and into the rest of the music movie for his Bad album called, "Moonwalker!" This song, "Smooth Criminal" was every kids song, the moment this song came on, we went wild. The part where he leans forward was something we kept trying to do year in year out thinking "How did he do that?" lol Michael was a genius. All his songs are timeless.

It's not a lot longer. A few seconds difference if that. This is basically the full length video. I wouldn't say "alot longer " at all. Got a bit carried away there didn't ya. lol the version from the movie ends as soon as the Asian woman slams the door shut and cuts to Michael outside calling for Katie and the boys. That's all. This short film was titled "Chicago Nights " on the clapper boards during production in 1987.
