Rescuing a Great Unclean One using leftover bits!

  • This week I take the leftover bits in the Great Unclean One box and put them to good use. I wasn't sure this was going to work, but I decided I would share that journey no matter the outcome. I am glad to say that I think the result is rather incredible. A little bit of 3D printing and some bits, a new Rottigus is born! Isn't he precious... I've been working on a Nurgle army since I got back into the hobby. When the Great Unclean One was released I knew I had to have multiples of the model. One of the first videos I ever did on the channel was about making another one using leftover bits from the box. Back in those days new bodies for the GUO were really easy to find on eBay. Unfortunately that is really no longer the case. I have had a saved search with push notifications since that kit came out and I was only able to get 1 actual GW body. Luckily, 3D printing has brought us into a new age, and there are plenty of awesome proxy options for GUOs to put out on the battlefield. I got mine from Duncanshadow.com. Duncan Louca is an incredible sculptor that makes a ton of amazing minis. He also has some really good proxy models for the GUO, I bought the 3D kit for $10, which is a lot less than I would have spent on a body off of eBay, so I'm counting that as a huge win, plus, I can print his amazing version now! If you can't tell, I highly recommend checking out his website and patreon, it's fantastic.

    Hello. I would love to see you paint an entire miniature only using oil paints and therefore wet blending highlights and shadows. No airbrush exept for acrylic primer and undercoats. No washes and no dry brushing. Call this a challenge from an oldtimer who always painted this way back in the day. All the best.

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve definitely got plans to just use oils. I just picked up some Windsor and Newton colors to do some tests with. I have that little set, but the stuff doesn’t seem to hold up the same, good for washes though.

    • @rhino5419
      @rhino5419 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eBayMiniatureRescues I have figurines/minis painted 30 yrs ago with the paint as good today as it was back then. I only used Windsor and Newton with a Winton black and white. On metal mouldings or plastic or resin, makes no difference. I would say they hold up pretty well. I never got used to the acrylic paints exept for under coats myself but i admit it was the way to go with faster drying times and no toxic solvents. I never cease to be amazed by the results obtained now that we only dreamed of back then. All the best.

    As usual a stellar job. I think you did yourself a disservice by showing the real close ups at the end. They broke down the overall job and defined hard lines that would not be obvious to someone looking at the model from even 3 feet away. Your blends and edges are best seen on that turning plinth as a whole the way some one would see it on the table top or as a display piece. Remember the camera is brutal and can not reproduce the image the eye can.

    I find it interesting how you talk about working up the nerve to paint something you've had sitting there for some time. I know exactly how you feel. I just recently bought a 3D printer and printed and painted a 1/4 scale Tifa model. I'd never used an airbrush before so imagine how I felt tackling this job. For even small parts of the model I'd spend days just thinking about how I wanted to paint them and watching video after video on TH-cam about techniques. Took me a few weeks to paint the whole thing and I'm happy with the result.

    What you said about being too scared to put paint to a miniature really resonated with me, as I'm sure it does a lot of people in this hobby. I have grand ideas but always worry my execution won't live up to it and that just halts me in my tracks and then I don't get anything done! So I really appreciate your honesty and I'm going to pick up the brush and paint today to start getting over that hurdle. I've watched a few of your videos and they've all been excellent so I'm going to subscribe as well to make sure I keep up with your content. Thanks!

      Thanks for the sub, and I’m glad you are enjoying the videos!
      The fear of ruining a model is definitely something that took a while to get over. Every so often it still creeps back in but you’ve got to squash that down by picking up the brush and just starting. The thing that really helped me was knowing that, if I really wanted to, I could just strip the model and start over. Paint can always come off of the model with pretty minimal effort, so you might as well enjoy the process of painting and not worry about it too much, there is always the next model too :)

    This channel is wildly under viewed. How are there not more subs?

    Really love the paint job man. Awesome work. I do have to say though, I will miss the instructional style videos you used to make.

    Really like the editing in this video. I don't know if this is a one time thing or you new style, but it seems like you are improving fast as a video editor as well as as a painter.

      Much appreciated man :)
      The plan is to make videos like this as much as I can. There will still be tutorial style videos showing mostly painting, but I want to make them as exciting as I can.

    Awesome bro 😁
    Trying sth similar at the moment, I’m challenging myself with alarielle and her beetle 😂 but completely without an air brush (because I don’t have one) and with a new painting range I kickstartered recently. Looks quite promising for now, but there’s still much to do 😂
