Tom! Legend. For so long have been confused when seeing one of these rigs as to what is going on, but watching you assemble and explains yours has been super insightful. Looking forward to building my rig now, thanks pal!
Very helpful. Love that you also mention the Pelican Cases and seeing you pull the rig out of the case almost built was great to see. Thanks Tom! Let me know when you are in LA and we can grab beers and maybe get Ted to give us a tour of the Fox bunker.
I shoot events with my shoulder rig. And what I'm missing on your rig is the counter weight. It gives my setup so much more comfort. And with my just added Zacuto EVF it is very compact. So I can shoot for 12 hours and walking around with the rig without problems. I have posted a picture on the facebook of my rig.
Tom Antos I use the Panasonic GH3 as my camera and the Zacuto EVF I love it! The EVF has a really great display and you can set many thing like zebra's focus peaking 2.35:1 lines etc. The greatest thing was I bought the EVF used for 200 euro instead of 800 new :)
No disrespect Tom but i am really tempted to buy this rig but noticed your vid is on the Came-TV website. Did you buy it or was it sent to you for free ? A full rig with a excellent FF at this price it sounds to good to be true. Just checking this is a genuine consumer review as you seem like a genuine chap. Regards Chris UK
Very nice Tom. I have the GH4 and the same monitor as well. I'd love to get an a7s but has no internal 4k (spoiled with the GH4) and the cost plus needing new lenses is scaring me away. Thanks for sharing with us your nice set up.
Yeah the Sony a7S is not really making much sense if you got the GH4, specially once you put the new Canon EF to m43 speedbooster. The GH4 is used in 99% of my shoots now... the Sony a7S only when I really have to shoot in ultra low light scenarios.
Świetna robota, jak zawsze, Tom Antos! Czas pomyśleć o przeskoku z Canona... :) Great job as always, Tom! Time to think of jumping ship form Canon... :)
As always, cool video and nice info Tom! If you found all this giant boxes full of gear in the coast - could you share where is this place so we can check the beach? =) Wish you more projects and great health!
Thank you for taking the time to say thank you! Always happy to hear that my videos help others. Glad to also hear we share the same style... I think we got the best style of filmmaking then... just don't say this out loud or others might get jealous :-)
victorbart True, they also have solid stuff but lately it seems hard to find their parts... like the shoulder pad I use in this video is from Ginirigs, its great but I can't seem to find it for sale anymore. Do you know if they're company is still operating?
Tom Antos They don't sell their stuff in shops. The website looks active www.ginirigs.net/ . But the loose parts are so expensive compared to a complete package. Not fun to buy extra stuff.
I don't get it. I know that 1000€ for that rig is pretty cheap compared to other high end rigs. But still: How the fu*k can this piece of plastic/metal cost one grand?!
This setup is near identical to what I use, but with the Wooden Camera medium box, H6 Zoom, Lilliput 5" Monitor and kamerar Matte Box. Yours is better for sure. But man, even all that gets so heavy to lug around. I'm always trying to tuck extensions and prices to tighten up the rig. Running and gunning with these setups is no joke and not always so easy. haha. Fun to build, but a pain to manage. I've been pulling off my monitor and having an easier time getting around.
+SLWassets well professional camera is relevant to one's use, for one thing. I get paid plenty for the work that I do without personally having to own a cinema quality camera. Secondly, for my day job we shoot the Sony a7s which has given us excellent quality vs a heavier DSLR or BMCC, so we're saving on weight as it is. If you're referring to stepping up to a RED scarlet or Epic, or C100/300 at that 7-10K+ range, you could go with a build like this and completely accomplish what you're looking for, for far less than 10K. But it's all relative to the job need. I was simply empathizing with Tom here about low cost kit builds. More importantly than the camera itself were talking about hardware, and when it comes to a run and gun scenario we are trying to find light weight and comfortable solutions. New mirrorless lightweight camera tech has taken big steps over the years, and my comments are no discredit to what Tom has done here. There is no irony my friend. Many folks are using prosumer cost cameras and making professional work, and trying to keep the overhead low. Your comment comes across pretty harsh.
Thanks for this great overview of your rig. Just one question: I guess you never bother using the EVF much with the rig. Is there ever a problem in bight conditions using the rear camera screen?
Hello am try to buy the pelican case but how did u get the rig to fit the foam did u manually cut the foam or did the shape of the foam came with the rig ?
