    NOTES: Over a year ago, when the Panasonic Lumix GH4 arrived, I broke it in by filming and editing the first professionally shot independent short film, in its first week: • Chicago Art & Architec... . Not the newest thing now, the GH4 still is the only meaningful option for capturing 4K video internally without a big rig, costing under a couple grand. But it's always needed a bit of rigging, and while filmmakers keep using it to make amazing films - examples at www.focuspulling.com/blog/gh4 - there's still a lot to talk about, in terms of rigging it up right (and all of this applies to the GH3 too). Following up the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera rigging guide I made last year that went sort of viral - • Rigging the Blackmagic... - here's a similar chat: because sometimes, showing stuff and talking over it works better than writing an article. For a streaming clip, it does run long, but it covers lots of ground - and I'm looking forward to reading your comments below.
    Don't forget, the world's biggest GH4 User Group is spanned across Vimeo, Facebook and Twitter, all connected together at: www.focuspulling.com/blog/gh4. Thanks for continuing to share your work with the community.

    Thanks for your time in producing this excellent video, it has helped me considerably to make a decision for our training videos.
    Now that the GH5 has just been announced at Photokina 2016, confirming GH5 will not be available until approximately the middle of next year, I will now look towards the purchase of 2 x GH4Rs, plus the Atomos Inferno to use as a monitor, plus the option to record externally in 10-bit (4:2:2) and which will also record audio, instead of using the Tascam. Just one less piece of equipment.
    I have just subscribed and will now look at some of your other videos. You time and professionalism is appreciated!

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great point, Graham. And the mock-up of the GH5 even suggests that its body will match that of the GH4, so that accessories and maybe even cages will be upwards-compatible, making investments into the GH4 now even more sensible. You're wise to capture in 10-bit 4:2:2, and hopefully also in V-Log as your Inferno will leverage that for HDR capability (if nothing else, for future-proofing).

    Nice to see GH4 is still popular with so many other camera's around like A7S, C300MKII and so on. I am looking at the GH4 and the G7 at this moment. Decisions, decicions (affordable and limited G7 vs expensive and versatile GH4).

    • @koolkutz7
      @koolkutz7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lutte Kikker I use the Panasonic G6 plus the 12-35mm and 35-100mm f2.8 lenses mentioned in this video which give me superb results. I just use the 'natural' profile peg back the saturation & contrast and it looks good. So the G7 should be great, especially given it can shoot 4K. Obviously you don't get all the video options or weather sealing of the GH4 but that's the trade-off. The G6/G7 has got focus peaking, histogram and mic input so I use a Rode video pro which gives lovely rich sound. I have some video footage from the G6 on my channel if that helps.

    Great video indeed! Very helpful in assisting me in narrowing down the choice for my rig. Been holding back for half a year now. The D|Focus cage looks awesome but can you recommend other top handles instead of the Zacuto QR Tapped Handle? Also, how about a good follow focus for the GH4? Thanks in advance!

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zulkifli Zaid I'm not fond of their practices, but inevitably you'll run into top handles made by SmallRig that connect via Arri rosettes, 15mm rods or NATO rails. As for follow focus, I'm of the view that to whatever extent you actually find it useful, there's not much variation. D|Focus offer a bundle including this D|Cage with version 4 of the FocusPulling tool (!) that they built their name on: dfocussystem.com/dcage-bundle-gh4

    Fantastic video! Very tempted to order the tascam, did you say that you cannot plug it directly into the GH4? or that it is inconvenient. I very much would like an external recorder which has this option as we often have to shoot and edit quickly. cheers and thanks!

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The Tascam DR-70D records internally but also can pass along its audio to the microphone input on the GH4. That's a great way to, e.g., feed phantom power to a mic and use the Tascam as a pre-amp. The one caveat is that for best audio fidelity, it's recommended (but not necessary) to get a special cable with attenuation, as explained here: th-cam.com/video/3dUjmYTB060/w-d-xo.html

    Great video. Lots of great stuff here. I subscribed. Do you ever use a mattbox? If so how would that fit with this configuration?

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Emerick Gerald Thanks, Emerick. I really don't use a mattebox for a few reasons. Mainly, lenses almost always come with hoods that serve the same purpose and can do an even better job at blocking glare, etc., being more closely honed to the lens barrel. People use matteboxes mostly because they think it looks cool (ahem!) but also in case they need to add filters, particularly neutral density, with quick drop-ins, and changing big cine lenses behind the filters without having to re-mount the filter for each lens (and get the right adapters, etc.). Because the Micro Four Thirds lens format is so compact, and even cine lenses in that format are small, it's hard to justify a mattebox! If you want neutral density, just get a variable ND filter as big as your largest lens, and adapt down for smaller lenses. Hope that helps.

      +FocusPulling (.com) That's what I do; I purchased a 10 stop variable ND filter for my biggest MFT lens plus step down rings fo each of my other lenses which works fine to maintain the correct shutter speed etc.

    Dont You find useful the handgrip in case of rigging? For example the one that varavon armor for gh4 is providing? Im thinking about rigging my gh4 but after putting it in cage, wont it be hard to use standard grip?

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kacper Bork Thanks for mentioning that. I'd considered the issue in comparison with the other cages, but found that the extra grip moved the one-hand stabilization point ever farther away from the center of gravity, not a good thing. That, combined with the way that the D|Cage has a big cut-out for the original GH4 grip, makes this the best compromise. In short, it's almost like holding the GH4 without a cage anyway.

