Never have I forgotten Bruce; never will I forget him and the events of that day. May he contine to rest peacefully; and may Georgie, Pam, and Cheryle take comfort in the knowledge he lies now in full honor in Arlington among his fellow servicemen.

There was a line from the movie "Flags of Our Fathers" that puts it quite simple.
"You fight for your country and you die for your buddies."
From the daughter whose Father fought in Vietnam, Thank You For Your Service and Welcome Home Sir! Semper Fidelis.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

M'am, It is with the deepest respect. To honor your son, whom willingly gave his life to save thoose in his troop in willing them to go on. I cannot tell you that I understand, I was a child during the policing action of Vietnam, I remember the injured men when they were transported to the Air Force Military Base in the Philippines. We would go and visit the soldiers at the hospital. It was difficult to understand, but the compassion I felt at the age of 4, enlightened them to be touched with gentleness of a little girl. I saying the songs of nursery rhymes and some my brothers had taught me. To which they would laugh.
You probably wonder how was I to be there, My Mother was president of the Non Commissioned Officers Wives. She felt part of the healing was us kids to be children who gave compassion, friendship, and respect by looking beyond their wounds and be held so tight when they would break down in tears of such emotion. We did this on a regular basis a couple times a week. I learned to understand the lose of when they would pass, not be there. But there were others who came in. Up until my Dad was reassign to the states. When I was older I spoke with Mom about the Hospital visits. She told of how she challenged the Hospital Colonel and all of the other Upper Ranks, when they saw mom coming they would hide. My Mom did more there for the Philippinos in the area around the base getting schools books, supplies, and food for lunch, clothing and whatever she was asked.
to do, while we where there.
When moved to San Antonio, she took us into get our shots updated, she came head on into one of them. She just greeted him like an old friend, he was so befuddled his lackeys bumped into him making him unbalanced, he bout landed, pushed mom over. Needless to say he walked away with mom laughing so hard. Teasing him about the moment any chance she could. She thrived on it, just to say your just like us,now. Them bars don't have the power as it did in the Philippines.
Mom, knew how polite sarcasm can maneuver through.
M'am, I believe you are one of those Mom's. You brought your Son to his rightful resting place. You fought, dug, and used some polite sarcasm too. My Grandma, was a Gold Star Mother, she had 4 sons in World War 2, on whom passed served on to campaigns Europe, and on Iwagima, passing away there. He wasn't supposed to go, they fought the battle in Europe, but not a good survival rate in the Pacific Campaign, she lost him there, 4 went 3 came home. She ran her areas chapter, with pride and helpful to the grieving Mother's, and their families. She did fulfill her position for ww2 and the Veitnam campaign, Korea. You M'am are worthy for all you did for Mothers, families, helping when the military was done, it was not over for you and the Mother's who continued to serve for their lost child or children.
Forgive me for taking the long route to tell you about being a Gold Star Mother, I wanted you to know. If your Son could have been brought to the base, for his injuries. I might have been that little girl. But he gave of himself. No discerning, willing, courageous SON.
Thank you for giving of yourself no matter how hurtful, troubling, you pressed on.
Thank you for your service, You are counted amongst the warriors.
With Deepest Respect, in being a voice in the darkness,
    Zola Irene Phelps, Lane
Daughter of an Air Force Staff Sergeant
Daughter to Kick butt, no nonsense Woman who served alongside with her
Husband. Married 28 years, 4 children.
Staff Sergeant Fred V. Phelps and Anita I. Phelps

I saw him at his old resting place but now I will see him at his new one someday. His honor and memory remain with us as our hospital bears his name and where his mother has served those who have come after her son. Thank you for bringing this to us as we could not be there ourselves. Semper Fi!