Tom are you still using this rig? Have you bought any new rigs that are better? I'm right now getting the Zacuto Indie Recoil Rig as I've researched and been told that a camera that is truly balanced on your shoulder like an ARRI SR2 is the BEST option to have for ENG /shoulder mounted rigs. Any thoughts on this? Have you used the zacuto rigs before? Do you still use this particular rig?
Tom, there is a problem with follow focus with most Panasonic lenses. They are manual focus by wire so there is no repeatability for focus distance in manual. Prime cine lenses need to be used.
Awesome explanation, thanks so much. Is there a place you would recommend as far as renting all these pieces? I've been looking at borrowlenses, but they mainly focus on lenses and camera and I can't find these parts on there. Thanks!
very informative as always. Thank you for this. I hope to become a great filmmaker like you Tom. I'm taking one day at a time... so far with my hacked T2i, started doing some entry level music videos with clients. Came across your channel not too long ago and... just wanna say that your videos help so much. Keep it up please!
Quick question Tom: I like how the LCD monitor on the GH4 rotates and spins around, like if you are shooting low to the ground, you can tilt it up and look at it from above. Does the cable clamp on the cage block the LCD from opening, or can the clamp section be removed? Love the rig and the vids. Thanks!
CatsEye Cinema The HDMI cable will limit how much up you can rotate but without the cable you can move it all the way the cage doesn't limit the monitor in anyway
Hey Tom! This is a great video and a great rig, one thing I am wondering is that can I customized the monitor's aspect ratio? I want to shoot anamorphic 2.35:1 and doesn't want to put tape on my monitor, and the only ones that has the anamorphic build in as a preset is the smallHD monitors which are north of $599. Thank you!! Love your channel.
Not sure how big the Yagh is... but the follow focus will work with the lumix lenses. I used it with mine. You have to throw the lens gear ring on the lenses and you can use it.
Thanks for the video Tom! I have a question regarding the follow focus you mentioned in the video. I noticed the gears didn't reach the lens on your GH4 because its not a cine lens. Is there and adapter to make the gears reach or would you suggest purchasing a follow focus that is made to reach GH4's lenses. Thanks
Hi Tom, Thank you for the very informative review. 1 question for you though about the mattebox. In the video your mattebox has a rubber bellows, but on the came site there mattebox dos not have that rubber donut, and it has a carbon fiber finish look while yours dos not. is there a specific model that you have that is not available any longer?
Hi. What is the advantage of using the zoom instead of running your audio directly into the camera? And do sync audio afterwards of do you use the track from the camera? Take care :-)
Hi Tom, does the A7s really fit in this cage? On their website they say, it´s for 5D/7D/GH3 - and this cage is a modified copy of the letus cage I use for my Canons. My A7s doesn´t fit, because it´s smaller than the other cameras and the battery cover is not accessible...
I see someone asked if this rig could hold the YAGH but I am curious if the battery grip would work, it looks like there is enough room. Right now I have the GH4 battery grip plus the Marketech adapter that realigns the tripod plate back under the lens. Together they add 2 inches to the overall height (5.75" w/camera). I imagine there is a solution to elevate the mattebox and follow focus but that is probably in addition too the rig. And from what I can tell in your demo the HDMI cable lock seems to have options to mount higher to account for the grip/adapter so it isn't blocking the grip's battery compartment? Or at least just flipping it so the long side faces up. Does this rig seem like it could be made to work with the battery grip on?
How does this thing work on a tripod? I bought this cage with the CAME-TV Carbon Fiber Tripod (your other video) and the two seem incompatible. Can you make a video explaining the marriage of the two? Because I'm struggling to see how this camera rig can be easily applied to the tripod.
Hi Tom, have you tried using the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster with this rig? The contact on the metabones seems pretty scary because it doesn't rest on the actual cage. any work around to keep it more stable? Also, would it be possible to remove the screw from the metabones and use the actual screw thread on the GH4. The heaviest lens that we may be using is a canon ef 100mm 4/2.8. Thanks
Hi from denmark man! i have a question. what wireless follow focus system would you recommend for the sony a7sII ? and do both screens work when you operate ? you know both the external monitor and the internal monitor on the camera ? ..
Hey Tom I've read that this camera cage blocks access to the battery compartment for the GH4. Is that true? Have you come up with a work around for that? I want this rig but I'm worried that I'd have to disassemble the rig to change batteries.
