Stop Overthinking: Leaves on a Stream ACT Anxiety Skill #30

  • Leaves on a stream is an exercise from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that teaches cognitive defusion, or the ability to separate oneself from one's thoughts.
    Leaves on a stream is a simple guided meditation that teaches an essential skill, how to stop overthinking, by guiding you through the process of noticing and releasing thoughts.

    About Me:
    I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
    In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
    And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

    This makes me think about how I can stay stuck on 1 thought for too long, it causes the other thoughts to get stopped up. But all of them have to flow through. I am able to take the time to let things flow. And to not run from the bad thoughts because the stream of my body is 1 flowing mechanism. That deserves a chance to be filtered out and cleansed. But it takes a process. Just let the process happen. Let the leaf go down the stream at its own pace. I love how when she said that part, it made me feel confident for some strange reason lol.

    • @ara.may.sauvage
      @ara.may.sauvage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      homeschoolmom 1988 i was just realizing that too, about staying stuck. i'm still learning to let things flow, every thought brings up feelings for me and those are still overwhelming (i have been processing a few decades of repressed feelings and forget that feelings are ok to have despite never being allowed to have any when i was growing up) - i hope to one day feel confident like you

      Sometimes, all we need permission to get unstuck from our thoughts and to let it just float away on a leaf. It is very refreshing to release the items that bog us down, one leaf at a time.

    i had to do this twice within 2 hours as i was having one of the most severe cptsd attacks to date, i was having the most difficult time focusing on anything. hearing your voice was soothing tho, thank you for sharing your knowledge, for helping people like me who are practically textbook cptsd - this combined with other videos helped bring me back 🙏🏾

    This is so good, I'm listening to you at the same time as crickets are around me In my backyard while I'm lying right next to my window and it's dark night it is so soothing that it's like when I was a child and my mother would play with my hair . Thank you very much you have transported me to my childhood even if I'm 37years old

    I had to do it twice a day for two weeks before it started working for me. Then I did it twice or once for 2-3 months and then stopped for 10 months. The gap doesn't help at all and I'm in a bad anxious space again, so I'm restarting now. This exercise really helps separate yourself from your thoughts and gain a third person perspective on it. In the beginning, I used to not have faith in it and be bored, but when it started working, I was so happy! All the best, everyone! ❤

    When I do exercises like these I get really emotional…finding something that acknowledges how I am feeling and dealing with them 1v1 instead of ignoring them or closing them out. To finally be understood amongst the confusion of oneself. If there are any gamers out there “Celeste” is a really good one that deals with mental illness and what it means to co-exist with it.
