Upgraded from an older 18v kit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.
Great review! We'll be picking one of these up to put on the dyno for sure. If you can't track down a 1/2" drive 1-7/8" let us know, we're working with a custom socket maker for our rig to make a 3/8" drive 1-1/2". Edit: Just found what you need. Sunex Model # 260 socket, easy peazy!

I’m to invested in the Milwaukee M18 platform. Their gen 2 mid torque @ 650ft lbs nut busting torque is good enough for me as a diyer. I’ve used Makita throughout my mobile electronics installer career. 30 yr old 12v drill stopped working, replaced the switch on my 30 yr old right angle drill. I now have a Milwaukee m18 brushless hammer drill. Also have a 20+ Dewalt 12v brushed drill that’s still running too.

They only had the hog ring in stock so I got that
I too got the XWT15, which is the name of the XWT14 with pin detent. Now i also got the 40v XGT version with a ring and i have no special preference, both are ok.

Really wish Makita stuff had more sales. Started with dewalt 18v eventually got a 20v max impact and drill because of a really good deal then bought the bare tool circular saw. Last year got a really good deal due to a price glitch on a website and picked up a 7 tool dewalt XR kit with 2 5ah batteries and a free mid range impact. Not saying I've had issues per say with dewalt stuff but for some reason I just like Makita. They seem to be built way better and have better features not to mention they don't look like they were designed for a 5 year old. Wish I could start over with Makita but it would be expensive as hell just to get the 8 tools that I have.

I just order this tool on Amazon for $200 and I’m so excited.
The flexible bottom is more for protecting the electronics during impacting, not necessarily for drops. I have the high torque and love it but it can be bulky so pretty excited for this.
makita does a lot to protect the electronics. not necessarily just because they want long life out of the tool, but because getting you past that 3 yr warranty period without a hiccup maximizes profit/minimizes returns.
I like how Makita puts screws threw the plastic and into the aluminum housing at the front of the tool. Instead of how Milwaukee does it the other way around. Maybe it doesn't make a difference but it just seems to be better on the Makita.
I’d be very interested to many tools break in that area on the Milwaukee impacts. I’m not sure how many tools do that, even when dropped from high heights.
It's a stronger grip so it's definitely better, as to whether it makes a real world difference Idk

I've never see that drop feature on any other tool. features like that are no brainers and much cheaper than machined parts and special handing in the electronics. I hope to see it become a wide spread trend.
It's on their multitool as well. From what I've seen in other places it's moreso intended to protect the battery from excessive vibration.

I have the Milwaukee gen 2 and I’m not impressed. It seems weaker than what the specs claim and then when voltage drops it gets pathetic. My voltage dropped the other day before I realized it and it didn’t even tighten a tie rod and lugnuts completely. Luckily I noticed it and went back and double checked all the bolts. I’ve honestly been more pleased with my rigid octane over the Milwaukee gen 2.
Is this all I need to remove lugs or do I go a little higher for a few bucks more?

There are probably very close torque wise. I don’t think you should be worried. I picked up the m18 mid torque and know their torque numbers are conservative.
I thought this just came out, but Amazon shows it was first available back in Oct 2020.
The reason the base of the tool is loose with the body is to reduce vibration when the tool is impacting--It's not to make it more durable in case it takes a fall. When the tool is impacting, the vibration will be transferred to the base and cause it to vibrate, while vibration in the handle is reduced. It's similar to how bar ends work on motorcycle handle bars to reduce vibration.
Agreed. Also my understanding is that it reduces damaging vibrations to the battery and battery components.

Hi there, great video. Can you advise me please about the correct use of my DTW 1001 - tried to undo some approx m24 fine thread wheel nuts on my 16 ton low loader trailer and some it wouldn't budge. They were rusty and old and who knows when or what was used to torque them up etc before my ownership. Question is , if you come across something it won't undo , how long should you keep the trigger pressed before burning the gun out or damaging the clutch etc????? i did bursts of approx 3 - 5 seconds and still nothing. Then interestingly i gave up and went back a few hours later and did again and it broke loose!! For reference we tried a with 4ft scaffold bar slid onto a 2ft breaker bar on the same nuts on the wheel and took my weight of 100kg and still didn't budge so was amazed when the makita did it but i gave it just probably 7 seconds this time..... I don't want to hurt the tool so would love to know your guys advice . Thanks, James.