Put it in a quick release on the bottom and camera will snap out and all you have to do is snap it back in and line up the gear ring to the Follow Focus
Oh ok, I see. I'll find a quick release plate. Good idea. I was having trouble getting the Follow Focus lined up correctly. Seems my Lumix X series lenses are too short for this cage. Perhaps a quick release plate that allows you to slide the camera forward a little? Gets the lens out forward a bit. Thanks for the help. I like the cage but it has some issues with the GH4.
rabbitch mccurry Are you suggesting to insert a quick release plate between the rig and the camera as a way to elevate the GH4 so that the battery door can be opened? Have you tried this and if so then can you recommend a plate please?
Abby Eagle Yeah I just added quick release plate between rig and camera. The plate allows me to slide camera forward a bit and lock it there. This enables proper clearance for battery door and use of kit lenses. B&H sells quick release plates. I also have 4 Rokinon Cine Lenses (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm). I highly recommend these lenses with GH4.
:-) yes I do... not sure if you watched the video but like I said 5 times... just click the first link in the description of this video and that will take you to a page with ALL the info and links on all the equipment I show here and where you can buy it, for how much etc. tomantosfilms.com/4596/ultimatecamerarig/
Hey Tom, would you recommend the GH4 over the canon DSLR mark ii's? I am thinking about getting the GH4 for the 4k output over the 5D or 7D. Is this the camera to get for affordable 4k rigs?
Looks nice but all that stuff adds weight and will make your arms very tired real soon. Did you use a quick release plate for you rig and tripod. One thing I would stay away from any Gini Rigs. You will need a wrench to tighten their screw locking connections because they do not hold and are very weak.
That's in my house... I'm working hard! Well maybe not hard... but I'm still working. Getting ready for my next film, plus finishing VFX on my previous film and editing 3 music videos I shot in August... and in between I post these videos on my youtube channel :-)
I bought the camera rig and some of the accessories. With the standard 12-35mm lens on the GH4 there is not enough space to use the follow focus with the matt box. The barn doors are useful in those cases where you are shooting into the light. Just wondering if anyone has some ideas on what could be an option? Also i have been trying to fit a Glanz LCD VIEWFINDER MARK II MAGNIFIER 3X to the rig. I have ordered a DSLR Coollcd Rod Clamp Rig Clamp RailBlock For 15mm Rod which i hope to modify in some way - that is screw the LCD viewfinder to the RailBlock so that it can slide up to the back of the camera. Just wondering if other people have found a solution?
When you plug that audio cable from your H4N directly into your camera, what is the sound quality? Is it good enough that you don't have to sync separate audio files with video in post or do you still have to do that anyway?
+SLWassets Comes down to budget. I simply can't afford one. In the past I have recorded audio separately using the H4N and synced in post, but I'm interested in knowing what the quality of the feed is like running the line into the camera.
I have recently purchased a Panasonic GH4. I live in NZ so its more expensive than that for me. I have a Sony PMW-200 for video production, I use DSLR for filmmaking and I can't get the look with a video camera. I don't have an issue using portable field recorders, I'm simply interested in what the feed of the audio is like.
Do u use the zoom by itself or do u use them in concert with lapel mics? i am doing videos and events and I want a wireless lapell mic set up. what is the best set up ?
Aweful cage! The cam is not secure in this! Why do you have a cage, when it‘s just material what is existing, but don‘t supports your camera or gear.? You can let the cage away, and it makes n difference 😂
David Gray exactly the other way. Very bad camera rig!! The fishing is ok. And i can tell you this, i‘m a director and producer and love to go fishing :-)
Tom!
I'm sorry but I have to mention this, your name sounds like "tomatoes" Nice video.
Favorite video from Tom Antos!
That is a great tip on using step down rings instead of a bunch of different size filters.
Hey Tom this is very helpful. Any chance you could post an overhead shot of your Pelican case to show us how you cutout the pick and pulls?
I shoot events with my shoulder rig. And what I'm missing on your rig is the counter weight. It gives my setup so much more comfort. And with my just added Zacuto EVF it is very compact. So I can shoot for 12 hours and walking around with the rig without problems. I have posted a picture on the facebook of my rig.
What camera are you using the Zacuto EVF with? Also how is that EVF? You liking the image quality?
Tom Antos I use the Panasonic GH3 as my camera and the Zacuto EVF I love it! The EVF has a really great display and you can set many thing like zebra's focus peaking 2.35:1 lines etc. The greatest thing was I bought the EVF used for 200 euro instead of 800 new :)
victorbart I didn't know the GH3 had 2:32:1 guidelines... how do you enable that? Do you know if you can do the same in the GH4.
Tom Antos
No it is all buildin the Zacuto EVF. So it is really an addon for the GH3. It adds features to the setup.