    Excellent video. I was about to go with the new Varavon cage, but you've got me thinking this setup might be more suited to me. Two things I'm curious about. I love the look of the leather hand strap on the Varavon, but another comment addressed that. Secondly, and perhaps far more important, can you use the GH-4's built in flash with this cage? While I do a lot of video, I'm also using the Panasonic to enhance my stills skills. One final question, will the anti-twist nodes get in the way of an adapter like the Metabones Speedbooster? Thanks again for the video. I've subscribed because of it!

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Micah Floyd Thanks, Micah. I'm afraid there's no cage solution I've seen that permits the flash to pop up out of the dome, and since this cage uses the top hotshoe to lock in the camera, even an auxiliary flash may not be an option. As for the anti-twist nodes, I'm not sure about the Speedbooster, but I've used other similar adapters and I did not find the anti-twist nubs getting in the way.

    • @micahfloyd1974
      @micahfloyd1974 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FocusPulling (.com) Thanks for the info! I thought the Varavon armor allowed for the camera flash, but maybe not. In any case, removing this cage doesn't seem too difficult. Now for the bad news, I really want that mic and I just saw the price tag :/ Oh well. Thanks again!

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Micah Floyd Much agreed that the mic sticker shock is painful. I do think that quality on-camera stereo capture is a market lacking in competition at the mid- to high-end, so am hoping for more entrants over time.
      Sadly the only cage that gives room for the integrated flash is not ideal: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/969127-REG/swedish_chameleon_scgh3_cage_cage_for_the_panasonic.html/BI/8206/KBID/8862/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x432892

    Thank you for your nice work. May I ask what the difference is between Roxsen Focal Reducer EF to Micro-4/3 and a Metabones Speedboster?

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lexabboy Thanks for asking. You'd want the Metabones for any "active" Canon lens that relies upon an electronic connection to adjust aperture (and optionally focus). You'd be OK on the other hand settling with the Roxsen or other focal reducers if you are only using manual Canon lenses (e.g., the Rokinon Cine lenses mentioned here). Manual lenses have their own mechanical aperture and focus controls that wouldn't even make use of the expensive Metabones features. One small corollary is that the Metabones optical quality is slightly better, but we are shooting video, so the difference is mostly imperceptible.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I'd go for Canon, for lots of reasons. (Technically, as an aside, because of the flange distances being what they are, Nikon lenses are actually the most cross-compatible with everything down the chain -- but it's a less-common lens mount and arguably in decline.) Canon lenses mount natively to most Blackmagic Cinema Cameras, Canon Cinema EOS, and have numerous adapter options for Sony and Panasonic, so it's the most solid investment I think -- this is particularly in the context of this video, though, involving manual cine lenses where electronic aperture control is not relevant.

  • @B4f189

    hi, i know this video is a little old but what UWA lens would you recommend for the GH4?

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Yap With extreme caution, the Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95, since the GH4 is so light-starved and that's a hyperprime aperture. HOWEVER, it only works that wide under ideal conditions, where you're directing attention to the center of the frame, with reasonable lighting and minimal flares, otherwise you get extremely ugly distortion at the edges (e.g., facebook.com/GH4users/posts/910659342314565). For a more reliable image, I also like pairing my Rokinon 16mm T2.0 cine lens with a focal reducer to decrease the crop factor, and that performs better with almost the same short focal length.

    • @alexyap3659
      @alexyap3659 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FocusPulling (.com) just the answer i needed thank you for responding so quickly. one other thing i am wondering about is would you recommend the dji ronin-m? i plan on purchasing one for my rig instead of the conventional cage/shoulder rigs.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Yap Even though that's the smaller sibling to the Ronin, I think it's still overkill for the GH4's size. By far the best on the market right now is the CAME-Single 3-axis single-handle gimbal stabilizer. It has 32-bit brains and encoders, which even there best the Ronin, at a lower price point and much, much more portable. Highly recommended.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DAVID VILLA Unfortunately, no. The YAGH accessory was especially comical upon release, with its extraordinary bloat in ergonomics and added accessory cost, but by now it's just sort of an outdated relic. Unless you need SDI, the camera body outputs 10-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI anyway, and you don't want to be lugging around an external 12-volt battery pack just to provide power to...the YAGH battery pack so that the YAGH can work as a...battery pack!

    Nikon mount is more practical for gh4. Unless you are willing to buy the more expensive smart speed booster vs one with an aperture control ring. Surprised at how many people go for canon lenses on the gh4. Unless that have other canon cameras.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dane Gerwig When it comes to cine lenses which have their own aperture control rings, as mentioned in the video, Canon mount is the best investment because it buys adaptability to every other lens mount standard per the flange distance. Nikon buys you E-mount and Micro Four Thirds, but shuts out Canon (making the lens investment lost from the entire Canon ecosystem including Cinema EOS).

    • @danegerwig3786
      @danegerwig3786 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FocusPulling (.com) agreed. There is tons of value in the canon mount when it comes to true cinema lenses and interchangeability. I'm coming from a dslr set up to gh4 which is why the Nikon makes the most sense to me. Compact for run and gun is what my gh4 is used so I went with Nikon.
      From my experience most people are unaware of losing aperture control with canon l series lenses.