The flex at the battery is to reduce unnecessary vibration on the terminals on the battery connection to keep it from wearing out prematurely.

Would be good to have this in 3/8. M18 have a mid torque in that form factor.

Good video, logical demonstration so thanks for that. Clear video, looks great. But. The. Talking. O. M. G. Granted there are people who watch this stuff purely for entertainment but I'd wager the majority of folks here don't need to have the torques of each nut told to them over and over post it up as you hit each one and done. I hate to jump ahead of people's videos but I had to watching yours. No disrespect intended and I'm still giving it a thumbs up.

I think you'll find the flexible base of the unit is to cut down vibrations in the hand it's the Pendulum effect

really torn between this and xwt08z. I went with the latter mainly because i didnt want to get a bolt that I was unable to undo. still waiting on delivery so we will see. Use`s mainly for automotive stuff
Probably a little late to mention it but the XWT08Z is extremely heavy compared to this mid-torque model.

Makita is the "luxury" version of a cordless impact wrench! Lots of Japanese refinements.
I agree, not only are they durable tools but the appearance of them makes makita stand out from the rest
The Makita TD171DZ is one of the few tools still made in Japan. It is hands down the best impact driver in the world.
Although I think these numbers are subject to question , however it does give a baseline across the board. Great video however this tool has 2 many buttons for me.
The buttons immediately makes sense when you start using the tool, the functions are well thought through and covers most scenarios, but living in cold climate i can tell you at once that the buttons themselves are no better than the other brands - too small and too hard to operate with gloves.
im so curious what that tool is you use to torque down the bolts and how many footpounds can you torque it to, it seems effortless when torquing it to high torque without an impact

Yeah...that wobble joint between the handle and battery is not for drop protection (it may be a side benefit, but it's not the main purpose). That wobble joint is there to isolate and protect the battery and brain box from the impact vibration of the tool when it's impacting. I don't know how you got that info wrong...being you're a tool review channel.
If it's just drop protection, why isn't that feature on every brushless hand tool Makita makes? It's cause it's not...

Yes, it's still the same tool. The last letter just designates whether it's a kit, or bare tool, or single battery kit, etc.

I don't believe Makita quotes the torque of the settings, but the included instruction manual says modes 4, 3, 2 and 1 have 2700, 2400, 1700 and 1000 impacts per minute respectively

Spider rims on trucks.. the nut needs to stay on untill the dog is broken loose, the compression ring is under tension between the wheels and you don't want a dog popping with out the nut off because if your heads in front of it the dog will end up through your brain.. hope this helps 🙂

What would be the better choice for car/motor related work. Will the DTW300 (XWT14) be enough or is the XWT17 a better choice?
Mostly work on BMW’s from 2000 era and up.
If you're looking for a single all-in-one gun, then I'd choose the XWT17 (mid-torque). Just because, you're going to encounter stuck fasteners that need the power of the larger impact. If you think there will be room in your budget later, then I'd recommend the 14. The XWT14 will probably do 85% of your work, and it's a smaller tool to carry. Thanks for watching.

Can you compare this to a new Gen 2 Milwaukee 1/2 inch with a high output 8 or 12 battery with the new Bolts you have on your rig now? Be good to test the same way then test them again with newer socket you're going to aquire. I was going to buy the Gen 2 mid Milwaukee now I'm torn LOL. Thanks

@@idoit4urmom I'm still leaning toward the Gen 2 since its more compact than my Gen 1. The Milwaukee looks like a beast tho. I figure the Gen 2 is a smaller more nimble tool around tighter spots. I've been in areas that needed a smidgen more clearance to make it work so now with the Gen 2 I think it be possible in my application especially with the high output batteries. The high output 3.0 and 8.0 bumped up the power in my Gen 1 for sure. Curious if he will test with and without the high output batteries kinda like he did with the m12 stubby and a 6.0 that thing hit over 400. Great match up.
@@johnny4713ify the 2861-20 and the 2962-20 are pretty much the same power running a H.O battery. To be honest the 2861 might even have a little more. The Makita xwt17 will remove fasteners the 2861 and 2962 can't but all 3 are very similar in fastening torque.
@@idoit4urmom I'm holding off until I can get them in my hands at HD. My store kinda sucks with there displays, but in no rush. Dewalt is suppose to come out with a newer mid supposedly that can compare with these two. They're also coming out with there new 12 volt compact with impressive numbers so we will see.
@@johnny4713ify I got the gen2 mid torque because my gen1 was acting up and wouldn't work on damp days. My buddy has the makita xwt17. I saw that dewalt has some new 12v impacts coming soon "if they live up to the claimed specs they will be awesome". The current dewalt high torque and mid torque have fallen way behind compared to Milwaukee and Makita so hopefully they are in the works
So I guess the obvious test would be this vs the 40v offering.