*****
yes it is annoying using glasses with a GH viewfinder :( the Zacuto evf has eye correction options. So you can use it without glasses.
Great little rig, it looks light. How much do you think it weighs when it's all built up?
The rig itself is around 3 pounds... the camera obviously and the lens you use will add extra weight... so depends what camera / lens you use

Tom Antos true ;)

$898.00 for that whole rig in CAME-TV website. Considering all it comes with, except for those flexible handles and shoulder pad, it's not that bad.
Also check out Ginirigs. They have nice stuff and sometimes great sales on ebay.
victorbart True, they also have solid stuff but lately it seems hard to find their parts... like the shoulder pad I use in this video is from Ginirigs, its great but I can't seem to find it for sale anymore. Do you know if they're company is still operating?
Tom Antos
They don't sell their stuff in shops. The website looks active www.ginirigs.net/ . But the loose parts are so expensive compared to a complete package. Not fun to buy extra stuff.
Im guessing you cant use the extra battery grip with this cage right? Looks like a fun solid rig to shoot on.
Great video Tom, I learned allot! Have you tried this rigg with an a6300?
Nice video. It convinced me to get this rig set up. What are brands and model numbers?
Great job
James
That awkward moment when you're 18 minutes in and realize there is no Sony A7s rig presented.
3:20 The fishing guy... ;0)

Awesome video Tom Antos , I love it :)
Thanks!
@ around 05.12 ~ 05.18 -- "all it takes is just one screw" -- true words Tom, true words! ;) lol :p
You have a dirty mind... I like it! LOL
Love it...great video Thanks
Thanks for this great overview of your rig. Just one question: I guess you never bother using the EVF much with the rig. Is there ever a problem in bight conditions using the rear camera screen?
You got a new sub. Nice video.
Hey Tom, which Pelican case is that? I like the size and the fact that it has wheels
All the model numbers for case and extras I show are here: tomantosfilms.com/4596/ultimatecamerarig/
Tom, there is a problem with follow focus with most Panasonic lenses. They are manual focus by wire so there is no repeatability for focus distance in manual. Prime cine lenses need to be used.
08:40 What does he mean when he says "ENG kind of work"? Thanks.
ENG = Electronic news-gathering
Ah okay, cheers Tom. :)
hello Tom how much did you spend for all of this. except the camera. i like this rig.
Keep it up please!
hey tom this might be a weird question but do u voice over the bear on the cleaveland show? i always was curious
Dang you discovered me! I was hoping to keep my side job as the voice of the "Bear" secret. ;-)
Tom Antos Thanks Tom!!
Only one question sir: is it easy to changes the battery for camera?
Do you have any weights? I would say that this rig is to heavy on your arms. Shouldnt you use a counterweight to get the rig in balance?
I love your set-up Tom. do you know of any cages like this that would fit the GH4/Yagh ?
Also could the Follow focus work with lumix lenses ?
Thanks !
Not sure how big the Yagh is... but the follow focus will work with the lumix lenses. I used it with mine. You have to throw the lens gear ring on the lenses and you can use it.
Ok thanks Tom great channel by the way subd you.
dude thank you so much for going through all this info. I learned a lot.
In the video your mattebox has a rubber bellows, but
on the came site there mattebox dos not have that rubber donut,
and it has a carbon fiber finish look while yours dos not. is there
a specific model that you have that is not available any longer?
How steady is the footage with one of these walking as opposed to something like the Dji Ronin.
MuffinManMedia don't think so. better get a glide cam or gimbal
Hi. What is the advantage of using the zoom instead of running your audio directly into the camera? And do sync audio afterwards of do you use the track from the camera? Take care :-)
Hi Tom,
does the A7s really fit in this cage?
On their website they say, it´s for 5D/7D/GH3 - and this cage is a modified copy of the letus cage I use for my Canons.
My A7s doesn´t fit, because it´s smaller than the other cameras and the battery cover is not accessible...
Do you not find it way too big? I much prefer the cages made for a specific camera.
Rowan Gallagher so true. This cage is the biggest s*it!
I wish 77d had a cage- all the others are too big or too small
I see someone asked if this rig could hold the YAGH but I am curious if the battery grip would work, it looks like there is enough room. Right now I have the GH4 battery grip plus the Marketech adapter that realigns the tripod plate back under the lens. Together they add 2 inches to the overall height (5.75" w/camera). Thanks
can you get this set up in Australia ?
Hi Tom, great rig. How do you cope with no internal ND filters for the GH4? I really want to get it, but just don't know how I'd get around it?
***** Variable ND filters!
Holy manta!
