This explains so much! My cane corsos seem to be more traditional. I've seen cane corsos that are stockier and bulkier, and with that expanded white chest piece and I thought they were just not purebred. I had no clue there was two versions.
I'm against cropping and docking for cosmetic purposes. If someone is breeding puppies that are solely going to working homes and cropping/docking is in the breed standard and has a physical benefit, I'm not particularly against it..but the majority of dogs are pets and not working dogs. (pitbulls especially, the only reason their ears were cropped was for fighting, so literally no reason to do it now). A whole litter shouldn't be cropped or docked "just in case" one puppy goes to a working home. Also with that being said, there's a lot of working breeds that don't get docked or cropped and we don't see issues in high enough numbers that it's a concern.. Veterinarian bodies are banning the procedures because they find them unnecessary and painful procedures. Why would they ban this if it wasn't true? They make lots of money on these procedures so it really has no benefit to them to not do it. There is NO argument for cropping to prevent ear infections, this is false. And, if that were the case, breeds that are more prone with actual large floppy ears would be cropped (hounds, spaniels, poodles, Newfies, labs, etc.) Funnily enough, many breeds that get cropped actually are supposed to have semi pricked ears so technically their ear canal is still "open"..but the ear protects the Canal from foreign debris, water etc which can cause infections. Many of the breeds like bully breeds, Corsos, Dobies, can be prone to allergies and that is more of a cause of ear infections..so you need to address the underlying cause not just chop their body parts off. Chances are anyone saying "my uncropped dog gets ear infections, I wish I would have cropped", that dog would likely still have ear infections if they did crop. (The only way to prove or disprove this would be to take a large # of dogs as adults, prone to recurrent infections, and then crop and see if the infections stop in the majority of the dogs). I've seen plenty of cropped dogs come through the shelters with ear infections (mainly due to allergies). If your dog is prone to happy tail then I'd talk to your dog about docking. It IS a painful procedure even as a puppy. Also ironically, bully breeds are super prone to happy tail and docking isn't a common practice in these breeds 🤷🏼♀️ To people who say "well if it's banned it will still be done, just behind closed doors" - if people do that, they can be charged with animal cruelty (depending on the country you live in, but if they are developing laws banning it, then they need to also implement a cruelty law for causing pain and suffering). Some people like the look of cropped/docked, or just can't get behind changing what theyre used to seeing and use excuses like "working dog, ear infections" etc to justify it. At least just admit you're doing it because you like the look. Rottis have beautiful, thick, large tails (like labs) and not the whippy, hard tails like dobies/bullies..so they wouldn't be prone to happy tail..yet it's still being done just because we are used to the look. Of course cropping will prevent hematomas, and docking will prevent happy tail, but that is like saying removing all their teeth will prevent dental disease, or removing both back legs will prevent cruciate tears, arthritis, and breaks (all a lot more common than happy tail and hematomas) ..it doesn't mean we should do it.
Yes very true the origins of tail docking was from the Romans who believed it would prevent rabies and ear cropping because hunters believed they hear better. Nutters