Your losing lots of power with that 1/2”-3/4” adapter, I bet it’s a different tool without it.
In theory this gun should remove tractor trailer lug nuts if they are not seized and over tightened to death with a 1 inch impact.
Honestly, the only thing that’s stopping Makita from stomping Milwaukee is their lack of 21700 cell batteries.
Their quality of their tools are definitely on par with the other big two. But their lack of battery option, and their lack of interchangeability between the new And upcoming 40v and 18v is their biggest weakness.
But Makita does seem to have the slight upper hand in features of their tools themselves.
the 40v isn't coming to usa, it's been nearly 2 years. they're sticking with the x2 36v platform. and I don't blame them, it makes more sense because it does exactly like you said, maintains compadability. as for the 21700 cells.. well.. to each their own.. but those battery packs are honkin huge, I have no interest packing that around on most of my tools. plus milwaukees HO 21700's are over 200 bucks.. I'd be kicking myself if I damaged it or it grew legs when I set it down.
On par? Makita quality is far superior to Milwaukee and Dewalt and I own mostly Milwaukee tools lol

I would HIGHLY put money that XGT is coming to the U.S. Especially since they haven't said otherwise anywhere.
XGT products are available in Canada already too.
I'm betting they are probably ramping up production and/or offers before they hit the U.S. market.
Makita batteries work on almost 300 tools... the battery difference is minimal for same voltage and amp hrs. In the big applications like big rotary hammers, makita 2 batteries smoke Milwaukee. at the end of the day makita quality is better than all
Think what that mid torque would do with 21700 cells wow
power is watts and watts = volts and amps. the size of the cell don't matter, li-ions run a nominal voltage of 3.6 and getting good aH's out of them mean running them at around 20-30amps max. that's what makita does. that's what milwaukee does. the only difference is the available gas in the tank.
21700 run just a little more volts than the 18650
@@shanepipkin4041 folks, just put 21700 nominal voltage into google. it's the same 3.6 as 18650s. 4.2 for the first few seconds of full charge (and that's why dewalt can say 20v), but nominally it's 3.6 and that's due to the chemistry, not the size of the battery. don't become an unpaid marketer, a little self-education can go a long way!

Lug nuts 90ftlbs , what are hobbiest using 750ft lbs on ? ?
I bought this impact for professional automotive use and it's been great. Good luck finding lug nuts tightened to only 90 ft lbs from used tire shops. Usually, the tires are inflated to 50 plus psi and the lug nuts are tightened 25 or 30 ugga duggas.

With more powerful 5 or 4ah battery and without an adapter, it can surely do 15% better. 6ah is pretty weak

All those speed settings are gimmicks you don't need them it's just something else to break
I use impact wrenches to install stuff. The settings are awesome, because you Can under torque the bolts, and finish it with a torque wrench.
It's very useful. And "something else to break" is the most stupid statement cause what will break it uses tech for other stuff too not just that.
I really dont like how makita cheaped out on adding controls to their old tools: an extra wedge between the batt and the handle, juck. It makes it look like there's a battery adapter there.

Milwaukee mid torque broke away 600 ft lbs in about 3 seconds, and that was the 3/8 dr. Check the other milwaukee videos. This doesn't stand a chance. Just got me a mid torque, stubby and screwdriver lol Milwaukee FTMFW!

Well I’ll sell my useless Milwaukee mid torque as soon as this is on the shelves at the store. Gen1 is not any stronger than my compact does the same 210ftlbs. Really disappointed.
I love their products but the Makita naming convention sucks, also living in the UK in their great wisdom they have swapped one poor set of acronyms for another!! I'm flummoxed :/