Hello! Has that rig a good workmanship?
Yes. Very pro looking and strong
Thanks man!
Tom, can u suggest me a light rig for the 2nd camera?
Hi from denmark man! i have a question. what wireless follow focus system would you recommend for the sony a7sII ? and do both screens work when you operate ? you know both the external monitor and the internal monitor on the camera ? ..
Tom what about if your lens is big i mean you want to shoot video for sport 70-200mm is that adjustable.
Do you prefer the cage featured in this video, or the CAMTREE cage?
Hey Tom I've read that this camera cage blocks access to the battery compartment for the GH4. Is that true? Have you come up with a work around for that? I want this rig but I'm worried that I'd have to disassemble the rig to change batteries.
Put it in a quick release on the bottom and camera will snap out and all you have to do is snap it back in and line up the gear ring to the Follow Focus

Perhaps a quick release plate that allows you to slide the camera forward a little? Gets the lens out forward a bit. Thanks for the help. I like the cage but it has some issues with the GH4.
The standard lens is too short for the cage.
rabbitch mccurry
Are you suggesting to insert a quick release plate between the rig and the camera as a way to elevate the GH4 so that the battery door can be opened? Have you tried this and if so then can you recommend a plate please?
Abby Eagle Yeah I just added quick release plate between rig and camera. The plate allows me to slide camera forward a bit and lock it there. Do you have links for the specific products you covered in this video. (rig, mat box, puller, handle, etc.)
:-) yes I do... not sure if you watched the video but like I said 5 times... just click the first link in the description of this video and that will take you to a page with ALL the info and links on all the equipment I show here and where you can buy it, for how much etc. tomantosfilms.com/4596/ultimatecamerarig/

***** No problem!
Hey Tom Antos!
Does this rig also work with the YAGH-version of the camera ?? Sorry for my bad english, im german :)
Hi Tom, I bought the rig but can't work out how to insert the nd filters? I've looked online but nothing is coming up.
Cheers
Hey Tom, would you recommend the GH4 over the canon DSLR mark ii's? I am thinking about getting the GH4 for the 4k output over the 5D or 7D. Is this the camera to get for affordable 4k rigs?
Tom, I thought this was a fishing rod review. Next time get out the mans way. :)
Looks nice but all that stuff adds weight and will make your arms very tired real soon. Did you use a quick release plate for you rig and tripod. One thing I would stay away from any Gini Rigs. QUE BELLEZA ME GUSTA TANTO MUY PROFECIONAL
I like your videos and reviews but why most of products u review are very expensive?
Hi! Can I use any DSLR for this rig? Let's say the Canon 80D or the Canon 5D Mk3.
What would the total price for the whole rig be? (rough estimate)
Do u use the zoom by itself or do u use them in concert with lapel mics? i am doing videos and events and I want a wireless lapell mic set up. what is the best set up ?
+ET Whisperer (TRebChanneling) I'd like to know this to.
is the matt box necessary
not just for lens flaresy Also for filters. nd filters, cto, ctb, gradefilters and so on!
what mic do you use please
That beard tho! Nice video :)
Thanks! It took many days to grow.
subscribed!!!!
on average how much does the whole rig cost
$1,000
What kind of Mattbox is that?
It comes with the rig when you buy it
im looking for a rig for my g7
Awesome stuff! But bit expensive. :D
Great video but terrible audio, waay too much low freq. Had to bring the video into premiere og set a pretty insane EQ...
You seriously just imported this almost 20 minute video into premiere just for better sound quality :/ you have way too much time on your hands bud
Nice Rig
UPDATE: With the GH4 you have to remove the camera from the rig to change the battery. Sigh... not so ultimate after all.
Can u get me a shoulder rig
Has anyone ever told you that you kind of remind me of Mexican film maker Guillermo del Toro?
Nope, never. Why?
Tom Antos Idk it seems like you guys could be related haha
Hi Tom,
Also what are your thoughts on the 2 & 4 times digital zoom features?
Oh my god, half of this video is "you know, you know"
i know
Do they offer one for Sony A6500???
that doesn't look like budget rig.... definitely I can't afford it
Aweful cage! The cam is not secure in this! Why do you have a cage, when it‘s just material what is existing, but don‘t supports your camera or gear.? You can let the cage away, and it makes n difference 😂
Good camera rig and bad fishing :)
David Gray exactly the other way. Very bad camera rig!! The fishing is ok. And i can tell you this, i‘m a director and producer and love to go fishing :-)
The moral story of the plug is go to his website
