At 30$ per 700g, this is a filament that will remain at the store.
I wouldn't touch filament under $30. We spend $35 a spool pretty much across the board.. Direct from the manufacturer.. sits for less than 2 weeks. I hate cheap filament on Amazon because you get little to no consistency over time with moisture, color, settings, etc.
Man, I wasn't ready to be hit in the feels with the Fresh Prince scene... That one gets me every time!

I bought trheir filament on your recommendation way back when - after I tuned my print settings for it, I really like it. At nearly $45//kg it's not an every day filament, but I really like it.
Glad to see a video for this made. There are so many filaments out there that you can literally throw a dart at a list of them, print with it, and it will print just fine... so having any video about filament is different. The price doesn't concern me as much... but that may be because I started with colorFabb and bought a ton of it (great stuff and still some of the more unique color options out there). At this point, I buy for color. I keep swatches of every filament I've used so I can look at the 15 "red" PLAs and pick which shade (from "it's a bit pink" to "it's a bit purple") of red I want. So when I see people only use one brand it's like "hey, try something else... it may be a better color" but I'm just some rando, so trying to convince someone to go outside their filament comfort zone with "better color" or "it prints better" is not the easiest.
I absolutely love Spidermaker filament. It does need to be very dry but it prints like nothing else. Well worth the slightly higher price.

The Prusament Galaxy Black (even in petg) looks very similar. The sparkles in the Prusament have the similar effect of eighty sixing the layer lines.
Agreed on it being a specific purpose to be sought out. Like proto pasta, very specialized. For everyday, it's Jessie PLA!
I used thier Army Green and it printed great!
The wide range in cost of filament would make for a very interesting video. On the one end you have GST3D at $9 per KG which I've had some great results with, on the other you have Proto Pasta as much as $50. Would be good to understand what really drives the difference in cost and comparison of results of multiple prints.
Ha! I remember printing face masks.. since I just made some more a couple days ago. Most folks I know don't like the full printed mask like I prefer, but I've distributed a lot of printed shells for people to wear between their face and their paper or cloth masks - they say it makes things much more comfortable, especially if they're wearing for an hour or more.
Let's talk price:
GST3D: As you mentioned, $8.99/Kg is a bulk price 10Kg (10 spools) for this price. One kilo costs $21.99. Still not a bad idea if you like the brand and you need a lot of PLA.
As for Spidermaker, you are paying a little over 4 cents a gram [$42.81-ish for one kilo], which makes for some very expensive tuning. Especially if you rated your models lower than 80% quality. So there's going to be a lot of waste product, too. Thank you for printing and showing it, though. You do help make filament buying easier.
Eastman, Wekster, and Chelsea make some awesome models! The tail looks okay, support removes well for sure. Wonder if that waxy nature helps in the support removal?
Stay away from GST 3D, we have has so many inconsistencies with their material. A spool that came with a client printer for repair had diameters from 1.62mm up to 2.1mm within a meter of material.. Also have to be cautioned at their claims of being made in the USA. They have an office a few hours away that we intend on visiting soon! 8.99/kg made in the USA does not seem possible, very curious to see how they do it! We have had some reports of it working well though. Personally, I would rather support Dave and the awesome people at Printed Solid! :)
WHat specific need would this fill that you couldn't fill with other filaments that are much cheaper?
Love the video and love the amazing work you do. However, I have a question. You point out the little layer inconsistencies and such and say, "I can tune the filament in better". But, it looks really good from my point of view- I'm not super serious about very tiny imperfections- so what tuning exactly would you due to make those layers as perfect as you want them to be?
I bought a couple of spools after your last video on this filament. I don't see any layer lines... er, because I haven't used it yet. I ended up switching to PolyTerra for a matte finish PLA due to the lower price and eco credentials. That would be an interesting comparison review. SpiderMaker vs PolyTerra.

Quick note on GST3D. I print with it a good bit. I don’t like the black and the white because I find that the black is too shiny and I compare the white to something not safe for youtube in color and opacity, but the colored filament is my favorite. The yellow in my opinion is better than the hatchbox yellow in every conceivable way. The spools look like garbage, but the filament that comes on them is not horrible. I bought $200 of the stuff a while back and I’m not even through half of it yet.

i used this filament a bit with my ender 3 pro, first 2 prints turned out great but i couldnt print anything else after that. I looked and the whole extruder was covered in dust from the filament and now it barely works.
I think they found out about this video. Price as of the time I write this has already gone up by 10% of what you said in the video.
I do wish more people made matt finish options though. Thanks for another fun video. High-5!
I've actually had incredible success with SpiderMaker filaments since your last video. I use it for probably 20-30% of my personal printing, particularly for quality/art printing, mini's, and other high-fidelity printing. The color and texture is definitely a big factor in why I use it and it's far exceeded all of my other filaments at minimizing layer line visibility.
The really interesting anomaly that I haven't been able to fully explain is that you *must* use the filament out of a dry box or on first opening for optimal results. After sitting out for more than a week or two I start seeing normal layer line performance compared to other filament. But if I dry the filament it goes back to that same level of superior quality. This doesn't really make sense to me given how stable PLA usually is so it may have something to do with their waxy feeling of the filament, but its highly noticeable.
Given how well the prints come out on new box opening/drying, it's been worth that pain for me as I haven't achieved a superior layer line blending experience with any other filament straight off of the print bed.
Well whats yuo talk its not so extrange, many filament are hydroscopic, well yuo know, like nylon or tpu, and this one could be as yuo say, in fact some people allways "coock" there filament before a jprint job, thats why i have the dry box esun( for tpu is vital)
Spidermaker looks like a good filament. As someone starting out in 3d printing, I cannot justify $30 per 700g. I found Gizmodorks for $20 per 1KG spool and it works fine for me. I also have Sunlu filament that I got for $159 for a 10 spools at 1kg (or $16 per spool) pack. I know that higher priced filament can be higher quality, but I cannot justify it right now when the things I print don't justify the higher quality filament.

Yeah... but the PRICE! If you live in the EU, there are some alternatives that also have the "urban" colors and the matte finish but that cost roughly half as much (if you shop smart).
Love your videos, I'm a big fan - but this one, I have doubts as when you're reviewing a filament, the one thing you could do is .. tune the filament, no? 🤔. I probably just misunderstood the whole intention of the video ;-)
Overture Matte Filament works just as good if not better in some ways, and it is cheaper. But it does look nice.
If you want matte PLA filament, go with Polymaker Polyterra. It's only $20 a kg and it is of good quality.
Watch out for that GST3D.. particularly filament width inconsistencies. I had a clog in my bowden tube with that stuff. Not the hot end. Literally a section was so thick (presumably they had had to do a splice there) that it was unable to pass through the bowden tube. (CR-6/SE stock). It does print pretty well though. Just a word to the wise.
Have to agree, GST is not great...
I had the same thing with one spool. The other 9/10 have been great so far, but one of them kept clogging even after completely replacing the nozzle.
Also had one spool out of 20 that was too wide and caused clogs. I e-mailed them and they refunded $8.99 immediately. So not totally great but they do stand behind their product.

RE: Jessie PLA. I really liked the look and the colours but I had three rolls that clogged my prusa i3 mk3 nearly every time. Much fiddling, much back and forth with the Jessie people, I gave up. Everything else prints perfectly on the Prusa and the Jessie printed fine in my crappy old Wanhao. Weird.
GST 3D are in the UK now. I'd be interested to hear what they are like.
That waxiness and matte finish you describe reminds me of PolyTerra from Polymaker. PolyTerra is cheaper per kg and has environmental benefits if you're into that kind of thing.
We were using PolyTerra for some small batch manufacturing. We liked it because of the price, matte finish, and colors. I was about to write a novel, but to;dr, it caused under extrusion issues in any of our printers it had been used in. Perhaps others will have better luck. Despite the price, SpiderMaker has been a huge improvement.
@@kevint759 I definitely find I need to tweak temperature settings and I don't think it's perfect. I do get a bit more stringing with it although I maybe need to keep tweaking. I think I'm happy with the compromises for my needs. It sounds as if your use case has more exacting requirements so absolutely fair enough
I've printed 3 rolls of PolyTera when they first released and they give off an odor that I can't describe. Haven't tried SpiderMaker but don't know if it has the same issues. Currently printing Protpasta matte fiber black and it doesn't give off odors.
@@brisance Yeah it is an interesting odour. It sort of makes me think of a mix between acrylic paint and celery (of all things). I was a bit concerned about it initially as I'm not overly fond of strong odours, but I've actually kind of grown to like it. I assume it is in part due to the organic additives PolyMaker use to make it more compostable and eco-friendly.
A lot of people hate on gst3d I've used about 100spools now and have only had one bad spool.
I find that SpiderMaker works best for printing D&D mini's on my Ender3
Test some Redline Mystic PLA or same type of filament from other brands. Watch CNC kitchen for it ...
Joel, what happened between then and now? The original video has pieces that look damn near injection molded. These in red? Not so much. Have you reprinted anything you printed in the original video to see if there's a difference?

@@MetalheadAndNerd it's not just the price I just thought it was funny being mentioned 3 times in the video. To me specialty filaments being more than $20 isn't that uncommon. I paid $35 per pound when I had a makerbot in 2010 so filament prices went down considerably and quality went up. That's what I got out of the video.
@@Mitch3D I know but whenever a filament manufacturer puts less than 1kg on a spool I get the impression that they are trying to fool people who compare prices by spool.

From my experience, Spider filament has nice matte color but very poor layer adhesion.

STD3D is HORRIBLE!!!! We bought a 10 pack and found that 50% of the rolls were out of size tollerance and would actually jam in the PTFE tube!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably wouldn't be an issue with a direct drive printer, but it was so bad that me and my friends now call it MST3K filament.
I wouldn't buy that stuff if it was $5 a roll. The only other name brand I've an a major issue with was YSFilament. Their gold silk would either not stick to itself or would clod the extruder.

Far far too expensive to buy even for a one off print, 700 Grams for $29.99. That's not even a full standard weight spool of 1 Kg. Only someone whom is not bothered about cost buys that.
I just found a company on ebay UK which can sell full spools of Silk Filament for only £3 a spool and if you buy 2 or more they cut tat down to only £2.60p a full spool and free UK delivery and there's Paypal cover for the buying and a ebay 30 day money back as well. I be getting some soon.

They aren’t really really bad. At all. I’m sorry you think that. They aren’t perfect, but they are far from really really bad. It’s not bad filament either. I’m glad you have great success with generic abs as well.
